Puerto Vallarta• The Spanish began calling it Banderas Valley in 1525, the
name used by the earliest culture which settled in the area. It was renamed Las Peñas de Santa María Guadalupe after Mexico´s Independence and shortened to Puerto Las Peñasduring the years of the silver mining boom in nearby San Sebastián and Mascota. In 1918 it was named Puerto Vallarta after Ignacio L. Vallarta, lawyer, jurist, and state governor.
