PVS 1000/1100 Profile XP Media Platform

Grass Valley™ products offer the most comprehensive, multi-format solutions for acquisition, production, storage, and playback—and a strong foundation for centralized, proactive status and activity monitoring. A key component of these solutions is the Emmy® award-winning Profile® line of storage systems, which is the cornerstone of broadcasters’ transition to digital.

Most Flexible Digital Video Platform Available

The Profile XP Media Platform stores more high-quality broadcast content and has more systems installed than any other. That’s because it’s the most flexible platform available. This modular platform offers unlimited expansion capabilities—from a few channels in a single platform to dozens of channels and terabytes of RAID storage using the Grass Valley Open Storage Area Network (SAN) system.

The all-digital architecture of the Profile XP Media Platform includes systems for standard-definition playout and production—systems that are easily upgradeable to support high-definition (HD) production. These systems include the PVS 1000 and PVS 1100, which support a broad range of standard-definition video formats, including MPEG, DVCPRO, and D10.

Like the rest of the Profile XP Media Platform family, the highly networked PVS 1000 and PVS 1100 systems enable IP communications over Ethernet or Fibre Channel connections for faster-than-real-time transfers with no generation loss. They also support the SMPTE 360M general exchange format and Media eXchange Format (MXF) for moving video and audio clips between compliant video storage devices. The format transfers video, audio, and compositional/descriptive metadata and enables play-while-transferring operation.

The Profile XP Media Platform is the industry’s most popular and flexible, with more broadcast content stored on it than any other. It includes the PVS 1000, which features MPEG II 4:2:2 @ Main Level long GOP compression for superior on-air performance; and the PVS 1100, whose MPEG and DVCPRO support, high-quality slo-motion technology, bi-directional codecs, and SDTI transfers make it perfect for deadline-driven news, sports, and in-house entertainment production.

To minimize ownership costs and maximize uptime, the Profile XP Media Platform family, including the PVS 1000 and PVS 1100 systems, features an easy-to-service design and hot-swappable components. Its internal encoders and decoders keep rack space utilization to a minimum. And it supports the Grass Valley NetCentral software, an SNMP-based remote monitoring application that can proactively alert you to changes in system status and component health.

To ensure the highest possible workflow efficiency, the Profile XP Media Platform supports all major automation systems and is supported by application developers around the world. To ensure the widest range of control options, the platform supports Profile native, VDCP, Odetics, and BVW protocols.

PVS 1000 – Optimized For On-Air Performance

A mainstay in control rooms worldwide, the PVS 1000 Profile XP Media Platform is optimized for on-air performance in a variety of applications, including commercial insertion, CART machine replacement/cache, ingest/playback, store/forward, and time delay.

The PVS 1000 system’s dual-decoder design offers the storage efficiencies of long-GOP compression while maintaining your ability to cut on any frame and play back-to-back clips seamlessly. Using MPEG-2 4:2:2 @ Main Level compression, the PVS 1000 streamlines workflows and offers a highly efficient storage scheme, with files that are two to three times smaller than JPEG or DV formats. The format’s broad 4:2:2 chroma is great for multi-generational and high-definition upconversion applications. And with a selectable bandwidth from 4 to 50 Mb/s, you can tailor a signal’s size for efficient transponder or bandwidth utilization.

PVS 1100 – Optimized For Production

With its high-quality slo-motion technology, bi-directional codecs, and broad format capabilities—including support for MPEG, DVCPRO, and D10 as well as Serial Digital Transport Interface (SDTI) transfers—the PVS 1100 Profile XP Media Platform is perfect for news, sports, and in-house entertainment production.

The PVS 1100 is the only product to effectively provide slo-motion playback in a multiformat, multipurpose platform. From instant replay and fit-to-fill to other off-speed applications, its line-interpolation technology removes vertical and temporal jitter to provide crisp, clear, flicker-free playback.

Because the need for inputs and outputs in a production environment can change quickly—sometimes on an application-by-application basis—the bi-directional codecs of the PVS 1100 let you make rapid channel configuration changes. For example, a newsroom can reallocate a channel dedicated to daytime editing for control room playback during the evening.

Designed for day-in, day-out production, the PVS 1100 platform can ingest MPEG-2 4:2:2 I-frame, DVCPRO25, and DVCPRO50 materials at multiple bit rates, and provides specialized D10 support for compatibility with Sony IMX digital VTRs.

The PVS 1100 also lets you move DVCPRO and MPEG compressed data to and from digital VTRs with its support of SDTI technology. Using SDTI transfers, for example, a newsroom can take video shot on a DVCPRO or MPEG digital camera, move it into a digital nonlinear editor (e.g., the Grass Valley NewsEdit™ system), then play a story to air—without ever going back to baseband. The PVS 1100 system supports SDTI-DV transfers, which provide fast, high-quality transfers between the platform and a digital VTR without re-encoding or losing a generation of quality.
