PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

As we head towards the end of term school life does not appear to be slowing down. This week students have attended the Newcastle Herald School News Awards, a Liquor Accord Workshop on drug and alcohol issues, Swim School, and a Disco for Year 7 2013.

New appointments Last week I mentioned a new Head Teacher position had been established in secondary due to an increase in student numbers, Head Teacher Vocational Educational and Training (VET).

I am pleased to announce that Jane Hegarty was the successful applicant for the position, and will take up the new role at the start of 2013. Jane brings a wealth of experience and local knowledge to the position and is an outstanding classroom teacher. I congratulate Jane on her appointment.

The second appointment to be made this week is the secondary visual arts position. Once again we are very fortunate to have a very dedicated and enthusiastic member of our school team Rebecca Hopkins appointed to this permanent position. Rebecca has shown great leadership as a new scheme teacher taking on roles with the Student Representative Council and Star Struck team in 2012. We are very excited to have Rebecca join our staff on a permanent basis. Parent concerns At times parents may become aware of difficulties their child is having with their classmates, or other children in the playground. In the first instance parents should encourage

their child to raise these types of issues with their classroom teacher. If the matter is not resolved then it is a good idea to follow it up with a parent teacher interview. It is not appropriate however, for parents to enter the playground and confront other children directly. Whilst I can understand the frustration of parents at times, it is important that the teaching staff be allowed to follow due process to protect all concerned. News Flash! Merriwa Central School students win Newcastle Herald School News competition. More details next week.

REMINDERREMINDER

The last Ringer for Term 4, 2012, will be Thursday 20 December.

The Ringer will resume in Term 1, 2013 on Thursday 7 February

The deadline will be 12 noon Monday 4 February as per usual.

CAPTAINS SPEECHES Last Friday, 23 November, 9 students from year 5 presented speeches to students, teachers and parents at the Primary campus as candidates for School Captain for the 2013 school year. The nominees were Benjamin Keane, Victoria McNaught, Lachlan Walker, Alana Smith, Naketta Cameron, Jasmine Hammond, Blake Smith, Joseph Whaley and Alicia Clydsdale. It was great to hear everyone speak as they gave their best effort to promote themselves to the assembly. After the assembly primary students went back to class to vote for the candidates they felt would best be captain or prefect for next year. Students who were absent will be able to vote until Wednesday 28 November at which time voting will close and the votes will be tallied. Well done to all the candidates – you all did a great job presenting your speeches.

SWIMMING SCHEME

For the last couple of weeks the Primary students have been participating in the Learn to Swim program at the local pool. Mrs Osmond, Ms Eipper and Lisa ran lessons in the first week. Students were tested to check their level of swimming and then groups were formed based on those levels. Students have been given the opportunity to develop their confidence in swimming as well as improving in their stroke and basic survival swim skills. More capable students have been refining their skills with Mrs West using the squad program to refine various swimming techniques and develop more complex survival swimming skills.

ASSEMBLY Our next Assembly is this Friday 30 November and our performance will be students who participated in dance as part of Creative and Performing Arts groups in term 3 & 4. All parents are welcome to attend.

KINDERGARTEN TRANSITION Our last transition day is next Tuesday 4 December. Thank you to all the parents for your support of the program. It has been a great benefit to your children and our year 5 buddies have really enjoyed working with the class. The last transition day will be a full day for the group and they will need to have fruit break, recess, lunch, 2 water bottles and a hat for playtime. Parent interviews will happen on the 11 December and parents will be contacted regarding their interview time. Thank you to Mrs Strachan for all her hard work and dedication to our new students. This experience gives them a great understanding of what will happen at big school next year.

Rebecca West Assistant Principal

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE During Week 7 Year 10 students participated in a week of work experience where they could gain some insight into the real world of work and the different aspects of the industry they chose to work in. From all reports students enjoyed the experience and were involved in a number of different tasks. I am looking forward to reading their work experience journals.

SRC GRIP LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE REPORT

On Tuesday, 6 November, the SRC members of Year 9/10 was driven down to Newcastle to attend the GRIP Leadership Conference being held at Civic Hall Newcastle. The aim of this conference was to show how young students can develop the qualities of a great leader & how to implement them in their school. There was four main workshops and two optional workshops teaching students how to do an inspirational speech, to how to show leadership in sporting events & how to organise for events.

We were all pleased with what we got out of this conference and have learnt valuable information which we will be able to apply in our school. A big thanks to Mr Creamer & Mrs McLoughlin for driving us students to Newcastle and back.

GREAT AUSSIE BUSH CAMP

Students from Years 7 to 12 had the opportunity to attend the Great Aussie Bush Camp for four days from the 13-16 November. We all jumped on the bus and made our way to the camp at Tea Gardens; excited and looking forward to this action packed week. On arrival, the students were taken on an orientation tour and got to know our two instructors Lacey and James who looked after us for the week.

First up was the Leap of Faith where we climbed up a 9 metre telegraph pole, stood on the top and jumped off, trying to grasp the trapeze bar. The taller boys such as Connor and Isaac barely had to reach out to grab the bar, but others had a bit more trouble. Some of us with an aversion to heights definitely faced our fears on this day, with the Giant Swing next on the agenda.

Throughout the week, we canoed, abseiled, climbed high ropes, got extra muddy in the Lost Island obstacle course (especially Tasia, Alicia and Taylah) and worked together to complete the Team Challenge. We also got camouflaged and played Commando (Spotlight) in the bush, trying to find the bag of Skittles that was being closely guarded by the stealthy Mr Duncan.

Day trips to Jimmy‟s Beach at Hawks Nest, Mungo Brush rainforest and the massive Sand Dunes were all heaps of fun, with snorkelling, kayaking and beach games keeping us amused and refreshed during the warm days.

P&C NEWS LAST MEETING FOR 2012

The Merriwa Central School P&C will hold their last meeting for the year on Wednesday 5 December at the Merriwa RSL Club, starting at 7pm. This meeting will be a short one and everyone is invited to bring a plate of finger food to share afterwards.

A reminder that subs are now due. You need to be a paid member one month prior to the Annual General Meeting which is scheduled to be held in March 2013.

