In this session
We will cover what you need to know about the Hardware Management Console, the Flexible Service Processor, and IBM i. What they are, how we connect them together, the relationships amongst one another, and how we perform upgrades to each. In addition, you will learn basic maneuverability around the HMC as we discuss all these tasks.

Hardware Management Console (HMC)
• Intel based PC “appliance” running LINUX for managing of partitions on Power5, Power6, Power7, and Power8 hardware
• Functions:• Management of Partitions
• HMC Licensed Internal Code Maintenance
• HMC Users and Configuration
• Service Applications
• Local Info Center

HMC
• Easy to Manage
• Can Be Used as Console
• Remote Console Access
• Remote Access of HMC
• Partitions Can Run Without Connection to HMC
• Provides Direct Link to ASMI (Advanced Systems Management Interface)

HMC HMC
• xxxx-CRx – Rack mounted
• 7042-CR9 – Latest Rack Mounted
• xxxx-C0x – Desk Top (end of Life)
• Mirrored disks available
• HMC’s earlier than 7310-C04 will not load HMC
7.7 and later.
• Power8 needs 8.8.1 or higher
• Can’t load 8.8.1 on a CR4 or lower
• 8.8.6 Last to support classic view

Flexible Service Processor (FSP)
• The service processor runs on its own power boundary and continually monitors hardware attributes and the environmental conditions within the server.
• The FSP is responsible for loading the PHYP code from Flash into system memory and starting the system processors. FSP does not deal directly with OS/400 SLIC nor IBM® AIX®/Linux® Open Firmware/RTAS. FSP directly communicates only with the Real Control Panel, PHYP, or the HMC.
• The Flexible Service Processor (FSP) firmware provides diagnostics, initialization, configuration, run-time error detection, and correction.

Advanced Systems Management Interface (ASMI)
• Service Processors Menus
• Connect via https and your Browser through HMC 1 and HMC 2 ports on i5 using addresses:
• Power5: 192.168.2.147 and 192.168.3.147
• Power6, 7, & 8: 169.254.2.147 and 169.254.3.147
• Perform general and administrator-level service tasks such as reading service processor error logs, reading vital product data, setting up the service processor, and controlling the system power.

Partitions - LIC and i5/OS
• This has not changed. Still Licensed Internal Code 5722-999, 5761-999, 5770-999.
• IBM I (i5/OS) is 5722-SS1, 5761-SS1, or 5770-SS1.
• Same for AIX.
• Loaded on EACH partition.
• Not shared between partitions.
• LIC is NOT Server firmware on the FSP.

New Release or Version
• Done as an “IPL” of the HMC using Bootable DVD
• Always do SAVE Upgrade Data Before.
• Always backup to External Media: CD or USB Flash-Drive
• To 8.8.6:
getupgfiles -h public.dhe.ibm.com -u anonymous --passwdanonymous -d /software/server/hmc/network/v8860
chhmc -c altdiskboot -s enable --mode upgrade
hmcshutdown -r -t now

Releases – Server Firmware
• Server Firmware: PPNNSSS_FFF_DDD:• PP = package identifier; 01 = managed system and 02 = power subsystem.
• NN = machine type model group; SF = system firmware P5, BP = bulk power, Ex = Power6 (x=L, M, or H), Ax = Power7
• SSS = fixpack code stream indicator
• FFF = fixpack number for current fixpack level
• DDD = fixpack number for the last disruptive fixpack level
• Power5 : 01_SF240_338_201
• Power6: EM310_057_048
• Power7: AL730_043
• Power8: SV840_056

FSP: PTFs vs. Version
• Change License Internal Code for the current release: Like putting on a PTF
• Upgrade License Internal Code to a new release: Like a new version. i.e., 01_SF235 to 01_SF240
itechsol.com
47
FSP: No HMC
• Firmware Service Update Policy MUST be set to OS Managed.
• Updates received from MH PTFs on 5722-999 (V5R4M0). If V5R4M5, V6R1, or V7R1 then 5733-90x where x is 5 for Power5 or 6 for Power6, 7 is for Power7, and 8 for Power8.
• To display the level: • Run the STRSST command.
• Select Option 1, Start a service tool.
• Select Option 4, Display/Alter/Dump.
• Select Option 1, Display/Alter storage.
• Select Option 2, Licensed Internal Code (LIC) data.
• Select Option 14, Advanced analysis.
• Select FLASHLEVELS, Press the Enter key.

7 Key Points to Take Home
• Configure HMC before powering on i5
• ETH0 on HMC configured as a private network with DHCP.
• Remote Access to your HMC via HTTPS://ip-address
• Update of software order is important• HMC, FSP, LIC, and i5/OS
• Use System Planning Tool to design your machine
• Remember a Disruptive update to the FSP will immediately end all partitions if they are still active
• Backup your HMC to EXTERNAL media before an upgrade
