Expense Management: The Shortest Path To Profitability

The number one difference between the average bike shop and a high-profit shop is not its size, margins, employee productivity, or wages. Its expense management. Visit Call Up online for some tips on how to think about expense management, making a business case for adding expenses, and techniques you can use to pay for added expenses. We also give you a step-by-step guide to getting started in your shop.

Our CuStomers aRe hungry to continue

the ride lOng iNtO the seasoN Of coOler temps

    and Shorter days.

im Nate Choma and I work on the sales team at QBP. Prior to coming to QBP, I worked on the shop side of the industry. I remember the ups and downs the business experienced as the main selling season waned and shop life slowed down. This issue serves as a memorial to what was once known as the off-season. We all remember those times. The weather would start to slide, repairs slowed down, and bike shop staff began to take part in renegade criteriums through the apparel section of the store. Those days are no more, and dare I say it? Good riddance.

The off-season has been replaced. Our customers are hungry to continue riding long into the season of cooler temps and shorter days. How do we feed their needs? By helping them enjoy the ride all the way through to the next season.

For those who simply want to spin in the warmth and safety of their basements while old man winter does his dance outside, make sure you are well stocked in multiple price points of trainers and know the ins and outs of how to properly merchandise them.

For the more ambitious riders, make sure you have cooler-weather gear front of house, and highlight

    your high-visibility reflective gear. Youd

be surprised at who may be considering riding their bike as the temps begin to drop.

Educate them on how to remain safe, warm, and (mostly) comfortable through this season.

So lets all clink our glasses and wave goodbye to the off-season, and welcome the new era. I for one am

    looking forward to it!

    FINALLY SEEING THE LIGHT

  • OctOber 2015 / Best of Fall / 7

Tell us about some of the current technology being used to make cycling lights better.

LEDs have rapidly developed in the last several years, and they continue to push brighter and more energy- efficient lighting systems.

    Has battery technology advanced?

Battery technology has changed significantly since the rise of lithium-ion cells. The same compact batteries used to power our laptops, smartphones, and other consumer electronics are now found in bicycle lights. Lights are now lighter-weight and less bulky while maintaining the same run times, or even increased run times in some cases.

What are some of the biggest challenges for lighting manufacturers?

Staying up to date on the constant advancements in LED and electronics technology can be a challenge!

People often get watts and lumens confused. Can you explain the difference for us?

Watt is the measurement of electrical power being used by a source, such as an LED. Higher wattage means a higher rate of energy being used and does not necessarily correlate to making the light brighter. On the other hand, lumen is the unit of measurement for the amount of light emitted by a source, and the higher the lumen does mean the brighter the light.

Whats the best way to measure a lights brightness?

An integrating sphere can be used to measure quan-titative brightness, but its also the most expensive and least practical method for the average consumer. An easier way is to try different lights side by side, and compare the throw and side spread. See if the lights fit your needs, and try ones with different amounts of power.

What do different flash patterns do?

Flash patterns are meant to be attention grabbers. However, flashing patterns should be used during day-light hours only. During daylight or dusk, ambient light already illuminates the cyclists path, so a steady beam (to see) isnt as necessary. Instead, a flash setting (to be seen) can be a better option. Faster flash settings are more noticeable and geared to be used in higher-traffic situations, while slower flash settings can be used in lower-traffic situations.

Then at night, when there is minimal ambient light, the headlights steady modes should be used to properly illuminate the cyclists path. The high, medium, and low

brightness modes help make sure cyclists have plenty of light to see whats up ahead and to be seen from behind. If the setting is overpowered by the surround-ings, then switching to a brighter mode is important.

Laws regarding lights may vary across jurisdictions, so its important that cyclists always check and abide by local and state regulations.

What are some misconceptions about visibility at night for cyclists?

Probably the notion that cycling at night is much more dangerous than during the day because of the lack of surrounding light. With proper lighting and safety precautions, cyclists can safely see and be seen from

far distances. Proper lighting can be subjective but should include a light or combination of lights to help the cyclist assess and navigate their surroundings safely. This may include the use of a handlebar light to illuminate the way ahead, a helmet light to see farther up or around turns, and a tail light to be visible to the traffic behind. The use of these lights in conjunction with bright reflective clothing and bicycle reflectors is recommended to maximize a cyclists visibility at all times.

    Any predictions for the future?

The modern USB-rechargeable one-piece design, first pioneered by Cygolite, continues to prove popular among cyclists. Following consumer demand, most current lighting systems are USB-rechargeable and will continue to be refined moving forward. We anticipate these lights to get more powerful and longer lasting with newer features that add to the safety and conve-nience of use for the cyclists.

What suggestions do you have for light system care that will help get the longest life out of the batteries, and light units in general?

Most lithium-ion batteries and chargers have built-in smart chips that optimize the lifespan of the battery when used regularly. For long-term storage, its recom-mended to have the battery partially charged and near room temperature.

The implementation of new light and battery technology from multiple industries is making riding bikes better for everyone, both night and day.

Andrew Ibanez from Cygolite took some time to share how.

With proper lighting and safety precautions, cyclists can

    safely see and be seen.

  • WELCOMETOTHE PAIN CAVE

the time Of yeaR when many cease RidiNg in the elemeNtS aNd Retire to their Pain caVeS iS nearly upon US. With that cOmes tRaineR seasoN for yOur shop.

