To begin with, I would like to take this opportunity to thank each one of you for yet another year of wonderful collaboration.

2017 was an eventful year indeed wherein we overcame many challenges, celebrated many joyful moments and received accolades.

Here are some great accomplishments & moments of cheer we had in 2017:

Amadeus India & Amadeus Lanka celebrated over two decades of market leadership, innovation and an ongoing contribution to the travel and tourism industry across the Indian Subcontinent, with its key travel partners at various locations. Evenings of entertainment were organized at Delhi, Mumbai & Sri Lanka wherein the top travel partners were felicitated as a token of thanks for their continuous support and commitment to Amadeus.

Amadeus India welcomed 2101 new travel agencies into the family in 2017 and a host of new products were added to the existing range of Amadeus products and solutions.

Amadeus India was conferred with an award for ‘Most Outstanding Global Travel Distribution System’ at the Travel and Hospitality Awards held in Delhi on 14th April 2017.

India continues to achieve double digit growth in the space of domestic passenger traffic. IATA, which represents about 85% of the global airline traffic, projects India to overtake the UK to become the third largest air passenger market by 2025, wherein China will be the top market, followed by the US.

Let us all continue to work hard with diligence and determination to achieve the goals that we have set before us. Let us pledge to make 2018 a year of transformation, growth and success. As always, my team joins me to assure you of our very best cooperation and support at all times. I wish you and your families a very joyful and a healthy New Year.

Here’s to wonderful new beginnings.Happy 2018!

GST-Adverse impact on tourism?

Seldom, if ever, in the past has the tourism industry faced such challenging times as it is facing now, with the introduction of the controversial Goods and Services Tax (GST). True, in the past, service tax issues and budget provisions have irked the industry, but what the players are facing now is unprecedented.

What adds to the confusion and complexity of the situation is the fact that many, if not most, of the tour operators and other stakeholders are unaware of the ground situation as it exists and how to deal with it on a day to day basis, which is in the ultimate analysis final judgement of any policy and its implementation.

The seriousness of the problem is reflected in a memorandum given to the government by the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO).

Rajiv Mehra, IATO Vice President, who has worked a lot on the subject, says that after the implementation of GST in July 2017, tourism has been taxed highly and the average tax on tourism works out to be 28.83 per cent. This will result in loss of business for the tour operators and the loss of employment opportunities as well, as Indian tour operators are not able to compete with neighbouring countries.

Foreign tour operators will avoid selling India and will promote other destinations which are cheaper. Foreign Exchange earnings and direct and indirect employment will be hit, goes the argument. Mehra says that we have gone more expensive and countries like Sri Lanka will be the gainers. IATO has suggested that a deemed value equal to 10 per cent of the total bill amount charged by the tour operator may be fixed on the same lines as in the case of air

INDUSTRY SPEAK

travel agents under rule 32(3) of CGST Rules2017.

Another alternative that the association has suggested is that like transporters and rent-a -cab operators, limited Input Tax Credit in respect of GST charged by a tour operator may be made available to another tour operator availing services. Till there is a clear cut decision on double taxation, there will be negative effect on growth of tourism in a sustainable manner, says Pronab Sarkar, president of IATO, who has been dealing with taxation and operational matters since many years.

Rajiv Verma, of Lawrence Travel, adds a new dimension to the whole issue by pointing out that the authorities should have been properly briefed on various aspects by the travel associations. He felt that when this has been done, relief has been given. Detailed study and discussions at all levels is required, he says.

Rajendera Kumar, Director, The Ambassador Vivanta by Taj New Delhi, former president of FHRAI, gives the example of Singapore, where there is a uniform seven per cent tax for all hospitality outlets, unlike here where a distinction is sought to be created between stand-alone restaurants and those within a hotel.

Bhim Singh, Managing Director, of Jaipur-based Rajasthan Tours, has found the GST regime so complex and confusing that he has left it to be handled by the accountants.

The travel industry was expecting much from the GST regime but things have gone worse for it. Incidentally, the tourism industry contributes 5.9 per cent to the GDP and 9.2 per cent of the total employment in the country.

