Pure Catskills Wood Products is a directory for producers, suppliers, architects, designers and other buyers to connect with wood products businesses and related industry resources in the Catskill Mountain Region. By sourcing producers through this directory, buyers are promoting a working landscape of well-managed forests and a thriving forest-based economy that protects the largest surface water supply system in the United States – the New York City Watershed.

Forests cover 75% of the Catskill Region and provide a natural filter for streams and reservoirs that supply 1.3 billion gallons of fresh drinking water to over 90% of New York City homes every day. Catskill forests are dominated by a rich diversity of hardwoods including sugar maple, red maple, black cherry, white ash, yellow birch and red oak. Softwoods such as white pine, Eastern hemlock and Eastern red cedar also grow in several areas throughout the region.

Presently, 85% of the region’s forestland is in private ownership. Therefore, landowners are encouraged to steward their land in ways that protect the watershed. Compared to regions of similar size, family-forest owners in the Catskills are following the guidance of a long-term forest stewardship plan at a rate over five times the national average. New York City-owned lands and state-managed forests independently certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) also contribute to the overall wood resource. Currently, over 250,000 acres of forestland in the Catskills are managed for superior water quality, wildlife habitat, outdoor recreation and wood products.

This marketing campaign has evolved from a 10-year partnership between WAC and regional wood businesses. Together, they support sustainable forest management and job retention to ensure healthy rural economies and watershed protection. The campaign seeks to meet a growing market demand for local and sustainable forest products by capitalizing on the Catskill Region’s history, culture and the working forests that protect the New York City water supply.

Catskill WoodNet membership is free and available to all wood-products businesses in Delaware, Greene, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan and Ulster counties. Watershed-approved Foresters, Certi�ed Loggers, wood-products manufacturers, artisans, sawmills, crafts galleries and locally-owned forestry equipment dealers are all eligible to apply for Catskill WoodNet membership. Registrations are reviewed on a rolling basis and may be completed online or downloaded at www.catskillwoodnet.org.
