As ever my thanks to Tommy Knox for the following information on steam hauled Pullman services on the East Coast Main Line. Within the text reference is made to ‘Up’ and ‘Dn’ workings. These relate thus, an ‘Up’ working is a service to London Kings Cross, and ‘Dn’ is a ‘Down’ working from Kings Cross. I.e. All lines to any of London’s terminals are classified as the ‘UP Line’. Can you help Tommy? Tommy is updating the database on a daily basis and would be most grateful if any newsletter reader who undertook train spotting in steam days could look through their notebooks and if they find any information to contact him. Tommy is also happy to answer any reasonable enquiries if he can. My email address is [email protected].

Carriage & Wagon Update

Pullman Car News by Sheina Foulkes, Supervisor, Carriage & Wagon Department. Our expert machinist Paul Waldron is busy machining components such as W iron horn guides for Fingall’s bogies to replace life-expired parts. The photo below left shows the new castings, some of which have already been machined.

Work continues on many fronts on CAR No.54. The north end has been constructed and is now finally in place; the sliding lights are being refurbished; and arrangement being made for the casting of new table brackets. The seat trimming is progressing well, with our enthusiastic trimming team producing work of an extremely high standard.

The above photograph shows Peter Blythe reaming holes in the new south headstock, which were finally rivetted in position on January 28th.

CAR No.64 Gets a New Roof Cover. During the Pullman maintenance period it was decided to replace the aluminium sheeting roof cover on CAR No.64 (“Christine”) for a traditional canvas. In recent times there has been evidence of water ingress, and after the awful experience of having to partially rebuild “Fingall” a few years ago due to a similar roof covering problem, the decision was made to fit a canvas to CAR No.64 as soon as possible. Immediately the Pullman entered the paint shop, the cant rail and rain strips and all of the roof furniture and filler pipe assemblies were removed. The aluminium sheets were taken off to reveal the roof boards, which were new when the car had its last overhaul. Fortunately, the boards showed no sign of deterioration, but there were signs of water accessing them in the areas of the rain strips—the softwood boards had turned grey here. The shaped copper roof end covers were left in place. The roof was then allowed to completely dry out, and the canvas was spread out over it so that the creases could be reduced to a minimum. A date was chosen for the canvas fitting, and various regular volunteers were contacted to make sure that they would be available at the C&W on the day. With the use of all three scissor lifts, the team covered the roof between the copper end caps with a layer of roof canvas bonding compound, and the canvas was then stretched over it and fitted, one side at a time. After smoothing out carefully with wooden blocks, the excess canvas was trimmed off the ends and sides, and holes were cut for the fans and vents. Copper tacks keep the edges fixed down. The new canvas was then painted with a 50:50 white spirit-diluted coat of white undercoat, which soaked right into the material. After a sufficient drying time, a stronger undercoat was applied, and it has now had a full-strength undercoat. We are now looking at refitting the cant rail strips and new hardwood rain strips. The old rain strips, which had been formed of two PVCu sections side-by-side, are not being reused as on the west side they had become brittle and some breakage occurred on their removal. The roof will now need cinder boards fitted before the destination board brackets are reattached to stop cinders becoming trapped behind the destination boards and burning holes in the canvas. To save money these cinder boards have been guillotined from one of the old aluminium roof sheets. Thanks go to the staff and volunteers who have helped with this important task. There will be no let-up in getting on and finishing the roof job so that CAR No.64 will be ready for use when next required, but at least it will be well protected and available for traffic for many years. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PULLMAN CARS BARBARA and THEODORA. BARBARA. Barbara entered the Carriage and Wagon shed at the beginning of January 2019 to have new roof canvas fitted and a complete external repaint. Work commenced with the removal of all the roof furniture ( vents etc. ), guttering and cant mouldings so that the canvas on the roof could be peeled back to reveal the condition of the roof timbers. Both ends, particularly the curved, domed section needed replacing together with some of the main planks but nothing of the scale required to be repaired as on the Maunsell vehicles recently out shopped. While the roof was being stripped the whole of the outside was heavily sanded down which revealed areas which needed timber repairs to the south body side and in particular to the timbers above the vestibule doors. At the time of this report all the roof repairs are complete with all the old roofing compound removed, the boards sanded down, wood primer applied, and the new roof canvas laid on to allow any creases to drop out

