1500mm to enable the TRISO-SUPER 12 overlap to be stapled and taped securely.

Step 2: TRISO-SUPER 12 shall be laid horizontally starting from the eave and stapled

every 50mm, taking care to bring it down along the rafter and down the inner side of the

rafter. (This is to ensure that, between the rafters, the minimum air gap of 25mm

between the two products is maintained.)

Step 3: The product shall then be pulled tight between the two rafters and stapled onto

the inside of the next rafter at the same height.

Step 4: Pull the TRISO-SUPER 12 tight across the top of the rafter and secure with

staples. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 across the full width of the roof.

Step 5: Lay BOOST’R HYBRID horizontally from the bottom slope, and staple every

200mm on the rafters. Ensure that a hem is created on the perimeter with the BOOST’R

HYBRID before stapling it every 50mm. A minimum offset of 10cm must be maintained

between the TRISO-SUPER 12 and BOOST’R HYBRID to allow for overlays of each

product.

Step 6: Nail the first row of counter battens (maximum 1.4m in length) on the rafters to

further secure the two products in place.

Step 7: Lay the second strip of TRISO-SUPER 12 horizontally ensuring an overlap of

10cm with the first strip. Staple it every 50mm taking care to bring it down the side of the

rafter as done with the first strip. Cover the overlap between the two strips with a

reflective tape to ensure air tightness of the insulation, or, if using the offset edges self

adhesive version of the product, use the adhesive strip fitted to the TRISO SUPER 12.

Step 8: Lay the second strip of BOOST’R HYBRID horizontally ensuring an overlap of

10cm with the first strip. Staple it every 50mm as done with the first strip. Cover the

overlap with an adhesive tape to ensure the air tightness of the insulation.

Step 9: Nail a second row of 1,5m counter battens along the rafters.

Step 10: Repeat steps 7 to 9, respecting the continuity of insulation including the ridge

Step 11: Install tiling battens and tiles as normal.

10 TEST AND VERIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

10.1 Test Reports & Sampling

BM TRADA has assessed the results of any testing and sampling, and/or calculation that has been carried out in accordance with the scheme rules.

10.2 Initial Type Testing

10.2.1 Mechanical Resistance and Stability

Mechanical Resistance and Stability has not been evaluated as there is no contribution by the products to the structural integrity of the building.

10.2.2 Safety in Case of Fire

10.2.2.1 Reaction to Fire

Both TRISO-SUPER 12 and BOOST’R HYBRID have been classified as Euroclass F with regards to reaction to fire performance as they have not been tested to EN 13501-1.

10.2.2.2 Resistance to Fire

Resistance to fire, if required, shall be determined for the building/building element with associated detailing and finishes as a whole. Typically this will rely on the use of suitable plasterboard, or similar lining material, to protect the product from exposure to fire. No fire retardants are used in the manufacturing process.

10.2.3 Hygiene, Health and Environment

10.2.3.1 Emissions

The emission concentrations of TRISO-SUPER 12 and BOOST’R HYBRID correspond to the French Class A+ emission regulations on the labelling of construction products or coating of wall or floor and paint and varnish on their emissions of volatile pollutants (French decree of April 2011).

10.2.3.2 Risk of Condensation

The risk of condensation occurring within the roof will depend upon the thermal properties and vapour resistance of other materials in the construction and the internal and external conditions.

BM TRADA has undertaken example condensation risk calculations under UK weather conditions, which for the assumptions made, show no significant risk of condensation. Calculations were carried out for:

- Extreme UK weather conditions – northern isles of Scotland (see table below)

- Assuming heated interior and cold exterior

- Both over and under-rafter configurations

- Assuming a reduced vapour resistance factor of 4.5 for TRISO-SUPER 12 over the rafters, where it is perforated by staples. This value is based on testing to EN12572

The table below shows the monthly internal and external conditions used for the above condensation risk assessments.

10.2.6 Energy Economy and Heat Retention

The thermal performance of TS 12 BOOST'R has been dual tested, both determined by in-situ testing according to BIP-001 test protocol and in accordance with BS EN 16012 (EN ISO 8990).

10.2.6.1 Thermal performance assessed by in-situ testing

The TS12 BOOST’R thermal Insulation was tested at the ACTIS SA research and development site in France and at the BM TRADA site in the United Kingdom. The purpose of the testing was to compare the relative energy consumption of the TS12 BOOST’R insulation with mineral wool in full scale roof test rigs and real internal/external conditions, following the building methods representative of good practice in the UK.

Following testing to collect 3 months of data in accordance with BIP 001 and assessment undertaken at both France and the United Kingdom, the following conclusions were made:

The construction of the test chalets, the instruments used for measuring and recording physical values, the trial methodology and rigour of the testing and calibration procedures on both sites were suitable for comparative testing of the product and mineral wool.

Mathematical models were used to make the results of tests independent of the ambient weather conditions during the testing period. Data from both the French and UK sites was used to calibrate the models for the specific test conditions. As part of the model validation, the models were shown to be able to reliably predict the power consumption of each chalet under different weather conditions from which each model was calibrated.