Elaine Russell President

During the evenings, we heard Mad Dog‟s ghost stories, told jokes by the campfire and got up to some practical joke mischief with the help of Bill the Night Supervisor.

Overall, it was an awesome week, everyone was well behaved and enthusiastic - as per usual we were told by our Instructors, Bill and the Camp Manager that Merriwa Central students were some of the best behaved and respectful students they‟d had at the camp. Everyone should be proud of the fears they overcame, the goals they achieved and the way we all represented the school.

Thanks again to all the parents for making the camp possible this year, and the students for taking up this great opportunity!

CASSILIS PUBLIC SCHOOL

We are set for a warm time this week. For students to do their best learning, please continue to ensure that your child has their hat, water bottle and fruit. Remember: No hat, sit on the veranda outside the classrooms (not in time-out). Student of the Week

Taine Nash has led our school‟s representitive body this year as school captain. We were especially impressed and proud of Taine last week. Even though there is only three weeks of primary schooling to go, he continues to be a leader through example and follows each one of our

school rules. I noticed Taine being respectful when he spoke to all students last week and encouraged other students to join in the skipping game he was playing with his friends. It means a lot when a student is asked to play a game. It makes them feel happy. Taine wrote very good sentences over the week using verbs. He is a descriptive writer who varies his subject matter. During number patterns, Taine did his best work and repeatedly attempted another activity to challenge himself and took advice given by teachers. Congratulations Taine! You should feel very proud of yourself. We had a „ball‟ at mini-golf! There were a couple of „hole in ones‟, a few jokes about needing a spare pair of socks in

case you get a „hole in one‟ and some great

golfing skills last Thursday afternoon. We got to play lots of putt putt and students were very proud of their scores at the end. Thanks to the Merriwa Sports Club for providing a fun course. Thank you also to our parents, Mrs Nash, Mrs Nairne and Mrs Singh, who provdied transport. Active After School continues this Thursday at school.

Many thanks for Ann and the staff at Haynes IGA for inviting Cassilis to decorate its front window. I have had many great comments from the public about our students bright, creative and clever work. Well done, Cassilis! You could be the very lucky winner! Thank you to the families who have begun to sell the raffle tickets. Disco Time! Next Friday night is our disco beginning at 6:30pm and finishing at 8pm. The theme is „Glitz and Glamour‟. I might need to search through my clothes this week to find something to wear. Cassilis Student Christmas Lunch - The annual student Christmas lunch will be held on Tuesday, 18 December. Students are asked to please bring in $4 to help cover the cost of the food and drink. Santa will hold off his visit until the next day. Open Day Christmas Party - Students and families of Cassilis Public School and children and families living in or around Cassilis are invited to our Open Day Christmas Party on Wednesday, 19 December at Cassilis Public School from 9am to 12pm. ST JOSEPH‟S PRIMARY SCHOOL

Congratulations to Kirston Bridge (mum of Kasey and Madelaine) and Murray Wright who were married last Saturday. On behalf of the School community I wish them a very happy marriage.

Congratulations to Nicole, Darcy and Emily who all made their F i r s t H o l y Communion in St Anne‟s Church on Sunday. This completes their j o u r n e y o f initiation into the

church. Thank you to Sr Brigid and Samantha Kerr as well as the other teachers for your assistance in preparing the children for the Sacraments. We enjoyed a lovely community morning tea after Mass and this was a wonderful way to show our support for the children in their faith journey. We thank God for the safe arrival of Skylah Grace Claxton last week. A beautiful baby sister for Reba and daughter for Jennifer and Cameron and granddaughter to Heather. Congratulations one and all! Thank you to Jenny and Robert Lee and Merriwa Hardware for their recent plant donations to our school. The school will certainly be making good use of these gifts in one way or another for the benefit of all our students. Thank you to Shane and Natalie for special cleaning of bus during the last fortnight when there was accidently no one rostered on.

Advent is almost upon us now and we use this time in our church year to really prepare ourselves for the coming of Christ. The children have been looking at ways we can help God‟s Kingdom to spread here on earth as it is in heaven. In our rush and hurry as Christmas approaches I hope we can all spend a little time reflecting on how we can help spread God‟s Kingdom. The Stage Three children identified with me on Friday lots of ways other people try to think about others at Christmas time. Some work in homeless refuges to bring Christmas dinner, some donate money to charity. They were able to identify things they do at school and at home to prepare our hearts for Christ. We sing and entertain the sick, the elderly and the Merriwa community, we donate food to the St Vincent de Paul hampers, we buy gifts for family and friends to say “I love you”, and we gather together as family. We think these things are good ways that they, as children, can spread God‟s love. What‟s On in National Partnerships? Last week all our teachers took time out to visit another school also participating in the National Partnership program at present. The purpose of their visit was to look at what that school was doing in Literacy and to compare their progress to our own. The teachers were all very excited upon their return to report that they are very confident that the progress we have made is significant and that they had been able to swap ideas and resources freely with their matching teacher. The week before last I visited two school principals from another diocese and discussed out NP progress and shared practices and experiences for the day. This was a very valuable experience for me also. I would like to thank all the teachers for their effort to

participate in this learning and also thank the teachers and principals from St Joseph‟s Bulahdelah, St Michael‟s Dunedoo and All Hallows Gulgong for their generosity. Last fortnight the AGM of the Parents and Friends Association was held. Thank you to all who attended and to those who accepted positions. I was very happy to see almost all executive positions and committee positions filled in such a generous manner. I really am looking forward to a year of close partnership between the parents and the school and this association is the vehicle to assist in meeting this goal. The new committee is - President – Dermot Shannon Vice President – Max McNaught Secretary – Emma Henderson Treasurer – Clare Martin Please see the P&F news for information on Committee members. Congratulations one and all and a huge thank you to the outgoing executive and committee members who have served us so well throughout the year. We welcome all our new Kindergarten children for 2013 again to school on Thursday. This day is part of our extensive orientation program in which the new kindies gain confidence and a sense of school readiness in preparation for their start to school next year. The teachers have been gaining a great deal of information about the children also which enables them to start to prepare for the new year‟s teaching. All children throughout the school will move into their new classrooms for the day this Thursday.