“Improving operations and performance across all parts of the travel sector is a key area of focus for us at Amadeus. By working together with our own teams, developers and startups, we are focused on developing new ways to relieve the tensions that exist for all of us when travelling. Situm offers a really powerful solution and we look forward to having it as part of our investment portfolio and working together to solve some of these challenges,” said Katherine Grass, head of Amadeus Innovation and Ventures”.

Situm’s indoor positioning system (IPS) applies a unique location algorithm, able to use all available sensors in smartphones collaboratively (e.g. Wi-Fi, magnetometer, Bluetooth Low Energy and user movement prediction based on inertial sensors). Global navigation satellite systems (GPS ) often don’t work indoors because the microwaves that GPS uses to identify locations are reduced and scattered by roofs, walls and other objects.

“When travelling, we often find ourselves in new places and unfamiliar surroundings, which can be daunting. By delivering a minimal-infrastructure solution, and harnessing the power of personal mobile technology, we can quickly give travellers reassurance that they can always get to where they need to be” said Víctor Alvarez, CEO and founder of Situm Technologies.

Travellers can download an application using Situm’s indoor GPS to navigate around an airport, train station, museum or gallery. For managers of airports, train stations, conferences or hotels, Situm allows real-time viewing of the staff movements, facilitates better allocation of resources to smooth passenger flow, improves security services, and offers better analytics to improve geo-marketing and targeting.

We are all familiar with arriving in a foreign airport, a huge conference centre complex or busy international train station and feeling lost. Signage doesn’t always help, there’s no one available to ask for help and it’s difficult to spot knowledgeable locals.

Until now, indoor navigation– or “GPS for indoors” – was limited to physical signs, people and large format maps. No longer. With Situm, we can all benefit from our very own personal navigation assistant, on our smartphone or tablet device. So, whether we want to get to the departure gate on time, quickly find the panel session we’re speaking at, or catch that last-minute train, we can do so in the knowledge we won’t get lost along the way.

The Spanish startup provides indoor positioning, tracking and navigation services for many different uses. For example, it can guide visitors inside a large building, track the location of security staff in case of emergencies, or track moving objects inside factories. Situm is the latest startup to benefit from investment by Amadeus Ventures. Thousands of buildings around the world have already used its technology, which provides high location accuracy, up to 1 metre, with the lowest infrastructure investment and complexity for indoor services.

“Improving operations and performance across all parts of the travel sector is a key area of focus for us at Amadeus. By working together with our own teams, developers and startups, we are focused on developing new ways to relieve the tensions that exist for all of us when travelling. Situm offers a really powerful solution and we look forward to having it as part of our investment portfolio and working together to solve some of these challenges,” said Katherine Grass, head of Amadeus Innovation and Ventures.

Amadeus Ventures has co-invested in Situm with Unirisco and Xesgalicia. Amadeus Venturesthe corporate venture arm of Amadeus IT group, is a travel venture program which invests in start-ups sitting at the crossroads of travel and technology. Amadeus launched this initiative in 2014 and Situm is the latest addition to a portfolio that also includes start-ups such as Avuxi, Betterez, Bluesmart, BookingPal, Flyr and Yapta. Amadeus Ventures also invested in Cabify and successfully exited from its investment in 2015.

Biarritz Airport takes the lead in passenger processing technology in France with AmadeusAmadeus’ common use technology helps Biarritz Airport differentiate by making check-in truly mobile to improve the passenger experience. Adoption of Amadeus ACUS to help the airport manage peak summer demand whilst reducing costs for airlines

Imagine being checked-in at the hotel or at your congress center before you leave for the airport. These are just some of the options now open to Biarritz Airport and its partners for improving the way they serve their passengers passing through the airport each year.

This is all possible thanks to a new partnership between Amadeus and Biarritz Airport to implement Amadeus Airport Common Use Service (ACUS) which will bring agility and flexibility of operations to airlines, ground handlers and passengers. With the unique features of ACUS it will be possible to check-in and process passengers from virtually anywhere.

Importantly for Biarritz, an airport that experiences summer peaks in demand, measures can now be taken to reduce queues and handle demand through more flexible check-in and bag drop operations.

