The Queensland Indoor Bowling Association Incorporated would

like to acknowledge the funding support of Sport and Recreation

Queensland.

Welcome to my first offering of the QIBILO as the Queensland

Publicity Officer. This is the 118th issue of the QIBILO and I wish to

thank you for giving me the opportunity to work on your QIBILO for

you. As the new editor I wish to thank Angus for his work and

Marianne for her years doing it – and for putting up with all my

questions that I have had already.

There is only so much I can do with the QIBILO without your support.

Please give me your feedback – good and bad – I want it both,

that is the only way to make this better and the way you want it. I

also need to know what is going on around this great state,

upcoming events and local results, photos, articles, questions and

anything else you would like in here. This is your QIBILO but without

your submissions and ideas there is not much I can put into it

Just to finish, I want to say a big thank you to everybody that has

contributed to this issue. I have been in contact with a number of

people, but I do not have every bodies contact details, so please

come have a chat if you see me at an event, or email me anything

you would like added.

A Big Congratulations!!

On behalf of all of our Queensland Bowling Community, I would like

to pass on a huge congratulations to the great David Blyth who is

once again in the Australian team preparing to head over to New

Zealand for the upcoming test match.

David has been in the team a many number of times. 1991, 1993,

1995, 1997, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2013 and now 2015.

David is skipping the Mixed Pairs and Mixed Fours. I am sure you all

agree that our best wishes and support go to David who will take it

to the Black Jacks on their home turf and bring that Trans-Tasman

Trophy back to Australia!

Again, Congratulations David. We will all be behind you.

Brisbane

Brisbane are back in the swing of things and had our first night back

on the 4th of March.

On our first night back we confirmed no changes to our club with

George Napper President, Shirley Moore Secretary and Jason

Moore our Games Director. We have all our member back from

last year apart from Marianne Jenner and Sandra Wood.

Marianne is still playing and will be back up here for state titles and

has nominated for the Queensland team. Sandra has a very

energetic little man to look after and a hectic work schedule. Both

have been missed on our club nights but we hope we can get them

both back one day.

Brisbane are currently playing their big bowls which will continue

right until the May titles and will then switch to the little bowls.

On behalf of Brisbane, I would like to wish David Blyth the best of

luck heading away with the Australian side to tackle the Kiwis in

Mount Maunganui in New Zealand.

Caloundra

The year of bowling has begun and we had already completed 2

competitions about to start our third.

We have held our selected sixes round robin with two teams playing

after all rounds have been completed. After a play off the winners

were: Bradley Stoker, Len Blyth, Alison Richmond, Eddie Greenlees,

Neil Wain and June Brien. Runners up: Doreen Greenlees, Shirley

Moore, Margaret Greenwood, Brian Jones. Coral Sherman and Jan

Brown.

Our knockout triples were next with the results as follows:

Open Winners David and Carmel Blyth and Joe Udina. Open

Runners up: Aaron Nash, Samantha Nash and Lois Shimmin.

Consolation Winners: Noel Adcock, Barry Thompson and Noel

Ridgley. Consolation Runners up: Doreen and Eddie Greenlees and

Glenda Wilkinson.

We are now about to start our selected 4x2 round robin.

On Sunday 29th March we held our Medley day with 20 teams

coming along for the day’s bowls. We also had a bbq lunch which

everybody found most enjoyable. The only complaint was how

where they going to bowl after such a great meal!

Coming up in June is our Queen’s Birthday weekend. Saturday 6th

Pairs, Sunday 7th Ladies and Gents Singles and Monday 8th Rinks.

$5.00 per person per event nominations. Nominations close

Wednesday 3rd June. Daily Raffles and a Three Day Raffle. We do

hope you can come along for a great weekend of bowls.

Date to remember and write in the diary or on the Calendar is our

Christmas Weekend of Bowls at the end of November. Saturday

28th and Sunday 29th November. A very enjoyable and social

weekend of bowls.

We have been doing a little bit of work around the hall. Giving the

place freshen up and it is looking good. We are all very lucky to

have such a great facility available to us to play bowls.

All of our members would like to wish David Blyth all the best and

good bowling in New Zealand for the upcoming test match. We

know he will do well!

Good bowling to everyone and see you on the mat!

Dalby

Dalby commenced this year with the Annual meeting with Dulcie

Casey being elected President, Ellen Jensen Secretary and Stan

Wenham Treasurer. It was decided to change our association

game nights to the 1st Saturday of the month hoping to attract

more players.

The 5 game day was held in early March in very hot conditions with

14 teams nominating. The winners being Jean Brown’s team from

Toowoomba. Don Smith’s team from Toowoomba being runners

up. Dulcie Casey and Joyce Kellaway have been given life

membership. The next five day game to be held in November.

From our Kiwi Neighbors!

I thought I might add something different to this one. I have asked

Ainslie to write up something to add to the QIBILO. Ainslie looked

after me for many years while I was a junior and even after that as

was finding my feet in the senior Otago team. I don’t think I ever

really thanked Kevin and Ainslie for all they did, but I am sure we

can all understand how much we appreciate the help from the

established bowlers and how them taking you under their wing can

mean so much. It is my privilege to ask Ainslie to write the below

and thank her very much for it.

Indoor Bowls has been an integral part of my life for the past 54 years

which seems a long time but has passed quickly because I have been

fortunate in winning many club titles, champion of champion, and have

played for Otago for 17 years consecutively until my health issues began.

