DIRECTOR'S DESK DIGNITARIESWe are happy to bring out the new edition of Radiance showcasing the activities of the Institute of

Pharmacy, Nirma University. We have organized 3rd National Conference of Institute of Pharmacy which

was attended by more than 200 participates from different parts of the country and presented paper. We

have invited Dr. Sunil Jambekar from LECOM, Bradenton, School of Pharmacy, FL, USA and Dr. Marco

Lolli, University of Turin, Turino, Italy to teach courses in B Pharm and M Pharm. We have also organized

two public Lecture during the period and it is worth to mention that Dr. Sanjib Battacharya, Southwest

University, Chongquing, China delivered the lecture. This issue also contains the details of the ongoing M

Pharm project of our students. I congratulate all the students and faculty members for their

achievements for the success of Institute.

It is indeed a pleasure to bring out the second issue of the Twelfth volume of ‘Radiance’. Institute of

Pharmacy always attempt to give the best research environment to students by organizing various

lecture series. Two such lecture series were organised which offered, research scholars, a remarkable

opportunity for one to one interaction with experts. This issue also gives a glimpse of several events

organized by the institute as well as the achievements of faculty members, staff members, and students. I

am thankful to all the members of the editorial board for contributing positively to give the present

shape to this issue.

Prof Sunil S Jambhekar from LECOM-Bradenton, School of Pharmacy,

FL, USA visited Institute of Pharmacy, Nirma University during February

11-15, 2019. He delivered a series of lectures on Biopharmaceutics and

pharmacokinetics, nonlinear kinetics, modified release dosage form and

many others to B. Pharm., M. Pharm, and Ph. D. students. He covered the

fundamental and applied aspects of biopharmaceutics and

pharmacokinetics. The research scholars were given case studies and

problems for solving. He guided the students for in vitro-in vivo

correlation and Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics related

exercise. He also discussed the research project related problems of M.

Pharm. and Ph. D. students. He also guided students for Indo - US

exchange program for the internship, post-doctoral fellowship

opportunities and Full Bright fellowship schemes of USA. The lecture

series also comprises of a brainstorming session with faculties for

research and teaching policy, advancement in teaching and trends in the

US education system was also organized. This lecture series was an

excellent interactive learning experience for all.

Prof. Marco Lolli, Aggregate Professor in Medicinal Chemistry at

University of Turin, Torino, Italy and CEO, Beenext s.r.l. visited Institute of

Pharmacy, Nirma University from February 25 to March 4, 2019. As a

Visiting Professor, Prof. Lolli delivered a series of lectures on Scaffold

hopping in drug discovery targeting hDHODH to B. Pharm, M. Pharm,

and Ph. D. students. He covered systematic approaches to drug design

and synthesis. The case studies and problem-solving were also given to

the M. Pharm and Ph.D. students. Prof. Lolli also interacted personally

with M. Pharm and Ph.D. students and did brainstorming for their research related problems. He delivered lectures on Innovative

Teaching methodologies to Faculty members and Ph. D. students. Prof. Lolli also delivered a Public Lecture on "Malaria: An Historical

Perspective". Visit of Prof. Lolli was a good interactive learning experience for Faculty members as well as for students. Visit of Prof. Lolli

Anti-Ragging Poster Competition

The 15th Foundation Day of Institute of Pharmacy, Nirma

University was celebrated with full zeal and enthusiasm by

the students, faculty and staff members. Dr. J S Yadav, J C

Bose Fellow, Director & Trustee, Indrasheel University,

Mehsana and former Director IICT, Hyderabad & CSIR

Bhatnagar Fellow was the Chief Guest, and Dr. Anup Singh,

Director General, Nirma University was the President of the

Inaugural function. Prof Manjunath Ghate, Director, Institute

of Pharmacy presented the annual report of the Institute

highlighting the significant accomplishments of the Institute.

On this auspicious day, gold medals were given to the

meritorious students of B. Pharm. as well as the students,

faculty, staff, and alumni were felicitated for their

outstanding achievements.

Institute of Pharmacy, Nirma University organized the anti-

ragging poster competition on October 19, 2018. About 80

students have participated enthusiastically during the event.

Prof Parag Mistry and Prof Jitesh Mewada from Institute of

Architect, Nirma University evaluated the posters and

felicitated the winners after the occasion.