According to Didier Riché, Directeur Général, Biarritz Airport, being able to innovate is critical to servicing and attracting airline customers, “Today, simply offering core airport services and a destination isn’t enough. Airports must recognise the experience they offer is critical to both travellers and airlines. We’re proud to be the first airport in France to break from legacy common use systems so that we can re-think how we service passengers. Amadeus’ technology will play a key role to support us in achieving our objectives of digitalising our operations and building a foundation for mobility and self-services.” Riché continued, “Thanks to off-airport

check-in, we will be able to offer new services that allow travellers to spend more time sight seeing, shopping and enjoying their trip. And while at the airport, faster and simpler check-in means passengers will have more freedom and time at the airport to explore new services such as retail. Amadeus’ technology is enabling us to provide excellent service to our passengers.”

ACUS enables greater flexibility and agility in operations as there is no need to manage any dedicated common use servers at an airport. Airline applications are no longer deployed to local airport workstations so server deployment and local site administration is not required. With

ACUS, airline applications are individually hosted as virtualised applications within a centralised server environment so check-in agents can access and launch any airline application via a web browser rather than only one airline-specific software on dedicated desktop on the airport workstation.

Yannick Beunardeau, Global Head of Sales and Marketing, Airport IT at Amadeus said, “Biarittz Airport is our first Amadeus ACUS customer in France, which is a major milestone for us. Today, legacy common use platforms are no longer fit for purpose, they require airlines to maintain expensive network links, rely on significant hardware or dated operating systems at the airport, and constrain the evolution of airlines and how passengers are served.”

Beunardeau added, “Airport-related companies can now embrace the capability of the internet - like other industries have done -

thanks to ACUS, and develop a fundamental shift in aviation. Our remote check-in technology is not only a way to improve IT but to improve our customers’ business itself. Airports are realising that by innovating through technology they can gain a competitive edge and add value to both airlines and passengers.”

Thirty four airports across various continents have now signed agreements for Amadeus’ cloud-based Airport Common Use Service (ACUS) technology.

15 airlines in the Middle East & North Africa sign a significant 10-year distribution agreement with AmadeusDeal supports the airlines’ vision for distribution and reconfirms commitment to the travel agency channel – from airlines who flew 110 million passengers in 2016.

Amadeus selected for its commitment to continued innovation in travel distribution and partnership approach

15 airlines from the Middle East & North Africa have entered into a 10-year framework agreement with Amadeus for distribution services, negotiated and led by the Arab Air Carriers Association (AACO). The airlines participating in the framework agreement to date carried 110 million passengers in 2016, meaning that these airlines will serve over 1 billion passengers during the 10 year duration of the agreement. The contract follows

a previous 10 year agreement with 13 AACO airlines, signed in 2008.

For the participating AACO airlines, the partnership will drive economies of scale, technological efficiencies and support the airlines’ vision for distribution in the future. Participating AACO airlines will work with Amadeus to explore how to further develop and maximise the potential of Amadeus’ travel agency network, including enhanced merchandising and retailing capabilities.

The agreement comes after an 18-month process during which AACO’s ‘taskforce for future distribution strategies’ carefully assessed a variety of technology and distribution providers according to their ability to support the long-term needs of its member airlines.

Amadeus’ vision, technological capabilities and innovative approach were key deciding factors. A partner with clear commitment to airline distribution, evidenced by ongoing investment and a growing travel agency network, will equip participating AACO airlines with the tools to pursue the right distribution strategy to meet their individual business goals.

Abdul Wahab Teffaha, Secretary General, AACO commented, “This efficient, long-term agreement represents a landmark for a number of AACO members with a technology partner dedicated to supporting new business strategies. This framework secures a solid foundation for those AACO members as they continue to innovate and it will remain open for additional member airlines that wish to join in the future.”

Julia Sattel, Senior Vice President, Airlines, Amadeus said, “We are proud to further deepen our partnership with AACO and its member airlines. Amadeus’ focus on innovation and technology, combined with a partnership approach were in close alignment with the requirements identified by the members of AACO’s taskforce for

future distribution strategies. Amadeus’ commitment to evolving airline distribution is demonstrated through its recent IATA NDC Certification as an aggregator and our extensive work on the IATA One Order standard. This deal represents an enormous achievement for Amadeus.”

