QCCP- Top shots from our 2010 WorkshopsQueenstown Centre for Creative Photography

Firstly thank you to all our workshop a!endees for 2010, what a great year of fantastic photography and good company. Mike and myself have been delighted to go through all the images we have on "le from 2010. #ese images are taken from the critique sessions, so they have not had much post production a!ention. We have

only included images that we feel deserve a score of 80+.

Sorry if we haven't included your favourite shot, it’s just our point of view and another way to share your work with our growing QCCP pho-tography family.

Sharing your work should be one of the reasons for why you photograph. #e experience at "rst can be challenging, I know many of you spend hours deciding, what "ve images to bring to the "rst critique sessions that are at the beginning of all our workshops. #e more you share your work and ask for comments the easier it gets. Don’t make it important, make it fun Here’s the link to

What makes a great image? Put simply, it’s an image that catches your eye, it holds your a!ention and gets be!er the longer you look at it. It’s emotive, it has something to say and it’s technically good.

A great image is an image that communicates and what it has to say shows us something new, in a new way. What ever, it’s the personal interpretation of a subject that’s the most rewarding for everyone.

In our workshops and Photo Safaris we are constantly evaluating students images, the reason for this is ‘to learn’. We ask the right questions; at the time of exposure and in the critique sessions.

For instance:

• What are you seeing? We ask you to say it in words? #en we let you know what we are seeing when we look through your view"nder and offer suggestions on how to make what you are seeing more obvious.

• We also ask you how do you feel about the subject? We offer suggestions on how to communicate this feel-ing, at the time of capture in the camera.

#is process may sound daunting at "rst, but once you get into the practice of it, it works.

Some student success stories from 2010Fiona Bignell.

“#e judges at photo club really liked that one too and it got an honours. I also got a cou-ple of trophies at the end of year awards for best novice digital image as well as best digital image overall at the club!!! Very pleased I was!”

Peter Dwyer I have a!ached four "ve shots that have had both National and International acceptances this year. #ey are a mixed bag but then that's my photography. I have booked a venue for my "rst exhibi-tion for May 28/29 2011 at the Chapel, Morningstar, Mornington, Victoria; about 6 km further down the Peninsular.

#e purpose is to celebrate my photography with a party over two days. #e aim is not to make sales but all the pieces on show can be obtained by way of a blind auction. (Put your bid in a sealed envelope and we'll let you know a%er the event.)

Apart from the enjoyment I derive from photography my aim is to leave a legacy of interesting images for posterity. I think it will

show something of my interests, my wit and something of my partial mastery of this art at this particular time.

Sco! Fowler.”I have a!ached a!ached 4 of my favourite images from the year for you to show. #ey have all had various success from overseas salons. As i said it has been the in-spiration from both you & Mike that has helped get me so far, I remember one clinic, Mike said that ge!ing as much information in the Histogram without blowing out is important, the image of the boat was taken at 3.00 pm & I worked to get all the in-formation I could in my Histogram, this image has been my most successful this year. I got 3 images accepted in the B&W magazine this year, not bad I think.

Students who held Exhibitions in 2010Craig Phillips in Wellington and Russ McLean in Arrowtown.

Please let me know of any exhibition your planning for 2011 and I will help promote it.

2011 Photography Workshops with Mike and JackieWe are all set for this years workshops and encourage you all to think about enrolling as soon as you can. Many of our workshops are limited to just eight students to two tutors (Mike and myself ). #is way you know you will receive all the one to one time you need to solve any of your photography issues. We also encourage the group to share with one another; this makes the experience very rewarding and enjoyable. Beginners as well as the more experienced pho-tographers always go home having learnt something valuable. #e critique sessions are so productive. Immediate feedback that is encouraging and guiding.

If you are feeling like your in a bit of a slump, come and join a workshop group and get excited again. Life's too short not to take the opportunities when you can.

We use house as a base for the Autumn Colours workshops, the Portrait workshop and as a starting and "nishing spot for the Kinloch, Winter, West Coast and Fiordland Photography Workshops.

Mike is Asia

On the 16th of January Mike (ew to Kuala Lumpur to chair the Creative Asia Photographic Awards as well as to present at the Creative Asia conference. #e Creative Asia Awards was the "rst of it’s kind anywhere in the world with a panel of "ve judges chaired by Mike appearing before a live audience of over 200 people as well as on line live via you-tube around the world. #e youtube link received over ten thousand hits during the judging which suggests it was a huge success – so thanks to those of you who plugged in to have a look. #e conference was also a huge success with National Geographic shooter Joe McNalley leading the way followed by Mike who was very well received and ac-knowledged as one of the top speakers at the conference – well done Mike. Maybe next year both of us will be invited and some of you will (y to KL to join us.

My favourite shot of the month

Glacier Explorers trip at Mount Cook. #is is a fantastic experience with plenty of time for photography. Most of the shots on their web site were made by Mike and myself.

Best photographed at the start of summer when the glacier starts to carve.
