Share Life!

Jesus said "The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly". John 10:10

Dear Friends in Christ,

At the very start of November the Holy Christian Church turns her attention to death. The calendar of the Church year identifies November 1st as All Saints' Day and November 2nd as the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed. At Peace with Christ we transfer and combine those days on the first Sunday of November. On those days the Church gives thanks to God for the faithful witness of saints throughout the ages including our sainted loved ones that have died in the faith.

Death is a preaching of God's Law. When we stand before a casket or, with teary eyes, remember the death of a loved one we are reminded of the words from God in Romans, "… through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned" (Romans 5:12). Death is an enemy of the child of God. Death stands as a reminder of the failure of our parents Adam and Eve to withstand the temptation of Satan -- an inability that we all inherit.

Jesus said that the thief (Satan) comes to steal, kill and destroy. Jesus came to reverse that course in our lives. He came to give us life by dying in our place and rising to destroy the grip of death. St. Paul wrote, "for as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man's righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life… so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 5:19,21).

Jesus came to give us life and that life in abundance. Because of the life- giving gift of faith we have confidence in the

face of death. We know that Christ defeated death for us at His resurrection and has joined us to Himself in Holy Baptism (Rom. 6). We are, in Christ, one with those who now stand before the throne of God and the Lamb Jesus. What a wonderful promise to cling to in times of despair and mourning!

Our fantastic privilege as children of God is to share the life of Jesus with those who do not know Him. There is no other reason for our being as a congregation than to receive that life of Jesus and share it with our community. We have all the tools necessary for the task in His Word. As we remember those beloved saints who have preceded us in death please recall their witness of unshakeable faith in Christ and boldly share that same faith with someone you know. Share Life!

And another thing….On Sunday, November 6, a portion of our Bible class hour will be spent discussing arrangements at the time of death (funeral planning). A funeral planning form will be distributed to you on November 6 that can be filled out and returned to the church office. My desire is to have everyone write down exactly what they would like people to hear and sing for the day of their funeral. In this way, we can continue to “share Life” even in the midst of death!

As each week passes, I am continually reminder of God’s goodness and care for us. Even thought things may not be perfect in the world or our lives, we can find blessings in daily living.

each day and God is at work in our congregation! I am grateful for this each and every day. Even if I am not ready for the coming Advent season, our Lord is ready for us to come to him with all our prayers and praise!

This is the month and season of Thanksgiving – let us all see if we can find a new blessing to be thankful for each day of this month and every day of our lives!

Dear Congregation, I would like to thank you all for this amazing experience I

have had at Higher Things. This being my first year, I had no idea what to expect. That said, I doubt I could have expected such an amazing experience as this. There is something unexplainably special about hearing hundreds of people burst into song or spending the whole day with your friends learning God’s Word. One of my favorite classes was an “Essentials to Bible Study” class. I never thought of how nobody had to be explained about who the Messiah was. My honorable mention class has to be Rev. Wolfmueller’s “Roadmap to your Conscience” class. I have enjoyed so much all the conversations I’ve had and moments I’ve shared with my friends that I am already itching for the next time

Dear PWC Congregation, Thank you for funding our trip here to CSU. I really

appreciate this chance to do something like this, here with the rest of the youth. Even though I personally stayed less than the rest of the students here, this experience has been one of the best church events I’ve been to thus far. My personal favorite class was one where we deciphered the Gospel from Carrie Underwood songs. It was nice to both talk about the Gospel and hear songs from one of my favorite musical artists in the same class. I also really enjoyed walking around the beautiful CSU campus. It was surprisingly peaceful at night, and it was nice to just walk around, enjoying life. Basically, I have had a great time. Thank you, PWC Congregation. Christian Peterson

NOVEMBER!  Each day in our classroom, we look at the calendar, count days and sing the days of the week. The kids learn to recognize the capital letter that the month begins with and together we spell out the name of the month. I usually say something like….”wow, this month is going by fast…..or, sheesh! this month is almost over already!” But lately, the kids are beating me to it. THEY are the ones who frequently say these things. HaHa……...So, friends I guess we all feel the beat of time ticking by.

November is the month we talk about our “needs” and our “wants”. Sometimes I know the “wants” list is much longer than the “needs” list. This is the “old Adam” speaking loud and clear. It’s so awesome to know that JESUS is really the only thing we NEED. Also in the PS classroom this month, we will be talking TURKEY, PILGRIMS, HIBERNATION and THANKING GOD. There will be NO SCHOOL Nov. 23-25 for the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Preschool will NOT be participating in the Season’s Opener this year. Instead, PS will host the Soup Supper and take part in the final Advent service on Dec. 21. Please keep your Preschool in your prayers as we begin our practices.

I want to again THANK PWC for giving me the opportunity to partake in the Rocky Mountain Dist. Pastor and Educators Conference in October. It is appreciated.

The Music of Luther

Luther’s musical education began at a young age. In the

summer of 1484, Luther and his family moved to Mansfeld, a town close to the Harz Mountains in Germany. Luther’s elementary education likely began around the time he turned seven and focused on only four things: reading, writing, Latin, and singing. Music played a natural role in the students’ training as there were taught Catholic liturgy and all served as choir boys often assisting in Sunday service. In addition, students were taught the rudiments of music theory and possibly the basics of counterpoint. Then in

1498, Luther was sent to Eisenach where he would finish his schooling before entering Erfurt in 1501. At Eisenach, Luther joined the school choir Kurrende, rounded out his Latin studies, and developed a love for poetry and music. From Mansfeld, to Eisenach, to Erfurt and the Augustinian cloister, Luther’s experience with music formed an important part of the background and context from which his view of music in the life of church operated.