Maher Koubaa, Vice President, Head of Airline Group, Middle East and Africa, Amadeus added, “Airlines in the Middle East have been some of the most successful in the industry over the past decade. Whether their focus is on providing travellers with a premium product, capitalizing on the region as a hub between Asia and Europe, or pursuing a partnership approach, airlines see the value in an omnichannel distribution strategy, to maximise their sales with travellers across the world. We look forward to working with AACO and its members to best support their growth and to deliver continued value.”

While 15 air l ines have signed the agreement to date, more airlines in this vibrant region will be able to join at a later stage.

Arranging an event requires high doses of organisation and patience. Corporations tend to leave the larger conferences to the professionals, but for the smaller meetings and events, employees often have to double as event planners.

To help make organising a meeting easier, Amadeus and HRS Global Hotel Solutions (HRS) announce the integration of HRS’ meetago small meeting solution with Amadeus cytric Travel & Expense. This agreement is an extension of a longstanding partnership to distribute the HRS hotel content already available in the Amadeus distribution channel.

The integration of HRS’ meetago service with Amadeus cytric Travel & Expense offers a solution to a decades-old challenge: corralling and managing small meeting spend and streamlining the process used to bid for and book rooms for these gatherings.

Amadeus cytric Travel & Expense users can now channel small meetings and the associated travel through one tool, helping consolidate meeting and travel programmes. The automation helps deliver greater insight, savings and transparency on all elements of a hotel programme.

Employees can also now organise a small meeting at one of HRS’ hotels directly through Amadeus cytric Travel & Expense. At the click of a button, the organiser can prepare one Request for Proposal (RFP) detailing the number of attendees, accommodation requirements, and the necessary meeting room and add-ons such as flip-charts, food and beverages, sending it to multiple hotels.

Iconic island airport looks to the future with AmadeusVelana International Airport in the Maldives rolls out Amadeus airport management solutions

Famed for its natural beauty and its reputation as a top honeymoon destination, tourism in the Maldives has grown rapidly over the years to become the country’s largest economic contributor. As a result, Velana International Airport (previously known as Male International Airpor t) is now serving 2 .6 million passengers and over 35 scheduled and chartered carriers annually.

Anticipating an increase in the number of travellers, and to future-proof their business, Velana, the main international airpor t in the Maldives , has now successfully deployed Amadeus’ airport management solutions.

Commenting on the partnership, Adil Moosa, Managing Director, Maldives Airports Company Limited, said, “The recent change in our name to Velana Internat ional Airpor t signifies new beginnings, with new infrastructure developments for the future and we’ve

started by transforming our technology and processes with Amadeus. With the increasing flow of visitors to the Maldives, it was becoming a strain to maintain efficiency and deliver quality experiences due to numerous manual processes.”

Moosa added, “We have been growing steadily over the past decade as tourism has come to the fore, and we really see the value in Amadeus’ technology to help us manage and automate our airport operations. It’s also great that it was accessible to a smaller airport like Velana, we’re already seeing cost savings, reduced delays, and healthier profit margins. More importantly, it has empowered us to continue providing passengers a smooth experience through our ‘gateway to paradise’.”

Through this par tnership, Amadeus has recently deployed Amadeus Airport Operational Database (AODB), to host,

manage, and disseminate complex f light-related information . Amadeus AODB provides complete visibility of flight schedules up to 365 days ahead to accurately forecast passenger and baggage demand. Velana has also implemented Amadeus Airport Fixed Resource Management Solution (RMS) which allows the airport to determine the best resource allocation against its flight schedule.

Together, these two solutions enable the airport to accurately plan an optimised management of its resources far in advance. Velana will be able to make data-driven decisions for precise resource allocation, resulting in better slot adherence and increased on-time performance. The technology has been proven to reduce delays, minimise costs, maximise revenues and increase operational efficiency.

Sarah Samuel, Head of Airport IT Sales, Amadeus Asia Pacific, said, “As we grow our customer base in Asia Pacific, it is key that we are able to service any type or size of airport, anywhere in the region. Our scalable technology fits perfectly with Velana’s plans for future growth without the need for big future investments. This has been an exciting project for us as we have adapted our offer to meet and exceed the needs of our customer. We are proud of the trust that Velana International has placed in us to deliver this market-leading solution.”

Amadeus is currently working with the airport to implement more airport management solutions throughout its journey of digital transformation.