This industrial visit was a part of Institute elective ‘Course on

Wheels-Application of Pharmaceutical Sciences’. Under this

course, Students of B. Pharm. Semester VII and M. Pharm.

Semester I (Regulatory Affairs) formerly visited Aculife

Healthcare on October 6, 2018. Later, students of M. Pharm.

Semester I (Pharmacology) and B. Pharm. Semester VII went

for industry visit at Preclinical Research facility of Cadila

Pharmaceuticals at Dholka on November 3, 2018. This is a

great opportunity for students for interacting with

professionals and learning about the functioning of

departments in industry.

A workshop entitled “Hands on Training for Sophisticated

Instruments" for the UG, PG and Ph.D. students of Pharmacy,

Hands on Training for Sophisticated

Instruments

Chemical Engineering, and Science background, was

organized by Dept. of Pharmaceutical Analysis, Institute of

Pharmacy on December 28, 2018 under the aegis of Centre

of Continuing Education, Nirma University. The training

programme provided a basic understanding, operation and

hands-on training of sophisticated instruments like High-

Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas

Chromatograph (GC), High-Performance Thin Layer

Chromatography (HPTLC), Fourier Transform Infrared

Spectrophotometer (FT-IR) and Spectrofluorimeter. The

workshop got an excellent response, and a total of 38

participants attended the workshop, though the maximum

limit of participants was restricted up to 30. The sessions

were conducted by Prof. Priti Mehta & Dr. Charmy Kothari,

and hands-on training was given by research scholars.

Institute of Pharmacy, Nirma University organized the 3rd

National Conference of Institute of Pharmacy, NCIP 2019 on

the theme “Integrating Natural and Modern Medicines in

Drug Discovery and Development” during January 24-25,

2019.

Dr. G. N. Singh, Secretary-cum-Scientific Director, Indian

Pharmacopoeia Commission, Ministry of Health & Family

Welfare, Govt. of India, was the Chief Guest in the Inaugural

function of the National Conference. Dr. Gopal Kundu,

Director (I/c), National Centre for Cell Science, Pune, was the

Guest of Honour. Various eminent and distinguished

scientists and academicians delivered plenary lectures at the

conference which was followed by the panel discussion.

NCIP 2019

More than 200 delegates participated actively in the

scientific poster competition and presented their innovative

ideas and valuable research work. Prof. N. R. Sheth, Vice-

Chancellor, Gujarat Technological University, Ahmedabad

and Dr. Anamik Shah, Vice-Chancellor, Gujarat Vidyapith,

Ahmedabad graced the valedictory function.

Alumni Networking Meet for Sector Pharmacology as well as

Pharmaceutical Analysis, Regulatory Affairs and quality

affairs were organized on October10 and December 30,

2018 respectively at Institute of Pharmacy, Nirma University.

It was attended by various Alumni Members working in the

area of preclinical and clinical Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical

Analysis, ADL, QA, QC and RA. IPNUAA annual alumni meet

was organized at Institute of Pharmacy, Nirma University on

January 26, 2019 with entertainment and fun activities where

the Alumni Members of Institute of Pharmacy revived their

memories.

Workshop on Scientific Writing

Clinic

Institute of Pharmacy organized a Workshop on “Scientific

Writing Clinic” during December 20-21, 2018 under the

banner of Institute quality assurance cell for faculty

members and Ph.D. students. It included lecture cum

workshop on topics related to paper writing, proposal

writing, medical writing, etc. which is beneficial in scientific

communication. Various eminent and distinguished speakers

like Dr. Anupama Ramkumar, Arkus Research Clinical

Solution, Ahmedabad; Dr. Harish Padh, Ex-Vice Chancellor,

SPU; Prof. J. P.N. Mishra, Dean, CUG, Gandhinagar; Prof.

Bhaswat Chakraborty, Emeritus Professor, IPNU; Prof

Manjunath Ghate, Director, IPNU and Prof. Sarat Dalai,

Director, ISNU delivered lectures during this scientific writing

clinic.

Workshop on "Experimental animal

models and drug evaluation

techniques"

A workshop on "Experimental animal models and drug

evaluation techniques" was conducted on February 19, 2019.

