Land reclamation

• Land reclamation is the process where useless land is reclaimed and turned into land that can be used

• Land reclamation will allow the resort to be built with minimal damage to the island itself as we will be using a fairly unproductive patch of the seabed instead

Importance of coastal management

• Waves can erode the coastline and can destabilise any structures built on it

• Proper management of the coast is essential for any beachfront resort

Coastal management• To protect the coast, we will be using

wooden groynes as a temporary measure• An artificial coral reef will be grown to

replace the wooden groynes • Groynes are inexpensive and coral reefs

are “green” as they are natural, renewable• They also require zero maintanence as the

coral will replace itself

Steps that need to be taken

• Perform more detailed surveys of area to ensure minimal environmantal impact

• Clean up the beaches

• Clean up the water around the beach

• Use beach nourishment to extend the coastline

• Concrete to build the structure as concrete is sturdy and strong

• Plant greenery all around to go with “green theme”

• Use bamboo to build the furniture as it is fast growing

• Solar panels on roofs to minimize space used and to go along with “green theme”

• Solar panels is renewable and abundant

• Energy produced by solar panels can be stored for a rainy day

Energy-saving practices

• Appliances can only be used, switched on when card key is inserted into slot at the door

• This will ensure that energy will not be wasted if the appliances are accidentally not switched off and the user is not around

Green practices

• Energy-saving light bulbs will be used instead of the conventional ones

• These light bulbs are as efficient as conventional ones and save much more energy

• Water from showers and taps will be used to flush toilets

• Minimize water usage, which goes along with “green” theme

• Recycling bins will be placed all over the resort

• Posters will be put up all over to encourage the customers to minimize waste

• Rooms that uses the least water, throws away wins prizes such as free lunch or dinner

• Banana boat rides

• We will be negotiating with Outward Bound Singapore to organize some activities for the people at the resort

• Outward Bound is internationally recognized and hence can attract people

• Free rides to Outward Bound daily on solar-powered vehicles