The repair to the south side body work is progressing and while the vehicle is out of action upholstery repairs are being carried out off site. The roof canvas is due to be “glued” down this week (February 25th) then the painting will follow and the task of refitting all the roof furniture will commence. Once this element is finished Barbara will be moved out of its scaffolding bay to be replaced by Theodora. The external painting, lining and sign writing can begin. THEODORA. Theodora entered the shed at the same time as Barbara with its main work was to have new roof canvas fitted as the existing was time expired and leaked, damaging one of the marquetry frieze panels. A scaffolded walkway being erected, and Theodora was shunted into the bay ready to have the canvas stripped and replaced. The removal of the old canvas revealed a large amount of damaged wood which needed replacing but worse was to come when close inspection showed the vestibule end timbers had also suffered from water ingress and the decision was made to replace the whole of these main end timbers. This is not a quick process as these are the main structural timbers which support the corridor buffing gear together with the ends of the roof.

These works are now well under way with the Robertsbridge end nearing completion and the timbers for the Headcorn end being made in the joinery shop ready to be fitted. These works were not anticipated which will have the undesirable effect of delaying Theodora re-entering traffic. As soon as Barbara`s roof is finished and Theodora’s structural repairs are completed , Theodora will be shunted into the scaffolded bay to have its roof canvas fitted, which was its primary work when it entered the shed.

A Day in The Life Of “The Statesman” Pullman Train Manager Peter O’Brien.

©T.Bye - AY1092.

Class 47/4 No. 47479 “TRACK 29” Awaits departure from Carlisle with the “Settle-Carlisle Express” returning to Birmingham New Street.

In the days leading up to special trains, run by Manchester Executive Railway Company’s Private Pullman charter train “The Statesman” formed of 10 x ex BR Mk 2 1966 Pullman cars and Attendants coach were always frantic, with both food and wet stock ordering to be undertaken also all the freshly laundered linen collected. Then we had to ensure the freshly washed cutlery and crockery etc was checked for any damage and replaced as identified, but thankfully very few required replacing. The normal requirement for me commenced on the evening prior to the train working, at about 9pm I would meet up the Managing Director and we would make our way to Crewe Carriage Sheds, later to be we were relocated to a Liverpool Edge Hill. First priority was to ensure the food and wet stocks, lines, cutlery and crockery had been loaded, then a check on the train formation for the working and typically consisted as follows: - Parlour Brake, Parlour Car, Parlour Car, Parlour Car, Kitchen, Kitchen, Parlour Car, Parlour Car, Parlour Car, Parlour Car and the Attendants Coach.

The Manchester Executive Railway Company Coat of Arms. The on-board crew will have completed fully laying up the train, this included all linen table cloths napkins etc, these were all finest Irish Linen, table lamps, cutlery, crockery all cleaned polished and laid out on tables to our exacting standards, ready for the following days trip. I would then walk through the train and visually check each table met with my Pullman standard. Once the train was checked and all food etc loaded into fridges and the Kitchen Prep Areas, both the Managing Director and myself would then go through the train and shut all doors, and ensure the latches were on and the shore supply was plugged in to pre-heat or cool (depending on the season) the cars, and check all toilet and clean water tanks were filled, all charging leads in and cars on charge overnight. The train would normally be in the departure station approximately 30 minutes prior to departure, all stewards knew to which car they were allocated for the day. On a typical train working the crew would consist of 2 x Steward’s per car, with 1 x Chef and 2 x Kitchen assistants per kitchen, all the team worked well together and they knew what to do, so there was never any need for a team talk prior to the passengers joining the train. Once passengers started to arrive the stewards would stand at the vestibule the doors of their allotted car and greet passengers and show them to their reserved seats, and then on departure ensure all doors were closed and latched to prevent accidental opening during travel. On departure the food service could begin, and the stewards worked like a well-oiled machine all being professional stewards used to silver service on the move.

Stewards await to welcome passengers. On arrival at the destination station the stewards would unlock the vestibule door which in true Pullman tradition opened into the vestibule, the steward would then stand on the platform by the door entrance to assist passengers de-train. Typically, I would remain in the attendant’s coach during food service and the on-board staff could come and find me in the event of any problems during these times. Following food service, I would usually walk through the train and talk with passengers ensuring that they were happy and also chat with the stewards and kitchen staff.

Kitchen First CAR No. 506 “THE RED ROSE”. One memorable working being from Crewe to Carlisle scenic land cruise via the Settle and Carlisle line, we had brought the cars down from their new base at Liverpool Edge Hill, as we were stopped awaiting passengers joining the train at Crewe, a fitter walked along and red carded the kitchens,(not allowed to travel on the BR Network) with them being gas cars and the powers that be unsure if any private owner gas cars could run on a soon to be broken up and privatised railway system. What followed was a frantic round of phone calls, to get the cards lifted, after a few safety checks were undertaken and the red cards were lifted and we could carry on to Carlisle with the passengers unaware of the drama that had just occurred a few minutes earlier. Thankfully the rest of the journey passed off without any incidents. Thankfully these issues were very rare and we could normally get them sorted in a few minutes using a network of contacts built up following a lifetime of railway charter work.

