Weekly Transmission 23 III Thursday 9 June 2016 .

«A cult of personality developed in the Soviet Union around both Stalin and Lenin. Manypersonality cults in history have been frequently measured and compared to his... He acceptedgrandiloquent titles (e.g., "Coryphaeus of Science," "Father of Nations," "Brilliant Genius ofHumanity," "Great Architect of Communism," "Gardener of Human Happiness," and others),and helped rewrite Soviet history to provide himself a more significant role in the revolutionof 1917... Although statues of Stalin depict him at a height and build approximating the verytall Tsar Alexander III, sources suggest he was approximately 5 ft 4 in (163 cm).

Trotsky criticized the cult of personality built around Stalin. It reached new levels during WorldWar II, with Stalin's name included in the new Soviet national anthem. Stalin became thefocus of literature, poetry, music, paintings and film that exhibited fawning devotion. Thedegree to which Stalin himself relished the cult surrounding him is debatable. The Finnishcommunist Arvo Tuominen records a sarcastic toast proposed by Stalin at a New Year's Partyin 1935 in which he said — "Comrades! I want to propose a toast to our Patriarch, life andsun, liberator of nations, architect of socialism [he rattled off all the appellations applied tohim in those days] – Josef Vissarionovich Stalin, and I hope this is the first and last speechmade to that genius this evening." SOVIET PASTE-UP ARTIST, Stalin with six-years old daughter Svetlana, Moscow, 1932 or1933. Vintage silver print, 190x285 mm, stamp and printing indications, verso.

Like most children of high-ranking Soviet officials, Svetlana was raised by a nanny and onlyoccasionally saw her parents. Her mother, Nadezhda Alliluyeva, died on 9 November 1932.The death of Stalin’s wife was an important soviet issue and officially ruled as peritonitisresulting from a burst appendix. While there were various other theories as to the cause ofher death (murder on the orders of Stalin, or that she was killed by Stalin himself), it appearsnow Nadezhda Alliluyeva committed suicide and modern historians have choosen this suicideas a date of the beginnng of Red Terror, Stalin starting a long suite of death and murders withSvetlana uncles. 200 euros
