Thank goodness! Do you get together, like so many of us do, with a group of knitters for knitting and a whole lot of gabbing? I think it is one of the best parts about being a knitter. I am fortunate enough to be a part of groups that meet at a local yarn store and in two homes. These knitters have taught me so much about knitting and life. They are so much fun. (You should have been at the pajama party at Knit Wits.) It is so great to be able to get help with that pesky little dropped stitch and get information about what to expect when you get you first colonoscopy, all in the same room. These gatherings have inspired me to do and try things I never would have tried if we were not all doing it together. Last year, it was with one of these groups that I finally broke through my fear of lace knitting. Thank you everyone for deeply enriching my life. Why not get together with a group of your friends and drive up to Maryland Sheep and Wool the weekend of May 7-8? It is a free event for fiber artists of every variety. If you have never been, you’ve got to go. I have never spoken to anyone who went that did not have a GREAT time. Try it; you’ll like it. Or go again. Don’t let a little obstacle like “no bus” stop you from having a super-duper good time. Gather your friends, or your family, or your co-workers and go have some fun. I will have all kinds of exciting news to share with all of you at our meeting on Monday, May 2, at 7 p.m. in the penthouse at Westminster Canterbury. See you then. President’s Message Dearest Knitting Friends, I am finally getting settled from my move. Thank goodness! C H A R I T Y K N I T T I N G N E W S   By Debbie Henderson At the April meeting I announced support for the Pregnancy Crisis Center in Virginia Beach to keep donated knitted items more local. I did this based on information I received from a friend. However, based upon further investigation, I think we need to support Newborns in Need. The Pregnancy Crisis Center is a Christian-based, private organization with very specific beliefs on pregnancy. No matter what my or other Guild members’ positions are on abortion, I did not want it to appear as if the Guild is taking a position by supporting this organization. I went to the Newborns in Need (NIN) national website, www.newbornsinneed.org, and the Debbie Macomber charity program Knit1, Bless2 supports them. For more information about Debbie Macomber’s program go to www.debbiemacomber.com (or see article below). There is a definite knitting connection between the two organizations, and the NIN and the Debbie Macomber sites offer knitting patterns. I will work with the local chapter to determine where knitted donations will go. I apologize for being all over the map regarding charity support. I am still trying to get an idea of the community needs and what Guild members will support. Presently, our support goes to Hats for the Homeless, Caps for Kids, baby hats for preemies, slippers and other items for St. Mary’s Home for Disabled Children, and pet blankets for local animal organizations. Some members also donate knitted items directly to other organizations. Please contact me at [email protected] with your charity count or any questions or comments.

Debbie Macomber Launches Second Annual Mother’s Day Initiative Popular knitting author Debbie Macomber is encouraging her readers to participate in her second annual Knit1, Bless2 Mother's Day initiative to benefit three national charities that provide handmade garments and blankets to infants and children in need. Macomber is asking readers to send in one hand-knitted or crocheted item that can be donated to Newborns in Need, Project Linus or The Binky Patrol. The goal for 2011 is a 25 percent increase over the 2010 donation of more than 2,000 items. "Mother's Day is a very special time for me,” Macomber said in a news release. "This year, I thought about the babies born into this world who may not have all of the advantages that my own children and I enjoyed.  I wanted to find a way to help, and knitting for charity has always been one of my passions.” Readers can go online at www.knit1bless2.com or www.debbiemacomber.com to register and join the effort. Once they've chosen their project from the list of recommended items for each charity and signed up, they will find links to each charity to download patterns. Completed projects can be sent to Debbie Macomber, P.O. Box 1458, Port Orchard, WA 98366. Items can be submitted until May 31.

W e W a n t t o T e l l Y o u r S t o r i e s Guild meetings are fun and informative, but there isn’t always time for personal chatting. To help members get to know each other better, as knitters/crocheters and as people,we’d like to start featuring interviews with members in the newsletter. If you’d like to volunteer to be interviewed for an upcoming issue, or if you have suggestions for knitters to interview, please contact Sonja Barisic at [email protected].

A L i t t l e o f T h i s a n d T h a tBy Karen Richardson The book “Knitting Tips and Trade Secrets Expanded,” published by Taunton, contains a variety of ideas for knitters and crocheters, from how to knit in more than one color to how to assemble garments. Here are a couple of the ideas from the book:

KNITTING TWO PIECES AT ONCE: To prevent two balls of yarn from tangling while she knits both front pieces of a cardigan at the same time, Anne Ingraham of Eureka, Calif., puts each ball in a soup bowl on the floor.

TEACHING BEGINNING KNITTERS: When Ellen Shaffer of Minneapolis teaches beginners to knit, she gives them needles of the same size that are different colors. It can be easier to tell a beginner how to move her blue needle in relation to her red one rather than make her think about right and left as she’s learning new skills.
