Interactions.org and Lightsources.org

• Interactions.org– International Collaboration of Particle Physics Laboratories around the

world– First meeting in 2001, launched the web site in 2003– News Wire carries the press releases from each lab to several hundreds

science journalists around the world– Signed MoU to share expenses of the web site, meetings etc– Meet twice per year to discuss issues such as multiple press releases from

participating countries in LHC• Lightsources.org

– Inspired by Interactions.org, Lightsources.org aggregate the news andpress releases from the laboratory of accelerator based light sources suchas synchrotron radiation, XFEL and ERL

– First meeting in 2003, launched the web site in 2005– News Wire carries the press releases from each lab to several hundreds

science journalists around the world

ILC Communications

• Global Design Effort (GDE) is an international collaboration tocoordinate the effort of designing the International Linear Collider, ledby Barry Barish and three regional directors from Americas, Asia andEurope.

• Since the Snowmass workshop in 2005, four “dedicated” ILCCommunicators from the three regions are working for Barry Barish, writing stories, maintaining the web site (linearcollider.org), designingbrochures, preparing ILC Design Report, and coordinating other ILCcommunications initiative.

Challenges of Communication in Particle Physics

• Broad range of audiences– The global community of the big projects themselves– Our own laboratories– Regional HEP communities– Universities and Institutes– Other field of physics / Other field of science– Funding agencies– Policy makers and opinion leaders– ICFA, ECFA, ACFA, HEPAP, OECD, IUPAP, JPS, APS, EPS, DPF, ...– Media / Industry / Public– Our neighbors– Students / Teachers

• ... and more ...?

Summary

• Scientific endeavor is a part of our human activities – itneed to be well communicated and well understood by therest of the society

• Scientific communication, outreach and relationship to therest of the human society is as important as the researchitself!

• It involves all of us – and that means, you !• Communications between HEP communicators had a good

start – paving ways for truly global “21st century style”science communications

• Need to respect languages and cultural differences
