1,969 pounds of fun An Oregon grower took home his third Half Moon Bay World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off title at the Oct. 12 event. Steve Daletas of Pleasant Hill, Ore. took home $11,814 for his winning gourd, which weighed 1,969 pounds. Daletas has entered the Half Moon Bay event on and off the last 20 years and has won it twice before, in 2001 and 2003. "It feels good," Daletas said. "This is one of the biggest weigh-offs in the world. To win in Half Moon Bay is always at the top of the list." Daletas beat out California siblings Ron and Karen Root, whose gourd weighed in at 1,806 pounds, to claim the top prize in the 42nd annual weigh-off. Jack LaRou of Tenino, Wash. came in third place with a 1,685 pound pumpkin.

Marvel at the pie-eating contestGet up close and personal for this hilarious test of unbridled power-eating. Huge, gasping audiences gather to witness this stunning spectacle with each participant devouring and “wearing” an 8-inch Safeway pumpkin pie heaped high with whipped cream. Panache and style go a long way with audi-ence judges. “To me, the pie-eating contest embod-ies the essence of Pumpkin Festival,” said Wilbur Collins, the spiritual and emotional leader of the contest organizing team for many years. “It encour-ages participation, it’s loads of fun, and it’s open to everyone.” Contests take place on both Saturday and Sunday, age 11 and under at 2 p.m., age 12 and over at 2:15 p.m. It’s in the Family Fun Zone in the Bank of America parking lot, 620 Main St.

Carve a pumpkinNoncompetitive pumpkin carving takes place in the Family Fun Zone. It is not a contest, there’s no judg-ing or awards … it’s simply for fun. Pumpkins and carving knives are provided. Create your very own masterpiece anytime between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Take 5 in the loungeSports fans have a place to kick back and catch NFL and NCAA football, and MLB playoff games on a giant LED screen in the Comcast Take 5 Lounge. It’s the perfect spot to take a break. Couch potatoes and sports fans will find the comfort and enjoyment of their own living room without ever leaving the event.

How often do you get to see and touch a mas-sive, hard-to-believe, larger-than-life one-ton pumpkin, let alone get to have your photo taken alongside something so extraordinary? Photos with the grand champion gourd will be available for $15. Your awesome one-of-a-kind photo will be snapped and instantly printed for a special take-home keepsake. Photo sales benefit the Cabrillo Education Foundation. The photo booth is at the corner of Main and Miramontes streets.

World’s largest pumpkin sculptureThe world’s largest pumpkin sculpture will be dis-played at both the festival and weigh-off. Lake Ta-hoe-based artist Peter Hazel, whose family has ties to the very first Pumpkin Festival, is the brilliant creator of the massive mosaic sculpture that mea-sures 12 feet long, 11 feet high and weighs 10,000 pounds. But, unlike other giant pumpkins, this one is made of steel, cement, and ceramic tile. “It’s only fitting for Half Moon Bay to have the world’s biggest mosaic pumpkin sculpture,” said Cam-eron Palmer, Pumpkin Festival chairman. Palmer hatched the idea with Hazel and commissioned the piece. Hazel plans to attend both the weigh-off and festival. Stop by the pumpkin sculpture to meet its creator.

Find harvest- inspired crafts

Buyers and browsers will find thousands of handcrafted items in well-stocked booths cov-ering several city blocks. It’s an ideal opportu-nity to meet 250 artists and craftmakers with

their latest creations. Featuring original work in sculpture, paintings, photography, glass, ceram-

ics, textiles, jewelry, leather, wood, metal and mixed media, the festival is considered among

the top art shows in the country. “We have long-time festival favorites returning as well as many talented, new artists this year,” said Kris Mason,

of the Pumpkin Festival committee.

Take part in the Pumpkin RunThe Pumpkin Run will be held at 8 a.m. on Sun-day at Hatch Elementary School on Kelly Avenue, just west of Highway 1. Visit the haunted house ... if you dareThe haunted Johnston Barn features live (undead) actors from the Coastside Young Actors Workshop alongside audio-animatronic figures, projected and transparent ghosts, intense lighting, sound, and fog effects. The real treat is the young actors themselves — students from grade school through high school trained in the art of improvisation and playing for an audience. The theme of each room is based on a script, but the performers are able to interact and play with the visitors’ reactions, making each tour a unique experience. The barn is located behind the historic jail at 505 Johnston Street. Admission is $7 per person. Children 3 and under are free.

Witness the costume contestHundreds of ghosts, goblins, ghouls and more mod-el their ingeniously creative Halloween attire in the costume contest. It’s a popular, time-honored fes-tival tradition before walking in the big parade. The costume contest is open to all ages with individu-al and group divisions. It takes place at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the Half Moon Bay Library parking lot, at Church and Correas streets. Festive food!

Dig in and help fatten the coffers of communi-ty groups while savoring mouthwatering, pump-kin-infused treats. Try some pumpkin pancakes, pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, pumpkin cake rolls, pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin smoothies, pump-kin churros … you get the idea. Then, move onto the next course with coastal favorites like Brus-sels sprouts steeped in a zesty marinara sauce, and artichoke hearts steamed with an aromatic blend of garlic, olive oil, and herbs. And that just scratches the surface. There will be Portuguese linguisa and Italian sausage sandwiches, chick-en, pork and beef tamales, hot beef sandwich-es, corn dogs, roasted turkey legs and, new this year, Dungeness crab and shrimp sandwiches.

California’s coastline is a welcoming, wonderful home to everything from surfers to seals — attracting visitors from around the world, around the year. Along the coast, protected areas are set aside to preserve a fragile community of animals and plants.

Know before you go.

To protect these natural wonders, here’s what to know before you go:

1.Stay at least

300 feet away from seals—this

is their home.

2. Don’t touch marine life

in tide pools.

3. Always

take away your trash.

4. Enjoy and

protect our marine

habitats.