The models were used to predict the power consumption of test chalets under weather conditions from a number of sites around the UK, using winter weather data originating from the UK Met Office. These sites were selected to be representative of the UK as a whole. The large amount of data used ensured that any local variations in weather conditions are averaged out and the final result is independent of local weather conditions, and as such is representative of the UK as a whole.

An assessment was conducted, based on the results of the modelling, to assess the relative performance of a roof fitted with the insulation system and one fitted with mineral wool.

When the power consumption figures of the test chalets are compared, under a range of typical UK winter weather conditions, the energy consumption of a timber framed roof structure similar to that tested and insulated with the TS12 BOOST’R thermal insulation is equivalent to that of a similar roof structure insulated with 245mm of Mineral Wool installed between timber studs/rafters (*).

The reference mineral wool used conforms to the product standard EN 13162 and has a declared thermal conductivity λD = 0.04W/m.K. Based on a hotplate test according to EN 12667, 245mm of Mineral Wool with a lambda value of 0.04W/m.K has a declared R-value of 6.125 m2K/W (*).

TS12 BOOST’R may be used in conjunction with other materials to achieve more demanding thermal performance requirements. It is important that an air gap is maintained on both sides of the product(s) in accordance with the installation instructions. See manufacturer’s literature for guidance.

TRISO-SUPER 12 was also tested for Air Permeability in accordance with Test Method EN 12114 – “Thermal performance of buildings. Air permeability of Building Components and Building Elements. Laboratory Test Methods”. The product achieved an Air Permeability of 0 m3/Pa.m2.s at pressures of up to 200 Pa. However this does not relate to the air tightness performance of the structure as a whole.

* The thermal performance equivalence is between the two tested roof structures, and includes all the associated heat losses, such as the thermal properties of the materials, air leakage and thermal bridging, the structures being designed with a realistic and identical level of air tightness (n50 = 5 ± 0.5 ach-1, which equates approximately to I4 = 0.4 – 0.5 m3/m2.h) and fractional timber surface area to ensure that the results of the test are representative of commonly used roof structures.

10.2.6.2 Thermal performance assessed in accordance with EN 16012

In addition to in-situ testing, and although thermal resistance is outside the scope of BS EN 13859-1/2 and BS EN 13984, test data has been provided to BM TRADA. The thermal performance of TS12 BOOST’R has been tested in a guarded hot box (EN ISO 8990), in accordance with EN 16012:2012 and the results are given in the table below:

Characteristic Units Value

TRISO SUPER 12 Emissivity (outer/inner side) - 0.05/0.05

BOOST’R HYBRID Emissivity (outer/inner side) - 0.31/0.05

TRISO SUPER 12 BOOST’R R value (1) m2K/W 6.21

(1) In accordance with EN 16012:2012

The above table shows the emissivity of both sides of TRISO-SUPER 12 and BOOST’R HYBRID and the thermal resistance with air gaps of TS12 BOOST’R. The R value is for TS12 BOOST’R, including a 30mm air gap between the two layers and 30mm air gaps either side.

Thermal resistance has been undertaken by the Laboratory of Building Physics Institute of Architecture and Construction, Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) and emissivity has been undertaken by Forschungsinstitut für Wärmeschutz e.V. München (FIW). Both laboratories are accredited to test to EN 16012 and EN ISO 8990.

10.2.7 Aspects of Durability

Long term durability of TRISO-SUPER 12 and BOOST’R HYBRID products can be demonstrated by examination of this insulation product and similar reflective insulation products produced by ACTIS S.A in existing installations in roofs in France. The assessment was carried out by BM TRADA and included visual inspection of the insulation product and the associated timber roof structural members and ancillary components. The installations assessed were part of the building for approximately 18 years.

All products assessed were confirmed to be fabricated of similar components to TRISO-SUPER 12 and BOOST’R HYBRID. All insulation products and associated components were found to be in good condition after up to 18 years in service in roof spaces.

Additionally, the effect of artificial ageing on the emissivity of both TRISO-SUPER 12 and BOOST’R HYBRID has been assessed by the accelerated ageing method specified in EN 16012. This involves exposing the products to 70°C and 90% relative humidity for a period of 28 days prior to measuring the performance in terms of surface emissivity.

Based on this evidence, BM TRADA considers that the TS12 BOOST’R insulation should remain in good condition for the design life of a building, where it is installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and the provisions of this certificate..

10.3 Performance Verification

An ongoing performance program based on in-situ and laboratory testing of Thermal Performance has been agreed with the client to confirm maintenance of stated product performance.

11 IDENTIFICATION AND USE OF THE BM TRADA AND Q-MARK LOGOS

Correct identification of approved Building Insulation products is vital in order that purchasers and controlling authorities clearly understand the status of products presented to them. It is therefore a requirement that all products or at least the packaging of the products, covered under the Scheme are identified as “BM TRADA Q-Mark Assessed” or other similar wording, and/or display the Q-Mark badges. This will assist subsequent inspection authorities to recognise acceptable products. For similar reasons, Members are encouraged to make use of the Marks on marketing and technical documentation.

12 GUARANTEES

The Scheme makes no requirement on its Members to give a minimum guarantee. This is entirely up to the discretion of the Member.
