The Korea-China LEADership Program is an academic exchangeprogram that seeks to foster in-depth mutual understanding andfriendship between Korean and Chinese undergraduate and gradu-

ate students. The program was launched in 2012 in cooperationwith Peking University, Fudan University, Renmin University ofChina and Tsinghua University. KFAS selects 35 Korean studentsand 35 Chinese students for the three- week academic exchange pro-gram that lakes place every August. 8. CHINA·US·ROK TRILATERAL CONFERENCE

Since 2014, KFAS, Brookings Institution, and the School ofInternational Studies i.ItPeking University have co-organized threerounds of the Trilateral Conference. China·US-ROK Trilateral Con-ference is a platform that has been established for renowned schol-ars to conduct frank dialogue to seek ways to promote progressiverelationships between the lhree countries.

The inaugural Trilateral Conference was held at the KFASConference Hall in April 2014. Continuing the deliberationsundertaken in Seoul, the second round was held at BrookingsInstitution in Washington. D.C. in December 2014. Following theprevious two rounds, the third round of the Dialogue was held atthe School of International Studies at Peking University fromOctober 9 to 10,2015.

9. KNOWLEDGE SHARING PROGRAMS

KFAS began the Knowledge Sharing Program to provide oppor-umities 10 the general public to listen to special lectures from the!world's leading scholars and experts.

In March 2015, a special lecture by Professor Shin Gi-Wook ofprofessor at Stanford University wass held at the KFAS ConferenceHall. In May. Professor Francis Fukuyama of Stanford Universityand Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs of Columbia University deliveredspecial lectures titled "Is There a Democratic Recession?" and "TbeAge of Sustainable Development" respectively.

In August, KFAS organized TEDxKFAS, a new platform forknowledge sharing. TEDx events are independently planned andcoordinated by universities, communities and private institutes allover the world under (l free license granted by TED, whose sloganis "ideas worth spreading".

More than 700 people attended the '·TEDxKFAS: Impact on theFuture," where renowned experts from different parts of the worldshared their insights and idea s on the three topics, "Smart Living","China in 2025" and "Venture: for a Better Future,"

10. LIBRARY

The KFAS Library was established in order to provide researchmaterials to KFAS scholarship recipients and ISEF fellows, andto aid the research of scholars in the social sciences, natural sci-enees. East Asian studies, computer science and electric engi-ncering. The library's collection includes domestic and foreignacademic books, journals. scientific society publications, doctoraldissertations. information on leading universities and other studyabroad reference materials. Research assistance is also providedfor ISEF fellows.Through the inter-library loan system with Korea Education

and Research Information Service (KERIS). Korea SpecialLibrary Association (KSLA), and National Digital Science Links(NDSL) offered by the Korea Institute of Science and Tcchnolo-gy Information (KIST]), the KFAS Library is able to provideusers with materials from hundreds of libraries in Korea andaround the world.

International Scholar Exchange Fellowship 2017 - 2018

The International Scholar Exchange Fellowship (lSEF) pro- sia, Laos, Malaysia. Mongolia, Myanmar. Uzbekistan and Viet-gram aims to enhance regional academic exchange and cooper-ation by providing Asian scholars with an opportunity to live inKorea and conduct research for six months or one year. Thisprogram was established in J 999. and began supporting schol-ars the next year.

A total of 838 ISEF fellows have been selected over the last17 years from Asian countries like Cambodia, China, India,Indonesia, Iran. Iraq, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia,Myanmar. the Philippines. Russia. Thailand. and Vietnam. The2016-2017 ISEF fellows arrived in Seoul this past August. Thiscohort consists of 34 scholars from Cambodia. China. lndone-

nam. They have successfully begun conducting their proposedresearch in collaboration with their host scholars at 15 majoruniversities and research institutions in Korea.

The ISEF program provides outstanding scholars with com-prehensive research expenses during their stay in Korea. whichinclude round-trip airfare. initial settlement support. a monthlyresearch stipend, research paper publication support, and acci-dent insurance. During their stay in Korea. fellows enjoy fullaccess 10 KFAS facilities including the seminar rooms andlibrary to help their research.

KFAS invites prominent scholars from Asia and the Middle

East in the fields of humanities. social sciences, petrochemicalengineering, electrical engineering. electronic science. telecom-munications, computer science and life science.

Following (he Foundation's tradition of honoring the freedomof SCholarship, Scholars are given the freedom to choose their

research topics within these fields.KFAS also offers Korean language classes and seminars as

well as educational trips to cultural sites and industrial facilitiesto enhance ISEF fellows' understanding of Korea.

• Cultural ToursCultural {Ours are provided twice during the year of research.Fellows will visit major Korean cities and cultural areas tolearn about Korean history and traditions.

Fellows are required to submit progressreports on (he proposed research project onon November 15.2017 and February 15and May 15,2018.

