Operators are looking for more cost-effective ways to provide capacity relief while continuing to satisfy users’ increasing bandwidth demands. The world of mobile communications has seen a huge increase in numbers of subscribers (see Figure 1) as well as significant capacity and performance gains, especially in the area of wireless data. Leveraging increased integrated-circuit processing power, and aligned with improvements in antenna technology and data coding schemes, the peak data rates of Code Division Multiple Access2000 (CDMA2000) air links have grown from 14.4 kb/s in 2000 to 14.7 Mb/s in 2010.

Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) operators need to posi-tion Multicarrier EV-DO (Revision B), with its higher forward link (FL) (downlink) and reverse link (RL) (uplink) speeds and resulting improved user experience, to compete with other wireless technologies such as High Speed Packet Access (HSPA+) and Long Term Evolution (LTE).

Multicarrier EV-DO is an enhancement to Alcatel-Lucent EV-DO Rev A data networks. Multicarrier EV-DO allows you to aggregate EV-DO Revision A carriers and offer an enhanced user experience, with peak data rates of up to 14.7 Mb/s. EV-DO Rev A introduced a range of revenue-generating, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)-enabled applications, including Voice over IP (VoIP) and Push-to-Talk (PTT). Aggregating EV-DO Rev A carriers offers better spectral efficiency because one combined carrier supports more data, VoIP and PTT users with higher user/aggregate throughputs and better edge cell performance than the equivalent separate EV-DO Rev A carriers.

Extending the range and efficiency of CDMA networksCDMA wireless operators worldwide are seeking to cost-effectively enhance high-speed data services in their existing EV-DO networks. While some CDMA operators will migrate to LTE, not all operators are ready or have the spectrum to make this move. The Alcatel-Lucent Multicarrier EV-DO helps these operators leverage their current CDMA network investments and improve spectral efficiency while competing against operators offering third-generation (3G) HSPA/HSPA+ and fourth-generation (4G) LTE services.

The Multicarrier EV DO is available as a standalone EV-DO solution to operators of data-only networks who want to add data networks to overlay competitors’ voice networks or operate data-only networks.

The Multicarrier EV-DO offers particular value to operators who want to extend the range and operating efficiencies of existing revenue-generating services, as well as those who want to introduce IMS-enabled blended services.

Alcatel-Lucent Multicarrier EV-DOUsing a range of Alcatel-Lucent Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs) and the unique Alcatel-Lucent 9271 EV-DO Radio network Controller (RnC), the Alcatel-Lucent Multicarrier EV DO has no interaction with the 1X central office switching infrastructure. However, Multicarrier EV-DO radios coexist in the same BTS as 1X and share common components, such as packet data serving nodes (PDSns), backhaul and IP-required elements, including the Domain name System (DnS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and maintenance platforms.

Alcatel-Lucent base stationsIn a CDMA network, the BTS is the transmission and recep-tion station that acts as the access point for the user to the network, handling network traffic from 1X voice components and EV-DO simultaneously. An EV-DO card is installed in a free slot in the BTS alongside the CDMA voice cards. EV-DO shares common resources, such as linear amplifiers, filters, power supplies and antennas with the voice carriers.

Alcatel-Lucent offers a comprehensive range of BTSs to address market needs and deployment constraints which are fully ready to support Multi-Carrier EV-DO:

Alcatel-Lucent 9271 EV-DO rnCThe Alcatel-Lucent 9271 EV-DO RnC has overall control of EV-DO resources in the BTSs, and is also responsible for handoffs in the network. The packet control function (PCF) and PDSn handle and route packet-switched data traffic, equivalent to the mobile switching-center handling of circuit-switched traffic in a CDMA voice network.

new hardware and software upgrades are available to allow for additional processing demands that are required to handle the higher volumes of data that the Alcatel-Lucent Multicarrier EV DO supports.

