Publisher's Note

In order to conform with the provisions of the United States Copyright Law that came into effect on 1 January 1978, users of this journal should note the following:

- - A u t h o r s resident in the U.S.A. will be asked to transfer copyright in writing on a form provided by the Editor.

- - R e a d e r s will notice that some papers carry a multi-digit code at the foot of the first page. This code signifies that Elsevier Sequoia participates in the non-profi t Copyright Clearance Center. The Center will approve copying beyond that legally permit ted in the U.S.A. providing details of the material copied and the fee established by the publisher are sent to the Center. The fee for each copy of all or part of a paper is stated in the final digits of the code. The address of the Copyright Clearance Center, to which the fee is to be paid, is ment ioned in the Copyright Sta tement on the back cover of the journal.