AMIS DES WAGONS-LITS Our Aims. We are a dedicated group of friends from France, Belgium, Spain, Austria, The Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Romania, Ukraine, United Kingdom whose specialist knowledge of CIWL allows us to: - 1. Keep in contact with owners of CIWL cars. 2. Monitor the movement, transfers, sales of CIWL cars world-wide. 3. Keep alive the interest in CIWL cars; their history and evolution and future developments by today’s operators. 4. Review new books and films with their special CIWL interest. 5 . Publish a regular feature on a Heritage Railway that operates one or more CIWL cars. 6. Report progress on the restoration of existing CIWL cars. 7. Report on current Night Train and tour train operations throughout Europe. 8. Set out just how CIWL car attendants did their work.

We believe that there is an ongoing interest in what has happened to the many hundreds of CIWL cars and especially those that are scattered around Europe and beyond. There is still a substantial interest in the world of these iconic trains and their blue coloured livery, sleeping cars, restaurant cars and Pullman cars. The IRPS has gallantly published its journal for 10 years following the demise of the WagonsLits Society in 2008, and we also recognise the considerable effort by colleagues in Europe who in turn have contributed a lot over the years. We plan to include one article every issue in the language of one of our member countries. Space will not allow us to produce it with a bilingual text even so Danish, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Romania, the possibilities are limitless. In conclusion, we are excited about this magazine, but simply ask you to pass on the word and then if you would like to receive a copy regularly to mail us. Under the data Protection Act we will need your agreement to keep a note of your e-mail address. We will run on a not-for-profit basis, hopefully with some sponsorship funding from railway museums and study organisations. Costs will be controlled and will inevitably include printing and postage expenses that will entail a subscription charge for members. February 2019 - First Newsletter Details. We are about to launch the first edition of “Amis des Wagons-lits” CIWL newsletter. This first very comprehensive 29-page edition will be in a pdf format and if anyone would like a copy, they should please register with either: - 1. Brendan Martin [email protected] or 2. Christopher Elliott [email protected] To be featured in this edition will be: - Remaining CIWL cars - February 2019. The Luxury end of the Market. ACC Ingénierie & Maintenance - Clermont Ferrand. “The Hotel Cipriani Express”.

The Hotel Cipriani, Venice. Before proceeding I will answer the question as to why the title “The Hotel Cipriani Express”. We turn the clock back forty-three years to 1976 when Sea Containers Ltd, purchased their first hotel the Cipriani in Venice. Following the Hotel’s purchase, the next date of interest was May 11th, 1977 when the final “Direct-Orient-Express/Marmara Express” departed Paris for Istanbul, the final departure brought the Worlds press and television to report the demise of the historical service. Sea Containers Ltd, were at this time viewing potential ways to increase the patronage of the Cipriani, with the demise of the “Orient-Express” this was seen as a possible source of patronage by bringing them by train from the United Kingdom and Western Europe to Venice by a restored train. Without the Hotel Cipriani it is doubtful that Sea Containers would have restored the world’s most Iconic train the Venice Simplon Orient-Express as we know it today, so hence the title of this history “The Hotel Cipriani Express”. The Hotel Cipriani. The Hotel Cipriani was opened in 1958 by Giuseppe Cipriani, who was the founder of Harry’s Bar in Venice and inventor of the Bellini cocktail. The rooms were decorated with Venetian furnishings, including Murano glass chandeliers, Fortuny fabrics and Venetian artworks. The hotel achieved instant acclaim. As already mentioned in 1976, the Hotel Cipriani was purchased by Sea Containers Ltd, which established a leisure division named Orient-Express Hotels Ltd. In the Spring of 2014, the Hotel Cipriani was rebranded as the Belmond Hotel Cipriani as part of the complete rebranding of Orient-Express Hotels as Belmond Ltd. The Direct-Orient-Express/Marmara-Express. The curtain call for the “Direct-Orient-Express/Marmara-Express” was undertaken on May 11th, 1977 when the final departure from Paris for Istanbul. This brought to the end of 94 years of Wagon-Lits service that commenced on October June 5th, 1883 from Paris to Constantinople via train, boat, train and boat. It was not until 1889 when the railway track was completed giving a direct route from Paris to Constantinople. The Sotheby’s Monte Carlo Auction. On October 8th, 1977 an Auction took place at Monte Carlo of five CIWL Orient-Express Cars. On the morning of October 7th, the five cars to be auctioned by Sotheby’s on behalf of Wagon-Lits undertook a journey from Nice to Monte Carlo. Departing Nice 19 minutes late, the journey hugged the Mediterranean coastline and normally takes 20 minutes, this journey took 54 minutes. Sotheby’s Peter Wilson and Paul Bianchini (who liaised between Sotheby’s and Wagon-Lits) took their places on the auction platform. Attending the auction was James Sherwood of Sea -Containers Ltd with Lord Garnock and William McAlpine and Gérard Gallet.