Setting up the perfect pain cave is considered an art form by many. Not only does it give the rider a chance to ensure theyll be comfortable while maximizing their VO2 and determining their functional threshold, but it also gives shops a chance to make some money in an oth-erwise slower part of the year. Trainers are about as seasonal as it gets in the bike industry, and the main selling window is extremely short. By keeping a few things in mind and implementing some simple strategies, however, youll be able to maximize your sales during that short selling season.

apPeaRance iS eveRythingHow a trainer appears on the sales floor goes a long way toward driving a customers purchasing decisions. Properly merchandising your shops trainer area is an effective and easy way to watch your stock dwindle and your sales spike.

Sell Outside the boxCustomers want to see what the trainer actually looks like, not the box that it comes in, especially if they are a first-time buyer. The most effective, and easiest, thing you can do is have one of each model on display, unboxed. By allowing customers to pick it up, look at it, and try it out, theyre able to form a stronger connection to it than if they were just seeing a photo on the packaging. Display the unboxed trainer next to a stack of boxed ones, so they can easily grab one to buy.

Offer teSt ridesDifferent trainers have different ride qualities based on the brand, the type of resistance, and their price point. Since they are a several-hundred-dollar investment, many customers arent interested in buying one without trying it out first. Have a demo model of each trainer you carry for tests with their own bike or a bike off the floor. (Hint: those unboxed models can double as demos.)

Complete the paiN CaveThe trainer section of your shop should include much more than just the trainers themselves. Group together accessories and products that will complement a customers trainer purchase and complete their home pain cave. Everything from the obvious (riser blocks, trainer mats, and trainer tires) to the maybe not so obvious (Bluetooth speakers or headphones, hydration, and chamois cream) could work to elevate their experience while boosting your sale.

get the Word OutAll that great trainer merchandising youve been doing will be a moot point if your customers dont know that youre doing it. Find a way to promote that you have everything they need for their win-ter training. Shout it from the rooftops if you have to. However, you could also try the tactics on the next page.

    Watch It!

One of the things that people struggle with while sitting on a trainer is the dreaded boredom that goes along with pedaling in place for an extended period of time. This can actually be a major deterrent to prospective trainer customers. Be armed and ready to cure their winter training boredom with some recom-mendations of great cycling-related films available to stream on Netflix.

30 for 30: Slaying the BadgerThe only American to win the Tour de France, Greg LeMond reflects back on the 1986 Tour and his rivalry with teammate Bernard Hinault that year.

Clean SpiritAs more doping allegations in the pro peloton came forward, one team stands in defiance and shows its commitment to racing clean.

Rising From AshesFollow Rwandas first national cycling team as they struggle to move past their countrys horrific history and make it to the 2012 Olympics.

Where the Trail EndsA team of mountain bikers go in search of the Earths toughest terrain and find new spots to get rad.

Pantani: The Accidental Death of a CyclistMarco Pantani was one of the few riders to win both the Giro dItalia and the Tour de France in the same year. Arguably one of the best cyclists the world has seen, Pantanis life was full of many personal demons before being tragically cut short.

Road House *Bonus Film*While not in the least bit related to cycling, its still a great motivator. Just try and watch Swayze defend the Double Deuce by inflicting some punishing justice to Brad Wesleys cronies and not feel inspired.

hoSt trainer nightsHosting a trainer night is a fantastic way to let people know that youre their local trainer experts. Its also a pretty simple one: pick a night, set up some trainers, and get the word out on social media. Bonus points if you play a movie while everyone is spinning. Extra bonus points if said movie is cycling-related (see below). Some people who show up might already have their own trainer and thats totally OK. Trainer nights can also be used as an opportunity to educate customers on some of the many accessories available to them as well.

WorK With a fit StUdioIf your area has a fit studio or coaching center, try to partner up with them. See if you can provide trainers for their clients to use. In turn, you become the go-to shop they recommend to custom-ers who are looking to buy a trainer. If your shop doesnt have enough space to host a trainer night, see if you can work together and hold the event at the studio. All of this will provide excellent word-of-mouth promotion for your shop and will help you deplete your stock of trainers before the narrow sales window closes.

acceSsorizeCreating the perfect den of suffering is more than just buying a trainer and setting it up. By outfitting your customers with all the necessary training accessories, you can ensure theyll be comfortable during the indoor season (well, as comfortable as one can be while training at threshold). Successful accessorization goes beyond the merchandising we discussed earlier, though.

aSK QuestionsSometimes asking a simple question will spark the realization of a need in the customers mind. Its been a long summerhow is their stock of hydra-tion mix going into the winter months? Chamois cream? What condition are their bottles in? Many people dont associate these things with a trainer purchase until they get home and realize that they need them. Ask questions and save them the extra trip to your shop. Additionally, make sure that trainer-specific accessories arent an afterthought either. Towels, trainer mats, riser blocks, sweat guards, and trainer tires are all things that should be sold with a new trainer purchase.

buNdle UpOffering accessory bundles or discounts to go along with trainer purchases will make it more enticing for the consumer to leave with more than just a shiny new trainer. Offer a hydration bundle that includes some drink mixes and water bottles. Or how about a riser block, mat, and sweat guard combo? A 20% discount on accessories if they buy them with their new trainer? All of these are great ways to make acces-sorizing their newly-purchased trainer more accessible while also boosting your sales.

By utilizing some or all of these strategies, youll be able to effectively and successfully become the go-to trainer shop for your customers. The important thing to remember is that while a trainer purchase might only happen once every few years, accessory purchases are ongoing, so creating a strong relationship with customers will keep them coming back for all of their future trainer needs.
