Q-1111 Quilt with Kimono Motifs

Size: 60¾ x 60¾" (152,5 x 152,5 cm)

Top of Quilt:

Kimonos and rectangles in the sashing:

A: Assorted small amounts of many different colorful cottons. This quilt used the total collection Quilters

Basic Special 4518, each 42" (110 cm) wide. If the entire collection is not at hand, substitute fabrics as you

wish.

Background squares, squares in the sashing and binding:

B: 4516-908 black marbled 42" (110 cm) wide 2½ yds (220 cm)

Backing and hanging sleeve:

C: 12-999 black 59" (150 cm) wide 2¼" (205 cm)

Batting: medium weight 59" (150 cm) wide 2 yds (175 cm)

In addition: matching sewing and quilting threads

9 Kimono applications:

Piecing foundations can be found following the instructions. Enlarge 200 %. Check for accuracy using the inch

(cm) gauge. If necessary, correct with a copy machine, Add ¼" (0,75 cm) seam allowance to each section

before sewing. The numbers in the parenthesis indicate the exact colors used from the Quilters Basic Special

4518.

Making the top:

Referring to diagram, sew rectangles and squares together into rows 1 to 7, then the rows under each other.

Making the Kimono applications:

To make the Kimonos 1 – 9 construct each paper foundation section, trim around the outside of outer seam

allowance and carefully remove paper/stickvlies. Join the sections.

To make the collars. Fold each rectangle lengthwise in half, right sides together. From the open edges on each

side sew inwards along a 45° angle. Trim excess to ¼" (0,75 cm) seam allowance.

In the seam allowance at the underarm, clip in a 45° angle. Turn under the seam allowances of the kimo nos,

circles for Kimono 8 and squares for Kimono 9.

Referring to photo, pin Kimonos onto the 1B squares. Slip a matching collar under the top of each Kimono.

Appliqué by hand, using as blind stitch and matching threads. Likewise appliqué the circles onto Kimono 8 and

the squares set on the diagonal onto Kimono 9.

Finishing:

For the backing square 63 x 63" (160 x 160 cm) first sew the 2C strips together on a short side, then join to a

long side of 1C. For the batting 63 x 63" (160 x 160 cm) fit the 2 long strips together smoothly on a short side

and join with large cross stitches. Likewise, add to a long side of the rectangle.

Baste quilt �. Quilt Kimono patches in the ditch. Outline quilt the Kimonos. Meander quilt around the Kimonos

and into the sashing �. Bind the quilt �. Add hanging sleeve �.