Swimming lessons are progressing very well. Congratulations to all children who have managed to learn something in their lesson and to get their belongings back to school ready for the next lesson. Clothing labelled with the child‟s name assists students and teachers in this regard. This Friday a representative from the Hunter Melanoma Foundation will speak to the children about Sun Safety. Please reinforce the sun safety message at home. Thank you to all parents who remind the children of the need to wear their school hats to and from school. The K/1/2 excursion to the Art Gallery was a great success last Monday. The children loved the experience. There will be more news on this in the next newsletter. There are a couple of photos included today to show the enjoyment children were having at the Art Gallery.

Not to be left out, the 3/4 class had a fabulous day visiting Woolworths and the butcher in Muswellbrook as well as the Sandy Hollow Art Gallery. The children have reported that they had a great day and learned a lot.

Thank you to all the parents who assisted on both of these excursions either through accompanying the class or by providing transport. These days cannot continue without your support and the children and teachers appreciate your generosity. Merriwa Christmas Street Party Carols are going to be held again on Thursday 6 December at 4.30pm – 5.30pm. This tradition began several years ago when the students of St Joseph‟s School walked with their teachers into each shop in Bettington St and brought the Christmas message and good will to all through their carolling. The tradition is alive and well today and now includes children from all schools who would like to join us in this wonderful advent action. We have been practising carols at any opportunity and the children are very good already. We encourage children to wear something Christmassy and we provide some hats. We would love to see everyone there.

SURVEY RESULTS

Below is a summary of the surveys, recently filled out by parents.

Ways parents want to be involved Pre-school Website- We are looking into

it. Include short video clips to view online. Morning tea, for parents and children to

enjoy. Look at doing this once a term, (possibility not include term 1 as new children are still settling in), or during Winter have an afternoon tea

Gardening and vegies. We are doing this at the moment

Involved with arts Keep talking and keep communications

open Performance night and end of year play.

This is planned for the end of year (daytime). Note to go out soon

One parent suggested to place on notice board information for parents to outline program times e.g. when music is on so that parents can feel free to join in. Need to do a laminated information sheet for Parents to be aware of how our day runs Summer and Winter

Music/dance from different cultures - possibility of a live performer. Have recently had an African drummer and African storyteller. We try and take advantage of opportunities from different cultures when they become available to us.

MERRIWA ACTIVITY CENTRE After School and Vacation Care

Catering for 5 – 12 year olds

“The Pre-school is improving every day; it is great to see how it has come over my time and my child‟s time.”

A bigger veggie patch “Very happy with the way Pre-school is

set up and moving.” Family tree - start a display for children.

Plans already in place for this. Parents have been asked to bring along a picture of their family for a 2013 display. Some have responded already! Thank you!

More days for four year olds. (We currently offer the possibility of 3 days, though we are currently full. Good if parents can get details on Waiting List as early as possible.)

One parent suggested bringing back the digital photo frame. We only stopped this as no parents were viewing the pictures. We acknowledge parents have a schedule in the afternoon to often collect other children. Let us know if more parents are able to view. A lot of work for Educators if no–one views

One parent suggested more orientation days for new children to get used to Pre-school. (Just gets difficult with large numbers of children in attendance, and also running the regular Pre-school program. Any further ideas?)

Any questions? Pre-school gate needs to be self-closing.

Thank you. Though it is, from time to time it needs adjusting. It has since been adjusted and an additional spring attached.

“I‟ll be sad to say goodbye when my child moves on to big school.”

Availability next year- 2013 enrolments have been posted.

“Thanks for everything, lucky to be involved in such a lovely service.”

Thank you to parents for your feedback. We will continue to reflect and improve with your suggestions. Summary prepared by Jessyca Morgan, Leah Folpp and Jill Martyn

MERRIWA PRE-SCHOOL & KINDERGARTEN ASSOCIATION

We have been having some fantastic fun at the pool these last few weeks with the water absolutely beautiful! It has been nice to see our older children assisting the young in the water. Unfortunately our camera has broken so we are unable to give you any photos this week. We look forward to Christmas coming upon us this year with only 4 weeks to go, it‟s unbelievable. I have been here 12 months now, and the fantastic times I have had in my time at MAC along with the great company of the children, their families and staff. I guess now we start getting out the tinsel, decking out our houses and gather our families together. In turn with all this we hope to shine light on the Christmas aspect of “gathering”

and family importance, and not just the presents, as the children have already been telling giving us their orders for Jo and I to buy for them! We hope to take a trip next Thursday to support the local Merriwa Christmas Street party. Both Jo and I being non-locals have been having a blast experiencing all the hospitality of Merriwa. Keep your eyes peeled at MAC as we begin to decorate our building with the children for the Festive Season! 28 days to go!!

Whenever the need arises with the command “Ready please Mrs. Music” there our Barbara is, be it Sunday by Sunday, Friday mornings, Funerals & special occasions. The sound of the lovely music emanating from the organ is pure bliss. How very grateful we are to have such

talent to lead us in our worship & sing praises to the Lord. This year Barbara has been continuously playing the organ in “Holy Trinity” for 30 years. This achievement was celebrated & acknowledged with love & gratitude at the Confirmation service by Bishop Peter Stuart on 22 July 2012.

Well done Barbara for using your wonderful talent to the Glory of God, and for enabling all of us to hear the joyful sound of music at “Holy Trinity”

GARDENING WITH SHIRLEY

Planting in Summer There is still a lot of planting that can be done during the hot months, just ensure you water plants in areas that don‟t get much rain at this time of the year (What rain?) and keep the mulch topped up to help keep moisture in the soil. Anything you plant will be more likely to suffer from dryness during hotter months rather than during the cool season. Hanging baskets and small container plants are at risk of drying and dying in the Summer heat, they may need repotting or moving to a more protected area, when you pot them be sure to add water crystals to the potting mix, the crystals swell up absorbing and holding water to become jelly like granules. Planting tips: Do some research before you buy your plants, it may take a little time but it‟s worth it in the end. Select plants that grow in the area that

you live, just look at your neighbours garden and nearby friends or just go for a walk and you will be sure to get some ideas

Make sure you know the mature size of the plant you choose, especially trees

If you‟re starting a new garden, plant reliable hardy plants to give the main framework of your garden, screening plants and shade trees.