Wagon-Salon Pullman No. 2741 Swisstrain. Wagon-Lits Lx No. 3489 Unrestored and Stored externally at SNCB Wagon Workshop at Haine St.Pierre, Belgium. Wagon-Lits Lx No. 3543 Restored and operational within the Continental formation of the Venice Simplon Orient-Express. The Venice Simplon Orient-Express. The Cars. With the successful purchase of two cars No.34891&2 & 35431 they were the start of the Venice Simplon Orient-Express project which would eventually lead to the private luxury train service from London to Venice and other European cities. In the period from October 8th, 1977 to May 25th, 1982 Sea Containers acquired 23 x CIWL cars for the continental train and 11 x Pullman cars and ex LNER Brake Van for the United Kingdom train at a cost of £11 million for purchase and restoration. The restoration of the continental cars was undertaken at two workshops, 10 x cars were refurbished at the Wagon-Lits Slykens Workshops, Ostend, and 8 x cars were refurbished at the Bremer Waggonbau workshops at Bremen. The renovation was made with some technical modifications, to match both stringent safety standards and comfort requests, for example the dining cars were fitted with modern kitchens. They have also become air-conditioned, which was introduced in 2017 even in the sleeping cars. In the mid-2000’s the original bogies were changed to brand new ones to achieve higher speeds (160 km/h instead of 140 km/h). The restoration of the United Kingdom cars was initially undertaken at Steamtown, Carnforth and from the mid 1980’s at VSO-E Stewarts Lane Workshops & Depot. The renovation was made with some technical modifications, to match both stringent safety standards and comfort requests, for example the kitchen cars were fitted with modern kitchens. All the Pullman cars were fitted with LNER Gresley Double Bolster Bogies. In 1989 ex-Brighton Belle car AUDREY was re-bogied with BR ‘B5’ type bogies, and the later restorations of ex-Brighton Belle cars VERA & GWEN were fitted with BR ‘B5’ type bogies.

In the period from May 25th, 1982 to 2000 Sea Containers purchased a further 13 x Pullman cars within the United Kingdom. In the period 1988 to 2002 Sea Containers disposed of 6 x Pullman cars to private individuals and preserved railways within the United Kingdom. As of January 2019 Belmond, have in unrestored condition 5 x CIWL stored at the SNCB Wagon Workshop at Haine St.Pierre, Belgium (Closed in 2005), and at Belmond Stewarts Lane Depot a total of 7 x Pullman cars. The unique histories of the VSO-E restored cars cover the period from the eldest car built in 1925 and the youngest in 1952. In the outside period of normal service during 2016, 16 x continental cars went through the workshops of ACC Ingénierie et Maintenance at Clermont Ferrand, France, as part of their annual maintenance and inspection. In addition, ACC have undertaken improvements and restoration work on both the Continental and United Kingdom cars. Of note is the movement by rail from the United Kingdom via the channel Tunnel Pullman car PHOENIX to the works in March 2017 for complete restoration of the car. The car returned to the United Kingdom by rail in April 2018. A second Pullman car PERSEUS undertook the same journey in the summer of 2018. The Venice Simplon Orient-Express Operation - London to Venice. The United Kingdom Operation - London to Folkestone. On May 25th, 1982 the inaugural service of the restored Venice Simplon Orient-Express commenced from London Victoria Station to Venice St.Lucia Station, operating three times a week within the umber and cream liveried Pullman cars, all the cars have individual names, confirming that they are indeed First-Class cars with individual armchairs. The route undertaken by the United Kingdom train from London Victoria Station via the Garden of England (Kent) to Folkestone -Harbour Station. Passengers then transferred to a Cross Channel Ferry for the journey across the channel to Boulougne. The crossing of the English Channel from 1982 until the early 1990’s was by cross channel ferry, this was followed in the early 1990’s by the SeaCat, both had designated seating areas for VSO-E passengers. With the opening of the Channel Tunnel in 1994 it was only a matter of time before the cross-channel ferry service from Folkestone was terminated. The termination of cross channel service then saw the termination of normal passenger train services to Folkestone Harbour Station. The VSO-E continued to use Folkestone Harbour Station, passengers detained to travel in luxury road coaches to the Cheriton Channel Tunnel terminal for conveyance under the English Tunnel to Calais to recommence the Journey within the restored CIWL cars. With only the VSO-E and the occasional enthusiast special train travelling the Harbour Branch line it was only a matter of time when the end was in sight for Folkestone Harbour Station and the branch line. The final VSO-E service to Folkestone Harbour Station was undertaken on November 13th, 2008. The VSO-E service from the opening of the 2009 season terminated at Folkestone West Station, where a designated waiting room for passengers was made available, once detrained the journey recommenced by Luxury coaches via the Channel Tunnel to Calais

