s Two guests this morning Ken’s guest was brother Dave, a long time Islander and our second guest, our speaker this morning, Lynda Llewellyn.

Welcome Dave and Lynda!

Service Above Self – Serve And Care For Others! Gerry referenced our Rotary motto and the message Pope Francis shared on his recent visit to Cuba and the US. Pope Francis has, says Gerry, changed the focus of the church to one of serving and caring for others as the Christian way. Gerry went on to say, there are many ways we can be of service beyond Rotary and its OK if your priorities for serving others fall outside of our club initiatives. There’s still a place for Rotarians within their club if their service activities outside predominate.

Ø Expect a Roses email from Allan with delivery instructions.

Ø Ken wants sales wrapped up a.s.a.p. Ø George has designed a Polio Eradication hand

out to accompany the Roses.

Ø Mike reminded Board Members of the meeting tonight, 7 pm at Rotary House

Ø Deb has not had a response from either of the Elementary Schools, none the less she circulated a sign up sheet for any one interested in becoming a Radical Reader.

Ø Still only 2 homes on the list for the Christmas

Home Tour. Susan wants a response by next Tuesday or the event will have to be cancelled.

Ø Story Book Village Prep and clean up prior to October 27th. Date to be announced

Ø Volunteers for the Story Book Village Halloween Event for families was firmed up. The event happens 5:30 – 7 pm October 27th.

It was good to see Jim back looking rested and ready to go. Lots of Happy Dollars for Jim collected today. Welcome Back Jim!

In the late 1980’s Lynda and her young son were seriously burned in a fire in their home. Lynda was more seriously burned and spent several years in treatment to restore her hands, face and body. Several years of physiotherapy followed and helped her to regain the use of her hands. Following her recovery she began speaking to schoolchildren about the dangers associated with fire and identifying the many situations they may encounter that could result in serious burns.

Lynda’s face has not been restored to her pre fire appearance; scar tissue and some deformity are quite apparent. So how does a person deal with a physical appearance that surely attracts attention? Some people, Lynda reports, have shut themselves away, assuming victim status. Lynda’s attitude has been that she is a survivor not a victim and as such has been able to get on with her life. My reaction was, at the beginning of her presentation, that the woman speaking to us was quite disfigured, however within just a few moments there is a transformation. What you see is not the disfigurement, you see a woman who is open and comfortable with herself, that inner person shines through. This is a beautiful woman.

Thirty children will be immunized against Polio, our way of saying:

Thank You Lynda!