Mulching or installing an irrigation system can overcome the problem of dryness over Summer. Next week: Next week I‟ll be talking about how you can grow juicy, fresh tomatoes.

MERRIWA RINGER PHOTO COMPETITION

Last month‟s photo competition was won with a great lightning strike photo by Elizabeth Titulaer. Elizabeth won a gift voucher from Stay „n‟ Play Hay. This month‟s theme is “On the Road” and is sponsored by Merriwa Pharmacy who are donating $50 gift voucher. This theme is open to interpretation and we are on the lookout for creative entries with good technique. When submitting photos please consider the proportions of your entry. Remember it has to look good on the cover, so if its an long, narrow panorama or if it is pixelated at A4 size, we probably wont be able to use it!

We are also looking for technique. A few things we consider when judging are: Is it sharp? Is your photo completely in focus,

with clear, sharp details on the subject? How‟s the colour? Consider if your coloured

photos are vibrant and eye catching Is it pleasing to the eye? There are many

“rules” about composition. We believe rules are made to be broken. However, using lines that draw your eye through a photo is very effective, as is the rule of thirds, (splitting your photo into thirds and making sure your main subject sits on one of these lines)

Is it relevant to the theme? If your entry leaves us pondering “How is that connected to the theme” it‟s probably not going to win, regardless of the quality of the photo

Is it appropriate? Is the photo you are submitting appropriate to be published on the cover of the Ringer?

Do you have permission? People often submit photos of themselves or others in embarrassing situations, this is perfectly fine, and we enjoy a good giggle, just make sure that if the person in the photo isn‟t you, that you have their permission to submit the photo.

MERRIWA HOME HARDWARE Welcome back loyal readers for a bit more dribble. Fair bit to jibber about this week so let‟s get into it. Christmas is fast approaching, so with that comes Christmas catalogues. Our Merriwa Home Hardware Christmas catalogue is out and about at the moment, all going well you will have received one in your copy of the Hunter Valley News on Wednesday. If not, just come into the store and grab a copy. Dead set, it‟s packed with heaps of great ideas at bargain prices and I reckon there should be something for just about everyone. You know, if you can‟t think of a gift for that special person, consider a gift card. A gift card could become a tree, or a drill, a pair of jeans or even a barbeque, a gift card could ultimately be just about anything. Just to be boring, I‟m going to remind you of some of the stuff (yes that‟s the technical term) that I‟ve told you about over the last few weeks. Have you started putting up your Christmas lights yet? Get a wriggle on! Merriwa Home Hardware is sponsoring a Christmas Lights competition this year in which the winner will receive a gift voucher worth $200.00 to be spent in store at Merriwa Hardware or McConnell's This ‟n‟ That. Light displays must be nominated to be eligible for judging and nomination forms are available in store. Remember, it‟s not the amount of lights, it‟s the quality of the display. Checked out our range of colourbond garden beds? These fantastic garden beds come in a range of lengths, widths, heights, colours and shapes. Come in and have a look at the samples we have in our great garden centre.

We have a new range of kitchens available to order. Check out the Profile Kitchens catalogue. Design your own kitchen layout and select the door style that will reflect your personality. Have a look at our flooring samples at the end of the power tools. We have three samples to look at with all three available in three colours. Easy to purchase, easy to install. Rejuvenate a room or the whole house from just $15.83 m2. Wattyl Paints have a couple of promotions running at the moment, ask more about them in store, but only if you would like the chance to win $25,000.00. You may have seen the Wattyl ad‟s on the idiot box, maybe even seen an ad for our kitchens (thank you Masters), an ad for the Dual Saw which is very, very similar to our Contra Saw, and possibly even seen an ad for the Worx Handy Cut saw or the Worx Fully Loaded screwdriver. All of these products are available from Merriwa Home Hardware. Just a quick tip before I finish. With the weather warming up at the moment, a great way to protect your plants and to save water is by using mulch. Mulch helps prevent moisture loss and helps in weed control. Your plants will thank you. That‟s it for this week. Did you know? If NASA sent birds into space they would soon die, they need gravity to swallow. I‟ll just slip this one in. Happy 18th Birthday Jade!

POINTS TO PONDER FROM THE PADDOCK

The Coal Seam Gas companies say they‟ll fix any water disasters they might create. That‟ll probably be impossible, and anyway, the companies themselves might have evaporated by then.

What about all those pre-election commitments about Coal Seam Gas?

All hot air darl‟.

OPERATIONS CHRISTMAS CHILD SAMARITAN’S PURSE

Thank you to the wonderful people of Merriwa for your generosity and enthusiasm in the preparation of the Christmas boxes. Thank you also the to the children of Merriwa Central and St Joseph‟s Primary for your contributions towards this wonderful venture.

Our town of Merriwa had to be applauded, as this year we exceeded our target and prepared 104 boxes. What a great effort for a small country town. Congratulations!

This year Operation Christmas Child expects to send gift filled boxes to more than 320,00o disadvantaged children in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Fiji and Papua New Guinea. These shoe boxes have been collected from Australia and New Zealand only.

This is without a doubt one of the largest single outpourings of love and compassion that Samaritan‟s Purse has ever seen. It is so appropriate for this to happen at Christmas because, for each child, their shoe box is a demonstration of God‟s unconditional love.

Thank you to those who contributed to freight costs and donated gifts for the boxes, as any contribution is gratefully received. These acts of kindness help put a smile on the face of thousands of disadvantaged children and let them have the most amazing Christmas ever.

May your Christmas blessings be full of love and joy. May peace be with you and your families this Christmas and throughout 2013.

