’’THOUGH MANY, ONE

Some years ago, I was studying on the campus of our (United Methodist) Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. We had weekends off from our studies and the group of doctoral students of which I was part decided to take the train into New York City to worship at one of the historic churches there.

The sanctuary was beautiful and majestic. The preacher was gifted and the sermon inspiring. The choir sang beautifully. But best of all was the congregation itself.

The worshipers that day were so diverse! There were Africans in the traditional clothing and headdresses of their homeland; there were ragged-looking people who had parked their bags of

belongings at the back of the church (it appeared they were homeless). There were those dressed very comfortably in t-shirts and jeans, and others who had worn suits with ties or nice dresses. All shades of skin were there. One of the liturgists had a very New York accent to her speech, and another of Asian descent spoke in a way that made us know that English was not his first language.

And we all came to the same table.

All of us heard the same words of welcome, forgiveness and promise. All of us received the same gift of bread and wine. As one communion liturgy states, “we, though many, [were] one body…”

One of my favorite worship experiences of the entire year is coming up on October 1, as we celebrate World Communion Sunday. This is a day on which Christians all around the world – of many denominations and nationalities – celebrate our oneness in Christ by

receiving Holy Communion on the same day. Differences and divisions are set aside, as we all come to the same table of mercy and grace.

Thank God for the images and visions that speak to us of what can be and may one day be, with God’s help. Please make sure you don’t miss participating in this beautiful symbol – and may it draw us forward toward that day when “we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another..” (Romans 12:5)

See you Sunday,Kevin Tully

P.S: We will receive a special offering on World Communion Sunday, which will go to World Communion Scholars and Ethnic Scholarships, and In-service training programs. At least 50% of the offering is earmarked for ministries outside the United States.

The Jane Phillips School year began with many activities. Bartlesville First Church played a part, including serving ice cream to families on curriculum night. We also had volunteers serve by selling hotdogs and food at Atwoods

to make money for the school.

Bartlesville First Church has twelve reading volunteers and one substitute to help students learn their sight words. They work with the Pre-K through second-grade students to increase their reading skills. They will begin the week of Sept. 18.

Some of the upcoming events include serving breakfast to the Classified Staff on Oct. 11 during Classified Appreciation Week. Classified Staff are those that are not teachers such as secretaries, teacher’s aides and custodial staff. Contact Nancy Farmer if you are interested in helping

with this.

Volunteers are needed with field trips coming to the Pumpkin Patch. Pre-K and Kindergarten classes will visit on Wednesday, Oct. 18 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and the Kindergarten classes will visit on Wednesday, Oct. 25 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Volunteers will need to be at the church from 9-11 a.m. Volunteers are needed to lead groups of students around to the stations and to help at the stations. Some of the stations include: the petting zoo, horseback riding, bounce houses, a hay maze and games. At least eight volunteers are needed for each day.

The pre-school playground will begin construction in Oct. Many individuals and Small Groups contributed monetarily to this cause so with the combined efforts of many it will begin!!!

In December, the school will have their Santa’s Shop on Saturday, Dec. 9 and a gift wrapping day on Tuesday, Dec. 5. There will be a sign up for this in November.

The sign-ups for the Pumpkin Patch Field Trips are in the Atrium. If you have questions please contact Nancy Farmer at [email protected].
