Synthetic Bone Example

• Research Questions for Client submitting a medical device application to the FDA• Demonstrate a uniform distribution

deposition of calcium carbonate on synthetic bone substrate

• Quantify the interconnectivity of the pores in the synthetic bone

• Utilized energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) to map Calcium

• Used Image Analysis to sharpen and quantify results

• Interconnected porosity is critical so that bone and soft tissue can grow into the pore space of the synthetic bone

• Utilized SEM to image pores on flat cross sections

• IPS developed Interconnectivity Index which was utilized in application to FDA


Surface Roughness

• An IPS client had a lab perform Atomic Force Microscopy on several surfaces to support a patent – they only had 1 week to quantify this (to meet provisional patent deadline)

• Solution – Image Analysis performed on pictures

• Converted image to gray scale picture with darker colors indicating relative height.

• IPS developed a Perimeter-per-unit-edge-length index that quantified the roughness – used in patent filing