WOW, ONLY 26 DAYS LEFT UNTIL SANTA ARRIVES

Hey kids don't forget that Santa will be making a guest appearance at the Business Community Christmas Party next Thursday 6 December. The party will kick off around 4.30pm and will finish around 7.30pm. There will be lots to do for the kids such as Face Painting and Carol Singing and for Mums and Dads the shops will be open until late so what a great chance to do that spot of Christmas Shopping that you just haven't found time to do yet. While we will be opened until 7.30pm on the night of the Christmas Party we will also be extending our trading hours leading up to the big day. Starting from the Monday 17 December we will be opened until 7pm each day until Christmas. We hope that these extended hours will allow those people who finish work at 5.30pm, time to shop at their leisure and not feel the need to rush. I mentioned last week about the popularity of some Schleich items leading up to Christmas. We currently have an order started, however we are finding that some items have been so popular that we already have a few items on back order with the company. The latest of these backorders should arrive in store by Monday 17 December, however most of these will be filling orders that we already have, we have some spares at the moment. However, if you require on of these items please let us know ASAP so that you do not miss out. We will also be closing all orders for other Schleich items on 17 December, so please check your child's list know before it is to late. Our gift registry is proving invaluable when it comes to the Schleich range, as we can mark off the child's card the items that have already been

purchased. Which should prevent double ups of the same item. Our gift registry is also proving very popular with adults, with quite a few orders for our pearl jewellery range. So guys do the right thing and check with staff before purchasing that special gift, we would hate for you to be in the dog house this Christmas. Stock for our gift hampers are going quickly so to avoid disappointment give us your list now. Don't stress about where you will put them until Christmas as we can hold them for you up until Christmas Eve, we just need you to put orders in soon to make sure that we will have enough stock - we would hate for anyone to miss out. Before I go today I would just like to say Happy Birthday to my daughter Jade who turned 18 on Monday 26 November.

Metsulfuron-methyl, Tordon, Glyphosate and Grazon Extra are available here at Elders. The following information is from a publication (primefacts www.dpi.nsw.gov.au) by the NSW Department of Primary Industries on the weed.

Impact - Blackberry grows vigorously and can infest large areas quickly. Negative impacts include: Reduced available grazing land (most

livestock find blackberry unpalatable) and restricted livestock access to water (when growing densely around waterbodies)

Reduced productivity of land caused by shading out of pastures and crops, and competition for soil moisture and nutrients

Problems in forestry such as the prevention of regeneration of hardwood forests and reduced capacity of plantation softwood and hardwood seedlings to establish and grow. Thickets of blackberry also hinder access for forest operations

Degradation of natural environments by displacing native plants and reducing habitat for native animals

Devaluation of visual and recreational aspects of public land, parks and reserves

Provision of harbour for vermin such as rabbits and foxes, and seasonal food for exotic animals such as starlings, blackbirds and foxes. These pest species also disperse blackberry seed, acting as vectors that spread blackberry infestations

Increased fire hazard caused by dead blackberry material and obstruction of access to fire trails and water for controlling fires.

Herbicides are the most reliable method for achieving local eradication of blackberry. For best results they should be used in combination with other control methods. A number of herbicides are registered for use on blackberry, each with advantages and disadvantages. See the Noxious & Environmental Weed Control Handbook for a complete list of herbicides registered for blackberry control in NSW. Consider the following when selecting a herbicide for blackberry control: Proximity of the site to water – this

affects the choice of registered herbicides Selectivity of the herbicide – it is usually

best to retain desirable vegetation and groundcover where possible

Cost of herbicides - at their highest application rates, the relative costs of the afore-mentioned herbicides from lowest to highest is: metsulfuron-methyl; triclopyr; picloram; glyphosate; picloram + triclopyr

Level of control - experience has shown that a mixture of triclopyr + picloram used with or without aminopyralid will give the greatest long-term control

Application costs – for large infestations the cost of treatment is often underestimated. The costs of retreatment also need to be considered.

Success of any herbicide application will depend on seasonal timing of application, condition of the plant being treated ie moisture stress or disease, weather conditions, age of plant, pre control activities, the quality of water used to mix the herbicide.

Physical control - Physical control alone is rarely successful because of the root structure of blackberry. These techniques are best used in combination with herbicides. The various methods of physical control are: Hand removal of top growth and digging

up of roots - this method may be suitable for small and isolated infestations. Combining hand removal with cut stump herbicide application gives better results

Mechanical grubbing and scalping - this method can be successful if the hoe or root rake completely removes the plant, including all roots

Cultivation of the ground - because blackberry can reproduce vegetatively as well as sucker, cultivation can simply spread blackberry. However this method may be suitable if it is carried out frequently enough

Using earthmoving equipment or slashing - this method is unlikely to remove root material and may even promote growth but can be useful to gain initial access to heavy infestations for further treatments.

Our December meeting will be on December 10 at 9am and then we will be travelling to the „Plough Inn‟ at Cassilis for our annual Christmas party. The cost is $25, booking with payment to Jean Price by 5 December. Jean is handling the money and the confirmation of numbers so it is important that she is notified of your attendance. She can be contacted through „Caroline‟s‟ or on 6548 2456. This year instead of Secret Santa we will be giving donations to „material aid‟ which supports women in the South Pacific in home based businesses. Susie Fitzpatrick, Branch International Officer, has noted that they are particularly in need of cotton material large enough to make a garment, cutting scissors and safety pins. If any community members would like to contribute please contact Susie Fitzpatrick.

If you have any old reading glasses or magnifiers please give them to any of our members as they will be sent to countries where reading glasses are in short supply, our wastes can give another person the gift of easier reading. (Please note this is a different collection to others in town which are for another worthy organisation).

AIR POLLUTION READINGS ARE UP

The Merriwa air quality monitor operated by the Office of Environment and Heritage near Merriwa has shown a concerning reading for last Sunday. At 6pm on Sunday (November 25) Merriwa Healthy Environment Group members found the reading was 109.7 micrograms per cubic metre of PM10 particles. This reading is officially rated as “hazardous” – very dangerous to your health. At 7pm on the same day the reading had dropped to 89.4 mcg/cubic metre) – this rating is “very poor” – in other words, bad for your health. At 10pm the reading was down to 53.3 mcg/cubic metre – it was now rated as “good”. Breathe away. PM10 are the larger particles of air pollution, the monitor does not specifically record smaller ones.

