A toddler’s brain is just like clay it can be molded easily at such a tender age. If it is
developed in the right direction then it can really help a child grow positively.
For the purpose of constructive development of a child’s brain, puzzles can perform a
vital role. It is found by a research that a child’s brain development is highly influenced
when a child himself manipulates the world around him and uses his intellectual to deal
with the environment.
A puzzle indeed teaches a child to interact with the physical objects present around him
and thus enhance many abilities of the child like:
– Problem solving ability
– Hand – eye coordination
– Shape recognizing ability:
– Fine motor tactics
– Memory
PROBLEM SOLVING ABILITY The art of easily solving a problem is quite essential and
pivotal.
In one’s daily life situations one has to encounter a lot of
problems, no matter big or small, but if one has good
problem solving tactics then he can easily sneak out of
that problem.
A puzzle increases a child’s problem solving ability many
folds. It gives a sense of understanding to the child that
whether the puzzle is getting solved or not, when he tries
to fit together different pieces of the puzzle.
There can only be two outcomes, either the pieces will fit
together or not, this helps a child to understand the
solution logically.
HAND – EYE
COORDINATION
Eyes see the object and provide
an input to the brain and brain in
turn analyze it and sends a signal
to hands in order to perform the
required task. When a child takes
away, flips or fits a piece of the
puzzle then he learns how to
coordinate between these two
essential organs. This ability to
coordinate smoothly and swiftly
between hand and eye is quite
important.
SHAPE RECOGNIZING ABILITY
Learning to recognize different shapes is an integral
part of a child’s development. It teaches him how to
distinguish between various objects. Puzzles are
indeed a very efficient way to help a toddler get
familiarize with different shapes and sizes of objects,
since it is necessary to recognize an object’s shape
before assembling it.

FINE
MOTOR
TACTICS
Fine motor skills are
those particular
movements required to
move or join different
pieces of puzzle. Such
movements help a little
kid easily learn the art
of handwriting.
MEMORY Last but not the least; a
puzzle is very useful in
improving a child’s
memory drastically.
In order to solve the
puzzle a child has to
recall the color, shape,
and size of various jigsaw
pieces.
This gives a boost to the memory
power of the child.
SOME
PRECAUTIONS
FOR
GUARDIANS
While puzzles are a simple method
to develop child’s mental intellect,
but care must be taken that he or
she are not pressurized to
complete the task. Let them
perform it on their own with their
own strategy. You could set up
small goals first and when the child
become expert in it then you could
encourage him to move further
towards larger goals.