For Luther as a theologian, music was a practical art, tied to theology and its goal of the praise of the Creator and the proclamation of the Word. Luther’s concept was truly reformative in that it shifted the emphasis from music as a science to music as a performed art. As a musician himself, Luther advocated that pastors and teachers be thoroughly trained in music, that children be educated in music, and that church music receive adequate financial support. Luther played the flute, the lute and sang with, what he described as, a “small, stupid tenor voice”. His ventures into musical composition revolved around the relationship of hymnody and polyphony.

Though an avid musician, Luther’s course into the world of composition relied largely on his relationship with other composers at the time such as Johann Walter, Geog Rhau (the first and greatest music publisher of the Reformation), and Louis Senf. Arguably, Luther was more of a poet than a composer and was set on engaging the participation of poets and others who were skilled in the writing of congregational hymns. He would frequently write original hymn texts, or revise old ones, and set these to existing congregational hymns. It was not uncommon for him to write the text of a hymn, and then write to Walter, Rhau, or Senf asking for an arrangement of an existing hymn tune or a totally new composition. It is generally acknowledged that at last three hymn tunes are from Luther’s own hand: Wir glauben all an einen Gott, Ein feste Burg, and Isaiah dem Propheten das geschah.

Our hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, contains over fifteen hymns that were either composed or written by Luther.

Thanks to Luther, the Lutheran tradition places strong emphasis on congregational singing. But he was careful to continually clarify that music, in liturgy and worship, should function as “living voice of the Gospel”.

Treasurer’s report indicated that while giving over all is down slightly for the year, income is still ahead of expenses for the year. It is anticipated that the year-end figures will balance.

The final steps are being taken to launch the new Website. Additional information will be provided to members.

Council accepted the recommended revisions to the PWC Employee Manual.

Claude France and the Budget Committee presented the recommended 2017 Budget to Council. After discussion and a vote to amend two items in the Budget, the Council approved the proposed Budget to be presented to the Congregation for discussion and approval. Council will be submitting a list of questions to the Preschool Board to help clarify a number of areas.

Budget documents will be available after both services on 10/23/16. Members can also email Marcy Petago and she will send the documents electronically.

Stewardship Sunday is set for November 13, 2016. The November Council meeting has been changed to

November 14, 2016 at 7:00 pm to avoid meeting during Thanksgiving week.

Thank You!My nine month journey with cancer is now at a successful

end. The aggressive, fast-growing cancer has been wiped out by the power of God and the power of prayer. During our life there are many blessings from God. Sometimes when the storm clouds are the darkest we need to look a little harder for them, but they are always there. Through this journey I have experienced many, many blessings from God. “Generosity Thoughts”? These short notes are part of our Stewardship effort. These thoughts will appear weekly throughout the year. These notes are to help explain what stewardship is all about; Stewardship is based on faith in the Lord and dependence upon him. Our giving to the Lord’s work in the Church, including our time and talents, is a sign that we recognize our role as a servant, and our need for that work in our Church that blesses us with His word and Sacraments.

Stewardship Sunday will be November 13th; that is when we will receive your time and talent survey and pledges. The time and talent survey will give you an opportunity to indicate to the Church Council and other church leaders what you would like to do as a servant to GOD. The pledges will be your monetary pledge to GOD. Your sealed pledge will be placed in a special container and remain on the Altar throughout the year. When you receive your yearend financial statement, the pledge will be returned to you. Your pledge is a pledge between you your GOD.Our giving is always motivated by faith, not by our budget needs. Waldo J. Werning in his book, Supply-Side Stewardship reminds us:Budgets are spending guides, not collection guides. Therefore, the educational program in Christian giving should precede setting the budget or informing the people what the budget may be. The people actually set the budget by their commitment in planned, first-fruit, proportionate giving.

The business world would have you look at how much you expect to “make” in a determined period and then set your budget accordingly. In the church we are expected to do God’s work and to set our budget accordingly, understanding that God will give the wherewithal to do the work what He would have us to do. Notice the difference in these two worlds. The business world is dependent on people and what people can accomplish. The church is dependent on God and what God working through the church can accomplish. And here we are reminded that we are the church.

We set our budget, but that does not mean we have to settle for “just making our budget.” Our Lord is a great God, He is an almighty God who can do amazing things. He can work through us so that our giving surpasses our budget so much that we can do even more and greater things than we can think or image. Always remembering that we do what we do so that we may grow in our spiritual life, so that His kingdom may be extended in our neighborhood, in our community, and beyond, and so that praise and glory may be given to His Holy Name.

Old PWC church bulletins & information wantedYears ago, the church had 3 boxes in the office containing

copies of Sunday service & other special bulletins from our inception in 1972 through 1999. A long time ago the boxes disappeared & the contents likely tossed as I can’t find them at church. If anyone knows what happened to those, please let me know.

I’m seeking the congregation’s help collecting any church bulletins or miscellaneous church information (like Broadcasts, etc.) for this project. For now, I’ll be storing this information in my basement due to limited storage space at church. If you have anything to contribute you can give me information at church.

I’m also working on a church history Word document for our new website. If anyone has church history information to share with me for this project that’d be welcome too.