It must be pointed out that, at this time of year with the harvest well underway, some of the dust could be coming from harvesting as well as from mining activity. We will continue to report significant dust readings.

Also we wish those involved in the harvest the very best.

VETERINARY NEWS WITH ANTHEA Parvo is here in the Merriwa district and can kill your dogs. A reminder; it stays in the ground for up to 10 years; so please help protect your mate. Make an appointment to get those vaccinations up to date. Prevention is far better than cure. Working dogs on remote properties are not exempt, so call us to stop Parvo in it‟s tracks. Cat Breeding Season - With the way the year is flying by us all, we here at the surgery just want to remind all cat owners that the breeding season is getting closer which results in an exceptional number of unwanted kittens. Just remember that kittens are all cute & cuddly until they also grow up & this is when you need to take responsibility & have them de-sexed so that you can enjoy them a lot longer knowing that they are not out & about breeding more unwanted kittens.

Puppy Pre-School had another successful class with everyone passing on the final night. We will

run another course next year around March/ April. We will give more details closer to time. “What‟s in the Jar” was won by Bronwyn Cornish with the correct guess of “Rabbit Testicles”. Fleas, Fleas, Fleas, Fleas! I can guarantee that they are driving not only your beloved pet mad but also yourself. If this is happening call in and see us in regards to prevention and control solutions before it gets worse. You may not see a flea but your mate could be allergic and there is nothing worse than scratching like mad and ripping yourself to shreds. HEADS I open my eyes. Warm, bright sunshine filters through the window. Well, that‟s a better start than yesterday! I swing out of my warm and cosy bed, open the door of the motel, look right….glorious sunshine shining onto a serene beach. I look left…..snow covered mountain peaking from a shroud of fluffy, white clouds. Contrast is an understatement!

Breakfast eaten, car packed we decide to head to Mt Wellington to check out the view and play in the snow. We wind up through the foothills and stop at a crowded lookout to take in a view of Hobart and the Derwent River. Alli grabs a handful of snow, and the first of the days snow fights has begun. Once we are thoroughly cold, we pile into the car and continue up the mountain. Before much longer we come across a boom gate and a sign announcing that the road to the summit is closed. We pull over and start the second snow fight of the day. After about half an hour Alli starts to cry, her hands are cold. We pile into the car, putting snow everywhere, much to Dad‟s disgust, head down the mountain and towards the Cadbury

Chocolate factory. When we arrive at chocolate heaven, another sign announces that the factory is closed for the day. The news leaves this little chocoholic devastated. Now what to do today? We consult the map and decide to push West to Strahan. The drive will take most of the day. The countryside is green, rolling mountains with snowy peaks in the distance. We follow the Dewent River and slowly wind our way up into the central highlands area. The snow gets deeper as we go. By the time we reach Derwent Bridge it is several inches thick. We stop at a roadside rest area, wipe the snow off a few rocks and have a picnic lunch. The weather is surprisingly mild up here, sun reflecting off snow and very little wind.

We continue on through the snowy peaks, stopping to take in the Tullelah Hydro-Electric Plant. From here we slowly get lower. Winding down into the bare, Luna landscape that surrounds Queenstown. Formerly the world‟s richest mining town, it is now a smallish village surrounded by denuded and scarred mountains.

Strahan is only a 40 minute drive further on. We do a quick lap around the town before heading out to Macquarie Heads campsite. We wind through the state forest and eventual find the caretaker, a chatty old guy, who gives us his opinion on several topics, from politics to the weather, before informing us that it costs

$6 to camp and advising the best places to park. We pull into a lush campsite between the tree ferns and set up camp for the night. Before camp is erected a light drizzle sets in. We hurry to finish putting up our tents, cook a rushed dinner on a smoky fire and start contemplating bed. Alli asks for bed, I wander to the tent to tuck her in, there is water everywhere. The tent has leaked, and in a major fashion. I salvage what dry bedding I can and we shift into my parent‟s tent. Four people in a 2 man tent, it‟s going to be cosy. Strange noises start coming from the surrounding forest. I shine the torch about but can‟t see anything. From the squeals and chattering sounds I surmise that it is a Tassie Devil. It is certainly not like anything I have ever encountered on the mainland.

We all retire to the dry warmth of the one non-leaky tent and attempt to sleep, rain falling on the roof. I hear noises outside, it is still dark and raining, I peak out of the tent to investigate. A small, dark and furry creature is right beside the tent. I can‟t make out what it is, but it looks like a small roo, down on all fours. Then I spot movement beside the car, it‟s another of the weird southern critters. As my eyes adjust I see the campground has several more, grazing on the lush grass. Back in bed, I ponder what they might be, I settle on Pademelons, a small native wallaby, then mind at rest, drift back to sleep.

BIG SALE, EVERYTHING MUST GO Don‟t miss the big Trinity Markets sale on at the moment Your favourite op shop has massive discounts across the board, to make way for new stock. Ladie‟s dresses, jeans, tops, suits; men‟s pants, jeans, shirts & T-shirts; teen‟s tops, pants, skirts for every occasion; childrens and babies‟ wear – whatever clothing you‟re looking for, it‟s more than likely in our sale. Obviously the prices can‟t stay down forever, so why not call in to Trinity Markets (between the Tourist Welcoming Centre and the RSL Club) and see what bargains you can find? Opening hours are Tuesdays to Friday 9.00am to 12.30pm, and Saturdays 9.00am to 12.00 noon. As we have been stating on a number of occasions, the clothing bin that used to be located near the Parish Hall is no longer in use! Unfortunately some people are still leaving donations there and this is causing a problem for our hard-working volunteers, who have to decide what to do with the articles.

If you have clean, saleable goods that you want to donate, please bring them into the shop during opening hours and we will be very pleased to receive them. The Trinity Markets Christmas party held recently at the Anglican Parish Hall was very well attended. Many thanks went to the organisers and the Anglican Women‟s Guild who turned on a fantastic meal. We don‟t want to name names because someone may be left out, but you all know who you are and your work in the kitchen made our day. The little bell-shaped Christmas puddings from Olive were delicious, presents were great, everyone partied on for several hours and what a fabulous group of volunteers we have – you deserve the best! That‟s all for now – don‟t forget to call in and check out our sale. “Dress for Less” at Trinity Markets.

