Minnesota's Coaching Staff
Left to right : Lynch, Dr. Spears , Bergman, MacKinnon, Finger, HarrisTHERE isn't much question who isthe coach of the Minnesota footballfield, so it won' t be mentioned here,even as a secret. Dr. Spears gives at t ention to the backs and ends just as, much as to the line. He evolves mostof hi s own plays and describes themto the team at chalk talks. He alsore-describes them on the field of play,vigorously and "'Straightforwardly. Doccan outpunt most members of the squadand he isn't a bit horrified to see theentire team charging his way., Nowand then he may have to ti p the squadover if it becomes too agile, but he
gets along with them fairly well, all in 'all. Eddie Lynch, who has taken hisplace on end in the picture belongsthere. He knows ' plenty about endplay and was an A l l - A m e r i c ~ n , like th edoctor, in hi s day. So was " Dutch"Bergman, Dr. Spears' full time firstassistant. George MacKinnon, whomal l remember as the 1927 center ishelping with the squad, and ShermanFinger is coach of th e "B " Team. SigHarris, who dates away back of '04and 'OS in Minnesota football, has'been a valued member of the coachingstaff for years.

Minnesota Field House
IN SELECTING the University of Minnesota Field House as the cover il-lustration, The Goal Post is not sufferin g under the delusion that footballgames take place indoors rather thanout. Knowledge that football isplayed in The Stadium is hereby admitted. The Goal Post believes, however, that Minnesota fans should knowmore about the big structure that standsjust across University avenue from thefootball field and serves as the homefor indoor winter sports, especially basketball and track.When last fall's football schedulebegan the Field House was a vast steels k e l e ~ that rose above the northstands. Completed in midwinter, it isnow about to round out the first fullyear of it s existence.
In extent the Field House is probably the biggest building in the stateof Minnesota, though it s shell-likearchitecture and single floor hold itfar below more elaborate buildings incost. It is 446 feet long by 236 feetwide, and a t the peak of the roof rises107 feet from the ground. The eavesare 52 feet above ground. It has afloor area of 142,081 square feet, approximately twice the area of the spaceunderneath Memorial Stadium .
Begun with the purpose of makingthe seating capacity 18,500 seats, theField House, as it stands, has permanent seats for 9500, .and enough temporary seats that can be put in placeto bring the total to 14,000.
How the Ticket Office WorksTHE ticket system for football t h i s . and from that time on they are knownyear is the same as in prior years " b y number only, and when seats areexcept for a few minor changes designed to prevent errors and to eliminate scalping and petty favoritism .Holders of priority season books lastyear may obtain the same seats thisyear providing their orders are receiveda t once after the opening of mailorders.One person cannot hold more thansix season tickets. F or the Chicagogame each person is limited to fourtickets. All orders are given a number on the day ' they arrive in the office
assigned the orders are filled in numerical rotation. The assignment clerksdo not know the name of the p'ersongetting the tickets. All they see is thenumber of the order and the lowestnumber gets the best remaining seat.Where purchaser specifies that hewishes to si t low, . or high, his requestis honored unless to honor it would beto force him to take a poorer yard-line.All tickets will be maile,d one weekprior to the game by registered mail.

Creighto n line. O ne of t h e most accurate passers in mid-wes tern footballcircles, Dunn is alsQ an efficient defensive man. H e is trained down belowhis weight o t last season, and whencrouches over the bal l this afternoon,he will tip the scales at 185 pounds.
Another homegrown product is BigBill Lynch. Lynct... is the championhard luck merchant on Creighton campus. Injuries have hOndicapped himthe last two seasons. But with all thetough breaks out of his system, Omahafans are looking to Lynch to lead theat tack of the Bluejay forward wall.
Floyd Rombaugh is the chief threatof the Omaha team in the backfield.
A tr iple-threater is Halfback J immyBertoglio, w ho m ay at any m om entk ic k, pass or tear around end thisafternoon.
The oth er h alfback post is a tossup between ' F ran ci s ( "Mickey" )Magu ire, a n d Merle H u nt. Both are intheir second season of competit ion,and both are l ikely to see considerableaction th is afternoon. Maguire is anIowan, and Hunt is from O 'N eill, Nebr.
The pilot of the Bluejays is JohnScott , of Cherokee, Iowa . Sco tt is anable kicker and an elusive ball-carrier,but the backfield strength of the Bluejays is such ' that he will probably content himself with calling signals thisafternoon. In his first season with theCreightonians last year, Scott p ushedright into the front rank of Bluejaystars.

