At the beginning of the event, we had 3 alumni speakers sharingwith us on “To Be a Chartered Engineer”. They were Jasper Yip(’97 graduate), Harry Lee (’99 graduate) and Jacky Fung (’99graduate). They shared about the job application experience, thereasons why they are interested in the field and the good pointsof being chartered engineers.

While we enjoyed the meal, alumni and students had theopportunities getting to know each other. Students were eager toask about career development related questions. Alumni also hadfun knowing more about the present university life of the students.

All had a wonderful evening. Our alumni enjoyed meeting our“old” friends, faculty members and our younger brothers andsisters. Lastly, we all wish Jacky Fung good luck as he will continuehis chemical engineering career in Australia.

Somehow I've been affiliated on and offwith UST after my graduation in 2000.Having worked as a research assistant inthe Division of Humanities, executiveofficer in the School of Engineering, andobtained my master's degree in ChinaStudies, I came back last year with anexciting assignment, which is to assist inthe development of the newly establishedInstitute for Advanced Studies (IAS).

2000/2006Linus See, BBA (IS), MA (CHIN)

As one of the major initiatives in UST'sStrategic Plan 2005-2020, IAS aims atattracting stellar scholars to Hong Kongin building Asia's hub of academicresearch. Besides the talk-of-the-townvisit of Prof Stephen Hawking in June2006, we also invite top-notch experts invarious fields of science and technologyto give guest lectures and participate inconferences and panel discussions, including Nobel Laureates AaronCiechanover (Chemistry 2004), Klausvon Klitzing (Physics 1985), John Polanyi(Chemistry 1986) etc. During their visits,I have the opportunity of sharing ourviews on research, science and life ingeneral. It turns out these ‘crackerjacks’are much more down-to-earth than Iexpected and not like trapped in the ivorytower. They are in pursuit of certainideals, panoramic rather than pedantic, which are for the betterment of thesociety and mankind.

It is my great honor to be inspired bythese sages and involved in the IASproject. Do keep in touch and join us forour forthcoming programs! For alumniwho are busy and not available to beinspired in person, you can go to ourwebpage http://ias.ust.hk for webcasts ofour events.

capital of the Kingdom of Bahrain, I hadlittle knowledge about this country. I’mrather knowledgeable about why I washeading for this place. I was attendingthe Global ICT Summit-Future ITConference and Exhibition as one of themembers of the Hong Kong delegationwhich includes …IT professionals.I pres ided on the panel named“E-enterprise: Emerging Technologies”.Five days of conference provided anunique opportunity for exchanging thev i s ions and in s i gh t s o f the ITprofessionals from all over the world.Though business trip is always on a tightschedule, I endeavored to immersemyself into the local culture since it isalways fascinating to explore the cultureof a strange place and a kingdom afar.As an archipelago of 33 islands, theKingdom of Bahrain, renowned as “thepearl of the Persian Gulf” is one of therichest and developed countries in theArabian Gulf offering a blend of ancientand modern. Skyscrapers share thelandscape with majestic mosques, embodiments of Islamic art, culture andarchitecture. The country, as many otherArabian countries, is abundant in oilproduction. The oil is cheap as the waterhere. So it is not exaggerate to name it asthe “drivers’ paradise” : Cheap oil, well-planned roads, and clean city. Thegovernment’s determined passion fordeveloping Barhain as the financial andinformation center in the Arabian Gulfinvites financial investors and ITenterprises from the world. With 387financial institutions serving only 700thousand population, this mergingmarket is really exciting. Weekends inBahrain are Thursday afternoon andFriday. The navy workdays are Sunday-Thursday. Average temperature fromMay-September is in the 80 F. Averagetemperature from December-February is64 F. However, air-conditioning is well-equipped in all buildings. Seven days tripto the Kingdom of Bahrain, an uniqueexperience for me is the proof of mymotto: “we travel to see the world andwe never see more than when we're inthe culture”

Studying in HKUST empowers myknowledge and helps a lot in my businessdevelopment. I formed CrossoverInternational, a business and ITconsultancy firm since 2002. One of theexciting experiences is my last Bahrain(Middle-East) trip.
