AutumnLiving close to the nature creates its rhythm in the flow of days. The glow of summer is followed by the cold light of autumn. Does a pinch of the restless-ness of migratory birds pass on to us? We begin new things and begin preparing for winter. In the forests and islands of Puumala, you can pick your bucket full of wilderness treats. Silence follows a canoeist in the waters of Katosselkä, broken only by the longing cries of the swans. By the fireplace of a cabin, a visitor has the time to just sit down and enjoy the warmth.

Welcome to the autumn in Puumala.

The Finnish lake waters are clean, and no fishing licences are required for fishing with a rod and line and ice-fishing.

You can freely go about, swim, boat and walk on lake-ice in the countryside.

The rock paintings in Puumala take their viewers 5,000 years back to the prehistoric times of Saimaa.

WinterThe great Saimaa slowly gives in to winter. eventu-ally, it freezes over, and snow covers the forests and islands with tranquillity. The winter atmosphere is at its best in the peaceful warmth of a sauna or in fun and snowy activities. Cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing are suitable for the whole family. In early win-ter, nippy below-zero temperatures sometimes form smooth and strong ice for ice skating. The blue of winter is real and offers moments that are worth listening to.

The Saimaa-region is rich in pure organic local foods. Bread and fish are the trademarks of the cuisine of eastern Finland. The vendace is popular during the week as well as on Sundays. Many Savonian treats are dishes that are simmered slowly in an oven. Puumala in particular is known for its tattaririeska, a type of flatbread made of buckwheat.

Saimaa is the largest lake in Finland. It has always been a vital waterway for people and goods in Finnish Lakeland. Even today, logs are transported across Saimaa as they were during the preced-ing centuries. The endangered and protected Saimaa ringed seal lives only in Lake Saimaa.
