Global award for UQ woman scientist

The University of Queensland's Professor Mary Garson has become the first

Australian to receive a ‘Distinguished Woman in Chemistry or Chemical

Engineering' award for her eminent leadership and contributions to

chemistry in Australia and overseas.

The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemists (IUPAC) award was

presented at the 47th IUPAC General Assembly in Istanbul, Turkey earlier

this month.

Professor Garson, from UQ's School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences, said it was an honour to be recognised so highly for her contributions to the chemical sciences.

“Women have emerged as leaders in the worldwide science community and these awards celebrate their successes,” she said. “However, women are still underrepresented in the top ranks of science. I am passionate about encouraging other women to make significant contributions to science, and hope that this award will prompt more Australian women scientists to put themselves forward for such awards.” Professor Garson's research explores the chemistry and chemical ecology of bioactive compounds from marine fauna and from medicinal plants, with the aim of understanding chemical communication in the natural world.

Professor Garson also gave two invited lectures at the World Chemistry Congress held in association with the General Assembly, and introduced a lecture given by HRH Princess Chulabhorn of Thailand on bioactive components from Thai medicinal resources. Professor Garson will take over the position of President of the Organic and Biomolecular Division of IUPAC in January 2014 for a two year term. “I am excited about my role in leading the international organic chemistry community to new initiatives and collaborations over the next two years,” she said. “When I was a university student, I looked ahead to a fascinating and rewarding career as a scientist, and so I really hope that Australian students fully explore the wonderful opportunities that lie ahead of them in science-based careers.”

International Union of Pure and Applied Chemists (IUPAC) IUPAC is an international chemistry standards organization and world authority on many global issues involving the chemical sciences. Chemical Engineering award

The awards program was initiated as part of the 2011

International Year of Chemistry celebrations to

acknowledge and promote the work of women

chemists/chemical engineers worldwide. Recipients

are selected based on excellence in basic or applied

research, distinguished accomplishments in teaching

or education, or demonstrated leadership or

All RACI Qld members, partners and interested persons are invited to attend the 2013 Qld Branch President’s Dinner & AGM. Formalities are strictly limited on the night. So bring your partner and come along and enjoy the company of your colleagues and friends.

Date Friday, 1st

November 2013 (6.30 pm for 7:00pm)

RSVP Tuesday 29th

October 2013

Speaker Professor Mary Garson FRACI CChem MA (Cantab) Natural Sciences, PhD (Cantab) Organic Chemistry School of Chemistry & Molecular Bioscience, University of Qld.

Venue The Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC on Grey Street) Arbour Level – A2 Room – Pre Dinner Drinks will be held in A2 Foyer Entrance via Grey Street, Brisbane

Access to Venue 1. Public Car Parking at BCEC – Entrance via Gray Street (opposite ABC Studios) 2. Public Transport - Access via Bus and Train in close proximity

In this presentation - "Lights, Chemistry, Action…." - Mary Garson will explore the need for chemists to better network with those around them (educators, industry, students). Her talk will explore "Engagement".

Professor Mary Garson completed her PhD at the University of Cambridge. She migrated to Australia in 1983 as a Queen Elizabeth II Research Fellow, and has been a Professor of Chemistry at The University of Qld since 2006. Professor Garson has published widely on chemistry and chemical ecology of bioactive metabolites from marine sponges and mollusks. A second area of collaborative research explores the chemistry of South East Asian medicinal plants. An unusual form of professional recognition is the naming of a new flatworm species as Maritigrella marygarsonae. She has completed more than 400 SCUBA dives in her research work. She has been President RACI-Qld, Chair of the International Relations Committee of RACI and a member of the National Committee for Chemistry. She was Executive Secretary of the World Chemistry Congress/IUPAC General Assembly in 2001. From 2002-2005 she chaired the Board of Australian Science Innovations, and led a university-government-industry corporate partnership that organized the 15th International Biology Olympiad. She has been a Titular Member of IUPAC since 2006, and will assume the Presidency of Division III (Organic and Biomolecular) for 2014-2015. She conceived and led the global networking breakfast Women sharing a Chemical Moment in Time as a pre-launch event for the International Year of Chemistry; worldwide, >5000 chemists from >40 countries participated, making this one of the largest (virtual) gatherings of women scientists ever held. Professor Garson has always been a passionate advocate for women in chemistry. She has received the Leighton Medal of RACI (2011) and an IUPAC Distinguished Woman in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering (2013), both awards recognizing her eminent contributions and leadership to the chemistry community, both within Australia and overseas.