Dr. Sanjay Mandhane, Associate Vice President,

Pharmacology, Sun Pharma Advanced Research Company

Limited, served as chief guest and delivered the key note

address. Participants from different parts of Gujarat and

Rajasthan from various pharmacy institutes and industries

attended the workshop. Surgical models for stroke and

invasive method of measurement of blood pressure, heart

rate and hemodynamic parameters were demonstrated. An

insight into molecular techniques like Enzyme Linked

Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and hematoanalyzer were also

provided through demonstration.

Workshop on the "Computer Aided

Drug Design Software

Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Institute of

Pharmacy organised a workshop entitled "Computer Aided

Drug Design Software" under Center for Continuing

Education, Nirma University on February 16, 2019. The main

objective of the workshop was to provide conceptual insight

as well as demonstration of important software used for

computer aided drug design (CADD). The workshop got very

good response and total 33 participants attended the

workshop.

Drama Club Activity

NirmaQuest’19

Students’ Achievements

Students of Drama club, Institute of Pharmacy have

participated in One Act Play competition 2019 held on

February 29, 2019. Total eight teams from other institutes

have participated, and a total of 13 students have performed

on the theme 'In Pursuit of Mahatma'. Institute won 2 prizes

in the competition that are Best Production and Best

Supporting Actress (Jenny Kundadiya, B. Pharm. Semester

IV).

NirmaQuest’19, an arena of National level quiz competition

for pharmacy and other disciplines was organized by

Institute of Pharmacy, Nirma University on February 14,

2019. There was a total of 55 teams participated for both the

Quiz A (Pharmacy) and Quiz B (Other Disciplines). In Quiz A,

the team from Institute of Pharmacy Nirma University was

1st and 2nd runner up. Apurva Joshi and Aditya Taneja of B.

Pharm. semester VIII was 1st runner up and Yash Sharma

and Archana Hariprasad of B. Pharm. semester III was 2nd

runner up. In Quiz B also a team of Yash Sharma and Smit

Patel of B. Pharm. Semester VIII was 2nd runner up.

Manan Shah, Ph. D. Scholar under the guidance of Dr.

Charmy Kothri, presented the poster entitled “Drospirenone

and its association with Gallbladder Diseases : A

retrospective study of Canadian Adverse Drug Reaction

Monitoring Program,1965-2017" at the 18th Annual Meeting

of International Society of Pharmacovigilance:

Pharmacovigilance without borders held at Geneva,

Switzerland during November 11-14, 2018.

Krunal J Prajapati, Ph.D. Scholar under the guidance of Dr.

Charmy Kothri, received the senior research fellowship (SRF)

from ICMR for the project entitled "Impurity profile and

toxicity study of unknown impurities of selected anti-

asthmatic drugs" in January 2019.

Dr. Manjunath Ghate, Professor, and Director, Institute of

Pharmacy, received prestigious APTI Principal of the Year rdAward 2018. The award was conferred in 23 Annual

Convention of Association of Pharmacy Teachers of India

(APTICON) held during October 3-4, 2018 at Jaipur. Award

was bestowed his excellent track record and have taken their

institution to new heights in terms of quality education,

competent research activities and an able administration.

Dr. Priti J Mehta, Professor, and Head, Department of

Pharmaceutical Analysis, Institute of Pharmacy, received

prestigious ‘APTI women of the year Award 2018’. The award rdwas conferred in 23 Annual convention of Association of

Pharmacy Teachers of India (APTICON) held during October

3-4, 2018 at Jaipur. Award was conferred for her academic,

the first women scientist from Gujarat to receive this award.

Bristol, UK under Newton Bhabha fellowship program. Her

area of interest is colloidal drug delivery systems, stimuli

Technology (Banaras Hindu University). She has received

UGC-Junior Research Fellowship and CSIR-Senior Research

Fellowship for carrying out her Ph.D. research work. She has

worked in National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education

and Research (NIPER), Ahmedabad for two years as Assistant

Professor. She has International Publications in journals like

Pharmacological Reports, Chemico-Biological Interaction,

Stress etc. to her credit. She has attended and presented

papers at various national and international level

conferences including the one at AAPS Annual Meeting and

Exposition, New Orleans, USA and Singapore Pharmacy

Congress. She has received Best Poster award at the

conference of Recent Advances in Pharmaceutical Sciences

(RAPS). She has also attended various seminars and

workshops. Her research areas of interest are exploring