WOOLBROOK RURAL INDUSTRIES

British trucks were very popular in Australia until the 1960‟s after which a general decline in the quality of British products occurred, including Leyland taking over and wrecking much of the British car and truck industry, the Leyland P76 being the ultimate Australian example. The abolition of our Ton Mile Tax saw a rapid growth in both the interstate and intrastate transport industry resulting in trucks running up much bigger mileages more rapidly than in the past and often under much harsher conditions. Truck buyers began to realise that it was often better in the long run to spend more on American or European trucks and get superior quality, reliability and economy. Locally, Keith Kelman was a good example, starting his trucking business in 1949 with two Leyland Comets and eventually graduating to Mercedes which in those days were long bonneted old fashioned predecessors to the legendary 1418. There were also new trucking duties and niches emerging, and one that I recall, and which seems to have since disappeared, was filled by paper trucks which delivered newspapers over much of NSW overnight. They were mostly Dodge table tops with V8 petrol engines and probably high ratio differentials, and they travelled at great speed. Another type, also now apparently long disappeared, was the plain dark grey Kwikasair Kenworth overnight shuttle trucks, rigid six wheeled pantechnicons without signage or identification of any kind. They carried parcels and light freight and (for example) left Burroughs Road Alexandria by 6pm and were scheduled to be in Brisbane or Melbourne unloading by 6am next morning. That is, they really were “quick as air”, the cargo was charged at air freight rates, and the consignors were probably unaware they were paying air

rates for road transport. They had Cummins 350s or GM-Detroit-8V71s (I forget which) of about 350 HP, big engines for their day, and their drivers were the cream of the industry. You often saw them on the Putty Road which was mostly rough gravel at the time, they travelled very fast, apparently with few if any accidents, and it was impossible to outrun them, that is if you were fool enough to try. They were fitted with Michelin tyres (also uncommon on trucks at the time) and transport lore told of a time when Kwikasair complained to the Michelin manufacturers that they were having much trouble with these tyres. Michelin contended that they were used without problems all over the world including the roughest possible roads in Africa and Asia and that Kwikasair‟s complaints must be unfounded. Eventually the French manufacturers sent a man out from France to investigate the problem and demonstrate that Michelin tyres would stand up to anything that Australia could possibly throw at them. The man from Michelin wanted to go for a run in a Kwikasair truck, so they put him into one of their so-called “Grey Ghosts” with their best driver behind the wheel and instructions that he break all records on the Putty Road to Singleton. The story was that the driver excelled himself, the petrified Frenchman demanded to be let out of the truck at the first place which appeared to display any sign of habitation (Bulga), and was in a state such that he had to be lifted out of the truck by the driver as best he could. Knowing the schedule to which these trucks had to adhere (inner Sydney to inner Brisbane in 12 hours maximum under almost any conditions and on the disastrous roads of the 1960s), the story could be true!! Then an impoverished Britain decided her salvation lay in joining the E.U., which

necessitated not only abandoning her colonies in favour of Europe in all matters including trade, but also relegating their citizens to virtual foreign status. Thus it became easy for Europeans to travel to and within Britain, but Australians and others were to all intents and purposes treated as foreigners. Not unreasonably, the old colonies then abolished British trade and other preferences and advantages and treated her like any other foreign country. The Colonies suffered criticism in Britain for their actions, however I thought the situation was well summed up by a member of the House of Lords, whose name I cannot recall, and who said as near as I remember: “Let us not criticise the colonies for abandoning us. Remember, we first abandoned them”. It was a serious blow to many Australians, including dairy farmers who suffered the first of three post war disasters, the second being deregulation some years ago and the third the recent milk price wars between Coles and Woolworths. However, Australia eventually found other avenues for her exports but many things changed, for instance Jersey and Guernsey dairy cows were mostly replaced by Friesians to supply a different market. In 1970 my involvement with trucks had changed from

owning and driving to selling them, and by then the market for British trucks had begun to disappear in favour of those from Europe, America and Japan. Later I will tell you how, through sheer laziness and incompetence, Britain also lost forever her seemingly unshakeable grip on the supply of buses for the huge Sydney and Newcastle bus fleets. Since then I have often wondered whether, on balance, Britain‟s entry to the E.U. was really to her advantage, and concluded that she would probably have been better off if she had, as a more viable and lasting alternative, simply got her act together again.

ADDING SOME MORE SLOP TO THE SLIP AND SLAP

Despite strange weather patterns around Australia, the calendar tells us Summer is arriving soon. So it‟s about now that, on a personal level, greater areas of skin get displayed. Whilst this is an understandable response to high temperature and high humidity, there are some common sense precautions we need to take. Research undertaken by the Cancer Council and the Australian Department of Health and Ageing shows that it‟s not just the day, or even several days, at the beach that causes the most sun damage to our skin. The many days spent involved with everyday activities, without adequate protection from the sun, might be even more dangerous. And with most states in Australia now “saving daylight”, there is the possibility we will have more usable leisure time in the sunshine. The “Slip, Slop, Slap” campaign was launched by the Cancer Council Australia more than 30 years ago and has proved to be one of the most successful public health campaigns. The message since then has been slightly modified to incorporate the words “Seek” and “Slide” into the call to action. That is, not only slip on a

hat, slop on some sunscreen and slap on a hat, but also seek some shade and slide on some sunglasses. With regard to sunscreens it‟s well recognised that they are identified according to the level of protection from sunburn they provide; and this is promoted on labels by way of the Sun Protection Factor or so-called SPF rating. Until recently the maximum SPF rating permitted to be advertised in Australia was 30+, but now the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has authorised the display of an SPF rating of up to 50+. For most Australians, definitely all of us who have inherited the northern European or Anglo/Celtic skin type, a 50+ product should be the sunscreen of choice. One of the advantages of the newly labelled sunscreens is that there is greater certainty that they are truly “broad spectrum”. That is they protect against both UVB and UVA wavelengths of sunlight. The old rating was only indicative of protection from the burning UVB rays, however the deeply penetrating UVA rays are equally likely to cause cancer. All this doesn‟t mean you have to throw away your present 30+ sunscreen. Many 30+ brands already give at least 50+ protection, and are also broad spectrum. Check with your pharmacist to confirm which products are suitable for you. If you really want your skin to look darker, using a solarium should not be an option. It‟s quite clear now that solarium tans are not safe tans. As well as causing immediate skin and