It is 12 years since I've represented Otago and this year I am hoping to

become fully involved in the game again. Why? I think because of the

challenge, playing against young and senior and the friendships which

have been made over the years which are still going strong. Hard to

believe but I was in the winning "Women's Eights" team 2002. I would

strongly recommend this game for all ages even if you are not the

"competitive" player because its great during the winter months and of

course the social side where after a tournament a meal out to discuss the

days play is just so wonderful. My advice to all contemplating playing is

- don't leave it too late! And enjoy every moment of it!

A winning team culture is really important and it stems from the senior

players who have the skill and knowledge to encourage their team

members to play the shots they have directed and this results in the team's

confidence and performance. The Management have a strong influence

and this combination does produce top class bowling and results.

I am in the process of organizing some player profiles. Who would

you like to hear about and what would you like to know?

We Remember

Michael Hughes: 31.03.1929 – 10.09.2014

Mick married Vonnie O’Sullivan in the first wedding celebrated in

the new Catholic Church at Greenmount on May 5, 1959. The

couple had eight children, Joseph, Con, Mary, Therese, Patrick,

Rita, Ann-Maree and Michael.

Growing up surrounded by the workings of successful stud, Vonnie

would put her knowledge of stock breeding to good use over the

years.

Mick and Vonnie moved from Allora and bought a bigger property

at Hopeland. With the help their son Con, they established Mi-Von

Herefod Stud.

Mick, together with Vonnie’s vast practical knowledge turn the

farm into a leading stud, winning several championships at shows

around the country.

Farming was no Mick’s only interest. He was a qualified A-grade

cricket umpire, and with a team-mate from his Allora days, umpired

a match between Queensland Country and the visiting MCC team.

Mick often regaled his mates with a tale of his refereeing an intercity

rugby league match where one of the captains also happened to

be the Australian Captain.

The Captain kept telling Mick the rules as he saw it. At the first break

Mick, in front of the Captain, asked the payers if he should swap

jerseys with him and let him refer. The player’s quickly replied “No

way”.

Mick turned to the Captain and said with authority: “Your players

do not want you as the referee, nor do I. GO back, sonny and just

play or you will be having an early shower!”

The Captain soon backed down.

Mick lodged his sports and was a champion Indoor Bowler,

representing Queensland in the fours and pairs. On one occasion

Vonnie too was a member of the same team.

Mick had many successes in his life but none greater than his family,

of which he was extremely proud.

As he needed more specialized care, Mick moved into Illoura

Village in Chinchilla, where Vonnie visited him twice a day.

He is survived by Vonnia, his wife of 55 years; eight children and 24

grandchildren.

Psychology and Etiquette

Psychology of Bowling

Bowling is a science, the study of a lifetime in which you may

exhaust yourself, but never your subject. It’s a contest, a duel

calling for courage, skill, strategy and self-control. It is a test of

temper, a trial of honour, a revealer of character. A sweeping

away of mental cobwebs, genuine reaction of the tired tissues.

It is a cure for care; an antidote to worry. It includes companion-

ship with friends, opportunities for courtesy, kindliness and

generosity to an opponent. It promotes, not only physical health,

but moral force.

The Etiquette of Bowling

The most expressive definition of Etiquette is “conventional

decorum.” It is those little acts that help make our game such a

wonderful creator of sociability and friendship.

Etiquette is not an explanation of the duties of the various players in

the team; but it is those little extras that vie to the Royal, Ancient

and, Agreeable Pastime, its great charm; that makes the loser feel

he has lost in vain; that lead one to believe these are the Unwritten

Laws of the Game.

There is an Etiquette to be observed towards our opponents; there

is an Etiquette obligatory to and from Markers and Umpires; there is

an Etiquette observable between players and Spectators.

One’s Opponent

It is a nice gesture to comment on a good bowl of your opponent,

and of a player in your team; you will find that he will do the same

to you. It is Etiquette to admit a fluke in good spirit, with a remark

such as, “We all get them, and they are very welcome when they

come.”

Rules

Are there any rules you are unsure of or you feel need explanation?

Are there any rules that confuse you? I am sure you are not the

only one asking the same questions!

Let me know what you would like to know, what clarification you

require, or anything that simply confuses you and in a future issue I

will try to get you the clarification you require.

Some Fun Stuff!

The Game of Bowls

On bowling nights in various halls,

Peculiar sounds come through the walls;

To passersby it must sound strange,

To hear the remarks we bowlers exchange.

Where do you want…? – tickle it here,

To the unseen listener it must sound queer;

You’ve too much weight, but a very nice green,

I like it, I like it, then a feminine scream.

Your’se not up dear – try it again,

This bowling lingo to me is quite plain;

But the listeners can be excused if they giggle,

When the skip says I’d like one straight up the middle.

Don’t touch the kitty. Oh, Oh, you’ve got the Jack,

It shows what happens on the mat;

A voice is heard, they’re making it tough,

Put a bit on and be sure you’re up.

Bad luck you missed but your weight was right,

No, No, you’re right – it’s not too tight;

Follow him up, don’t kill the end,

I like your style – all the way – now bend.

The skipper moves out to show the track,

Now give me one around the back;

Be sure you’re there, don’t touch the head,

These are the phrases so often said.

Please don’t think us quite unkind;

But what must people think of us,

When our lingo arouses no fuss.

They probably think this tale is tall,

But be assured it’s all on the ball.