The Continental Operation - Boulogne & Calais to Venice. The original 1982 service commenced at Gare de Boulogne-Maritime with passengers disembarking from the cross-channel ferry and joining the Continental train which from 1982 until 1984 was routed Boulogne, Paris, Lausanne, Simplon Tunnel, Milan, Verona to Venice Santa Lucia station. What became apparent during 1982 to 1984 operation was that the superb scenery was being missed as it was being passed during the overnight section of the journey. In the summer of 1984 for two months only a trial was undertaken by the re-routing of the train from Boulogne, Paris, Zurich, Arlberg Tunnel, St.Anton, Innsbruck, Brenner Pass, Verona to Venice Santa Lucia station. The trial was a great success with the superb Alpine scenery available in day light during both the South and North bound journeys. As of the commencement of the 1985 operation the revised route was undertaken, to which the service remains operational. With the opening of the Channel Tunnel in 1994 it was only a matter of time before the cross-channel ferry service from Folkestone was terminated. The VSO-E continued to use Folkestone Harbour Station, passengers detained to travel in luxury road coaches to the Cheriton Channel Tunnel terminal for conveyance under the English Tunnel to Calais to recommence the Journey within the restored CIWL cars. Passenger today join the train at Calais to join the sleeping cars and dining cars of the former Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits for onward travel via Paris, Zurich, Innsbruck, Verona and finally Venice. The continental train formation consists of 18 cars, 12 x sleeping cars, 3 x dining cars, 1 x bar car and two former sleepers, which provide accommodation for the staff and storage rooms for luggage and supplies as well. The ‘LX’ class sleepers have nine double compartments, while the ‘S1’ class sleepers accommodate 17 passengers in four double and nine single compartments. The formation of the continental train from the commencement of the service in 1982 until 2017 remained the same, but in the Spring of 2018 a new class was introduced ‘The Grand Suite’ with the refitting of the sleeping car No.3425. The car contains three suites (Paris, Istanbul and Venice) and include double or twin bed layout, a drawing saloon with a sofa (which is convertible to a third bed) and en-suite bathroom. The operations of both the VSO-E within the United Kingdom and Continent were rebranded in the Spring of 2014 to Belmond Ltd, under the Belmond name the operations continued which also included 45 luxury hotels, restaurants, tourist trains and river cruises in 24 countries. In November 2017 the ”Northern Belle” was acquired by West Coast Railway and thirteen months later in December 2018 Belmond Ltd was acquired by LVMH in a transaction expected to close in the first half of 2019.

As ever my thanks to all the readers who have contributed to both this newsletter edition and the PCS-Archive. Without these contributions this edition would not have been possible. The NYMR must be congratulated on the superb restoration of Pullman car “GARNET”. The three year restoration project has restored the car interior as introduced on the ECML in 1960. “GARNET” is the only surviving 1960/1 Parlour First in with original style saloon and Coupés. Sumptuous armchairs await the passengers, each having a window view and not forgetting the high standard exterior restoration into umber and cream with lining, coat of arms and car name. At this stage I have not a complete list of all those involved in “GARNET’S” restoration, but rest assured this will be addressed within a planned “Special Edition” covering “GARNET’S” preservation on the NYMR through to the completion of the current restoration project. With the publication on February 28th, of the first “AMIS DES WAGONS-LITS” newsletter, I have decided that the CIWL section within this edition of the newsletter will be last. “AMIS DES WAGONS-LITS” will cover more in depth news and articles and such I hope that you will support the new newsletter team by registering for a copy of the first newsletter and also contributing with articles , photographs and news in the same way that you have supported me.