Only A Guard
Capt. George GibsonThe halfback. he's a hero for the touchdowns thathe scores;, Round his head there glows a halo with a 14-carat shine;He's the boy who slants of f tackle while the crowdstands up an d roars;
He's the lad who gains the yardage through thetorn an d shattered line.The halfback, he's a hero with a laurel crown towear;
He's the wizard of the broken field with suddenwhirls an d darts;When the spiral toss goes shooting through thepleasant Autumn air,

Season's Gridiron MenuNo GAME on Minnesota's scheduleof six hard-fought Coriferencebattles seems likely to produce morereal football thim the one that will be
Coach Spearsplayed with Purdue in Memorial Stadium a week from today.
The days when Indiana and Purduewere the set-ups of the Big Ten are
almost as far back in history as werethose when Notre Dame was habituallyon the small end of a 50 to 0 score.Under James Phalen, Purdue football teams have improved in material,technique and fight. Last season Purdue beat Harvard, and then took thingsrather easily in the matter of subduingthe same Indiana team which fourweeks earlier had held Minnesota to atie at 14 to 14 . Harmeson, "Pest"Welch 'and Caraway are a Purdue backfield combination that holds dangerevery moment, and Captain Olson atcenter is one of the outstanding linemen of the conference.
In meeting Chicago the followingSaturday, October 20, Minnesota renews one of it s oldest athletic rivalries ,one that has been interrupted since1 91 7. "The Minnesota-Chicago game"has a ring to it that stirs the blood ofevery veteran follower of Gopher football and is sure to fix the interest ofthousands who have read of the good .old days and will want to see themcome to life once more. Reports fromthe Midway indicate that Chicago willplay a dashing type of football thisyear. "The Old Man," A . A. Stagg,has shifted to what was once known as"the modern game." He plays wideopen football of a swift, deceptive kindand any Chicago team is going to bewell worth watching. .
Down at Bloomington , Ind ., PatPage sought revenge last year for aseries of beatings he received fromMinnesota while he was coach at Butler. Although he did not quite comethrough with the desired victory, theti e to which his men held Minnesotadeprived Dr. Spears of an even stand :ing with Illinois fo r the Conferencechampionship. Page has instituted asystem of prizes, which are awardedto players doing best punting, best defensive play, best passing, and so on.Many of these prizes went to athleteswho performed with especial brillianceagainst Minnesota, and there IS a sus-

Season's Gridiron Menu(Continued from Pase 12)
plclOn I n some minds that it is performance against the Gophers whichthe Indiana mentor especially desires.
Now Dr. Spears is not so dumb himself. There is a likelihood that somewhere in his heart rankles the wish forrevenge on account of that 1927 tie.With two ties against Indiana teamslast year, one the University and theother Notre Dame, it may almost besaid that the Doc was never so sickof a state in his life, and there is morethan a chance that he will crave ahealing victory on Memorial Stadiumabout November 10th. He's not atall confident, however, that he will .beable to put one through.A horde of fleet and bulky Redmenfrom Haskell Institute, down at Lawrence, on the plains of Kansas, will goon the warpath in time to reach Memorial Stadium the afternoon of November 17th. This is something that

can not be laughed off. Most fansremember the tremendous John Levi,and how he caught a kickoff one autumn afternoon and galloped untouched through the entire Minnesotateam to register a touchdown. Fewplayers of his caliber have ever appeared in Minneapolis, but the worstof it was that -he had a ~ h ~ l e team ofbattling, skilled players to back himup. Haskell no longer has Levi, butno Indian team ever lacks speed andthe willingness to battle to the end.Indian Tines have weight, too. For agame sandwiched in between the Indiana and Wisconsin battles, the Haskellcontest can hardly be called a breathing spell. No sir. Comanche, Piute,Sioux and Kickapoo will descend onthe blond north with a howl and awhirl and no one will know wherevictory is to rest until the fur stopsflying.