Alcatel-Lucent Multicarrier EV-DO – Improving peak data rates and providing superior user experienceThe Alcatel-Lucent Multicarrier EV-DO incorporates BTS software changes to improve user peak data rates and throughput, combining two or three EV-DO1 carriers to form one wideband (2.5 MHz or 3.75 MHz) CDMA “super-carrier”. Combining EV-DO carriers offers higher individual peak data rates (9.3 Mb/s to 14.72 Mb/s FL and up to 5.4 Mb/s RL), better performance across the cell footprint — especially at the edges — and more capacity than running two or three EV-DO carriers individually. With improved peak data rates, the end-user experience is actually comparable to the current real-world performance of HSPA, LTE and wireless fidelity/Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiFi/WiMAX).

1 The full EV-DO Rev B standards allow for a 20 MHz Carrier (15 EV-DO Rev A carriers); however initial devices will be limited to two and three carriers.

2 Requires new Multicarrier EV-DO Modem (MC-EVM) in the BTS; 4.9 Mb/s per Rev A carrier is theoretical, actual peak data rates may be less.

Aggregating spectrum and balancing throughputWith the Alcatel-Lucent Multicarrier EV-DO, new channel protocols aggregate spectrum so that two or three EV DO carriers are combined as one wider band CDMA super-carrier. Users with suitably equipped mobile devices can experience two to three times the peak rate that they would have with just one EV-DO carrier under the same conditions. The link is faster, and the experience is more con-sistent across the entire footprint of the cell — closer to an xDSL experience than to traditional EV-DO. Users at the edge of the cell are in the most challenging RF conditions, which typically result in lower throughputs. A two- to three-fold improvement in the peak rate benefits these users significantly.

The aggregate throughputs from all users are also balanced. For example, with two individual Rev A carriers, users are assigned time slots on each carrier, but one carrier may be heavily loaded and the Multicarrier EV-DO, users are assigned to slots on both carriers, thereby utilizing otherwise-unused resources and leading to CAPEX and OPEX gains for operators.

Smooth upgrading with Alcatel-Lucent Multicarrier EV-DO software and Sb-EVM installationUpgrading to the Alcatel-Lucent Multicarrier EV-DO is straightforward. The single-board EV-DO Modem (SB-EVM), installed in all the latest Alcatel-Lucent BTSs for EV-DO Rev A already contains the hardware to support aggregation using the Multicarrier EV-DO software. Later phases will introduce the MC-EVM, which will work with the Multicarrier EV-DO devices to increase the peak data rate from 3.1 Mb/s to 4.9 Mb/s.

Of course, users need the latest EV-DO-capable devices to realize the full benefits of the Alcatel-Lucent Multicarrier EV-DO, but earlier versions of EV-DO mobile devices will continue to work with the Multicarrier EV-DO, though without the latest EV-DO capabilities.

2002 1xEV-DO Revision 0 allowed CDMA2000 voice operators to add high-speed packet data to their networks in increments of 1.25 MHz of free spectrum. 1xEV-DO Rev 0 led the industry with its ability to supply peak data rates of 2.4 Mb/s on the FL and 153 kb/s on the RL. Operators quickly deployed 1xEV DO Rev 0 in hundreds of networks, and subscribers grew in the millions each year.

20061xEV-DO Revision A upgraded data rates on the FL and RL paths to 3.1 Mb/s FL and 1.8 Mb/s RL, improving latency while adding greater capacity per sector/carrier.

2009Multicarrier EV-DO allows operators to combine two or three separate 1.25 MHz EV-DO Rev A carriers into a 2.5 MHz or 3.75 MHz super-carrier, for higher individual peak data rates of up to 9.3 Mb/s on the FL and 5.4 Mb/s on the RL, better performance across the cell footprint, and more capacity than running two or three Rev A carriers individually.

2010MC-EVM hardware allows operators to enhance Multicarrier EV-DO with higher peak data rates (14.7 Mb/s) on the FL.
