NFL Coach an d Sports BroadcasterThe first quality that makes an athlete a winner issimply pride. He ha s such a desire to excel he willtake enormous pains. He will work ou t beyondwhat is demanded, build his body during th e off-season, guard his weight and study the problemsof his position. The second quality is toughness _doing what th e job requires without worryingabout the physical consequences. A wide receiverwill make th e catch, untroubled b? th e possibilityof getting blindsided. A quarterback '.viii hold th ebaJJ until th e final instant, knowing th e rusher willflatten him. The winning player ha s no fear indoing what must be done in order to be great.

    2. A muffed or fumbled fair catch which hits the groundis a free ball and belongs to the team that recovers it.

    3. No p]ayer can be within two yards of a player of thereceiving team positioned to catch a punt. You mustgive the returner an unmolested opportunity to catchthe ball. No contact on simultaneous touch, therefore, no timed hits. 15 yard penalty for contactfoul with J.lfair catch" signal, 5 yard penalty for non-contact foul or contact with no .tlfair catch" signal.

    GENERAL ZONE RULES

    1. Expect a block attempt each time we punt - donlt be surprised.

    2. Check your zone and then watch the football'Ctlie L4 and R4 should. useperipheral vision).

    3. Block the rusher with the proper technique - getting a piece of the rusheris never enough.

    4. Know how many rushers can challenge your zone and the zone to yourinside.

    5. Block two rushers by losing ground off the LOS.

    6. Never stay inside - post inside hand 1st, then work out to your man in'your' zone.

    7. Never anow a rusher to grab or cut you in order to free another rusherthrough your zone.

    8. Work together. One blocker breaking down in his zone is all it takes forus to fail.

    9. Recognize hold up.

    PROTECTION

Spread punt is a combination zone and man concept. We have the flexibility tozone both sides or combine man or zone to either side. We will always zonedrop regardless of man or zone.

ZONEKey the ban - get off on the snap. Set off the ball until you must take a stand. In zone protection must protect from inside your set. Your inside hand mustpunch immediately on your set. Outside hand \Yin come as you feel pressure. You must stay square and focus on your area and not a man. The vertical setand keeping a constant split relationship are vita1. The snapper win help to thezone side.

    COVERAGE PRINCIPLES

    1. Protect the punter first - then cover!

    2. Squeeze, gather, and breakdown - our coverage squeezes on the returnman - leverage and contain principles are maintained. As we approach,we must come under control by gathering and breaking down. Us e afocal point of five yards in front of the returner as the area to be ready totackle.

    3. Know where we are kicking the ball from - Hashl11iddle.

    4. Focus on the returner. He will lItake you" to the ball. On +50 punts, donlt look up bu t scan the horizon once you are 35 yards do'wn field.

    5. Be alert to bad punt. Immediatdy locate and front the ball. Avoid lettingit hi t you.

    6. Feel hold-up as soon as possible. Fight through hold-up to release.

    7. Do not fonow a teammate downfield - adjust and fill another lane.

    8. Keep leverage on the returner. Keep the returner inside and in front of

yo u (not even 'with the returner) .

    9. First coverage man dowTIfield should make returner stutter (breakdownposition) to let other cover people coverage on returner. If returnerfumbles or muffs ~ t h eban, make a decision to take him out or recover thebaH.

    10. If returner signals for fair catch (normal field position) 1st man downmust gather and expect a fumble. .

    ....

    11. Ifreturner signals for a fair catch (at the 10 yard line) - pass returner, findball, and dO\vll it inside the 10.

    12. Do not down a ball until it stops rolling (except inside 10). Do not touchit aDd \valk away. Pick it up and give it to the official.

    13. \Ve must give the returner ~ yards to field the kick. I f he removes"himself from the area we .9an catch the ball.

    PUNT PROTECTION AND COVERAGE

    1. Philosoph):. This phase of the kicking game -is the most important. The

outcome of many games has turned due to a blocked kick or long

return. For these reasons, this area demands more practice) timeand concentration.

II. hysical and Mental RequirementsA. Athletes with a strong sense of responsibility - people we can

count on to do their job. .B. Athletes with intelligence - people that know what to do and

    how to do it.C. Hitters

    m. TimingWe must perform our snap-to-punt process with the followingstandards:

    A. Snap (14 yards) 0.8 secondsPunter 1.2 secondsTotal Time 2.0 seconds or better

    B. If our sequence takes any longer than 2.0 seconds, 'we riskthe possibility of a block.

    C. Hang time (minimum) - 4.5 seconds