eye damage, the UV radiation from solariums can markedly increase your risk of skin cancer. Whatever they are called – solariums, tanning beds, sun-beds or sunlamps – these artificial generators of UV rays are just man-made cancer factories. Solariums are sometimes advertised as a way to “pre-tan” in anticipation of the hotter weather to come, and so protect your skin from the sun. In fact, tanning without burning can still cause skin damage, premature skin ageing and skin cancer. If you must have a tan, a fake tan is the best option. FAMILY FUN ON THE MUNMURRA YIELDS EXCELLENT WATER QUALITY RESULTS

In October the Upper Hunter Shire Council and Hunter-Central Rivers Catchment Management Authority (CMA) held a „Family Fun on the Munmurra‟ event for Cassilis residents and the surrounding community to discover more about their local river. Under the guidance of Waterwatch Catchment Officer, Ingrid Berthold, participants tested water quality and completed a water bug survey to assess the health of the Munmurra River. “On the day the results from pH, electrical conductivity and turbidity tests were excellent. Most surprisingly the water bug survey revealed an incredible selection of the highly sensitive stonefly nymph. We found sixty plus in total” said Miss Berthold. Water bugs (aquatic macroinvertebrates) are an indicator of waterway health. From bug survey results a Stream Pollution Index can be calculated giving a rating of zero (extremely poor) to six (excellent). “With such a high abundance of sensitive water bugs such as stonefly nymphs, mayfly nymphs, caddisfly larvae, riffle beetles, dragonfly nymphs, it was not surprising that the Stream Pollution Index rating was an excellent 6.14.” “This of course is just one snap-shot at one location on one day.” “Following good land management practices to maintain healthy soils, encouraging the growth of native riparian vegetation and reducing stock access to the river will help to keep the Munmurra healthy into the future.”

Two local families who attended the day signed up to the Hunter Region‟s Waterwatch Network to continue to monitor the river‟s health into the future. Ray Phelps from the Upper Hunter Shire Council and Linda Russell from the CMA‟s Muswellbrook Office were there to answer any questions from local residents relating to land and wastewater management in the catchment. For more information on the Waterwatch program or wastewater and sustainable land management practices please contact the CMA on 02 4930 1030 or email [email protected]

ST DAVID’S UNITING CHURCH Some folk may remember John and Hazel Allison, who taught at Merriwa Central School in the early 1970‟s. John taught Science and Hazel taught Home Economics. Hazel also taught Sunday School and John worked with Ron at the Youth Club. They retired from teaching and have been working in a mission in India for the past few years. John and Hazel will be renewing friendships and speaking of their work in India at St David‟s service at 6pm on Sunday 2 December. A fellowship tea will follow. We would welcome anyone to come along and hear of the work and join in the fellowship on Sunday evening.

programmable CD stereo with LCD display, input for MP3 players, headphone jack, carry handle and will work off mains or batteries. Great buying. Bring those parcel cards in please! It‟s that time of the year that we all love – especially if you work in the postal service! We get about five times as many parcels during the Christmas period – and nowhere new to stock „em! You can help us (and yourself) find your parcel or package quicker by not forgetting to bring in the red/white collection card. This card tells us what type of parcel you have and hence where it is stored. No card and we hold you (& those behind you) up longer looking for it. If we are busy and you don‟t have a card you may be asked to wait until the queue is gone. It also helps at this time of the year if you do not ring us looking for a parcel that may not have arrived yet. So please, remember to bring in those red/white collection cards when picking up a parcel - & please pick up your parcel promptly – we need the space. Car Phone Mount The Cygnett Dashview universal mount attaches to windscreen or dash with its high grip suction cup. It will hold a mobile phone, MP3 player or small GPS and will tilt and swivel to best angle. Stays put in all temperatures and its expandable grip will hold up to 80mm x 55mm. A steal at only $19.95. E-Readers in stock Smart people know about the brain food and the pleasure that a good read can bring. Paper

books provide that but electronic books are being discovered for the convenience of having all reading matter in one small package that they can take anywhere. Many electronic book titles are free or very cheap and the Reader prices have come down quite a bit. We have two E-Readers in stock – the Laser EB850 at $89.95 and the LeVision at $69.95. They are both TFT colour 7 inch screens with Li-Po batteries giving around 7 hours reading time. This is less time than the more expensive e-ink readers but you have the advantage of colour and being able to also play videos, show photo‟s and even play music while you read if you want. Both have SD card expansion slots, and come with earphones and USB cable. The Laser is also ultra slim and plays radio. If you have managed to resist changing from paper books so far then it‟s now worth taking a look at the new electronic readers. Shuffle music player only $19.95. This is a terrific buy for anyone wanting to listen to their favourite music in a tiny package. In green, purple or silver the Pico Life, MP3 player with shuffle looks a lot like a popular American fruity brand but for a lot less at only $19.95. Includes headphones, 2GB of memory, USB cord and are very easy to use. Great for listening whilst jogging, doing homework – anything! Emails just aren‟t Christmas! This year it has been reported that there is a slight swing back to personal card & letter writing by mail. Emails are quick and convenient but like much of our society they are disposable and can soon be forgotten. This is especially true at Christmas. You wouldn‟t hang emails around the house or on the Christmas tree

would you? On the other hand Christmas cards carry a personal message that you can be proud of and display accordingly. And because of that cards are expected to be more popular than ever this Christmas. So, if you are sending nice messages to friends or relatives it will cost you a measly 55c for the stamp (same as last year) or $1.60 for overseas cards. Do something slow for a change!