• Final research paperFellows are required to submit a finalresearch paper based on the research theyconducted during the fellowship period byFebruary 15 or August 15.2018, Thepapers should use international standardformatting for academic papers.

12. OBLIGATIONS

• Fellows shall devote themselves 10 theirresearch project without committing to anytype outside employment

• Fellows may purticipate in activitieswithin the limits permitted by their visastatus.

• Fellows shall not violate any Korean lawduring (he fellowship period.

• Fellows shall not receive any other finan-cial support than that provided by the ISEFProgram.

• Fellows shall reside in Korea for the fel-lowship period. and will not leave Koreatemporarily at his/her discretion withoutprior approval by KF AS,

• Fellows shall return to his/her home coun-try after the fellowship period expires,

• Failure to comply with the aforementionedregulations specified as "Obligations" mayresult in disadvantages or expulsion fromthe ISEF Program.

1) Check your eligibility<Thoroughly read (he "Infonnation of International ScholarExchange Fellowship 2017-2018" to make sure that youmeet all the requirements such as eligible field of researchand country. Those who do not meet such requirements willbe rejected without notice,

2) Become an online KF AS member and log in• Eligible applicants must first go to the KFAS website atwww.kfas.or.kr and become a member. Make sure youenter your correct e-mail address.

• After you become a KFAS member. an authentication num-ber will be sent to the e-mail address that was. provided.

• Please enter the authentication number (hefirst time YOll login to the KF AS website. Make sure there are no spaces pre-ceding the authentication number. Afterwards, you will onlyneed to enter your ID and password to log in.

I) Complete the application form

• At the main page of the KFAS website (www.kfas.or.kr).click "ISEF Application'> ut the bottom of main page. Youmay ulsc go to "International Program," and then go to"ISEF'"' to click "ISEF Application."

• The ISEF Application section of the website is made of threepages: Personal lnformntion, Academic Information, andAdditional Information. You may save the entered infcrma-lion only after completing each page. You cannot save anincomplete page. After saving all three pages. the applicationform is complete.

• All items must be entered in English. For Chinese applicants,Chinese may be entered in some cases. but always along withEnglish.

• Required fields (marked with a red dot) must be entered inorder to move to the next item.

• The ARC thai applies to you must be selected at the middleof the Personal Information page. Applicants from institu-tions where Asia Research Center (ARC) is located mustselect his/her home institution. Applicants from institutionswithout Asia Research Center (ARC) must select "Korea."(Please refer to page 2 for institutions with ARCs).

• If you apply without indicating the applicable ARC, theapplication will not be considered for evaluation.

2) Write your research proposal and attach documents

• Research proposals should be attached as a doc, dccx. pdf, orppt file. The file name should be your full name (e.g. WangLei.doc).

• Research proposals must be a mini-mum of four si n glc-s paced A4pages, and use Times New Roman.12 point font.

• At the beginning of your proposal,please indicate your full name, affili-ation. field of research. and proposedresearch topic.

• Research proposals should includethe following items:

- Motivation and need eM this pro-ject: B~ specific about your spe-cializcd academic interest withinyourfidd.

• Background: Place your research

project in an academic context by referencing major worksby other scholars in this field. A selected bibliography maybe attached in order to specify the background of your pro-posed project. Also describe how your proposed researchplan is related 10 your previous study/research, and fits yourfuture academic goals.

• Objectives: Write ,I clear and detailed description of yourproposed research objectives.

- Scope, design and methodology: Describe the scope.design and methodology of your proposed research project.

- Schedule: Explain how your project can be completedwithin the duration of this fellowship.

_ Significance: Explain the significance of your proposedproject for your academic field. your own professionaldevelopment and your home country.

• Dissemination plan: Describe your plans for disseminatingyour research findings in both your horne country and else-where.

- Publications: Include a complete list of your publications.translated into English. You should use the standard citationand bibliographical fonnat.

3) Attach your photo

• Please attach a recent photograph (c.g. passport photo).

• After completing the online application form. you must sub-mit 2 recommendation letters, 2 research samples. a ccnifi-care of employment, and a letter of research affiliation (ifapplicable) 10 KFAS by post. If your home institution has anARC, you must submit the documents to the applicable ARC.After an initial screening at your ARC. ARCs will send thedocuments of qualified candidates to KFAS.

2) Research Sample• 2 research samples that best represent your work (i.e. booksor research papers) must be submitted. An English abstractof no longer than 300 words must be attached to eachresearch sample.

• Upon selection as an ISEF fellow. you must contact Koreaninstitutions and scholars immediately to arrange your

research affiliation. Youshould send KFAS aletter of research affilia-tion as soon as yourarrangements are made.

• Fellows should findtheir own host scholaras they best understandtheir field of study andresearch proposal, It isalso best for fellows andhost scholars to contacteach other directly foractive cooperation andexchange during theresearch period. Youarc also advised toinquire whether theinstitution's accommo-dations, such as dormi-tones or apartments. arcavailable for use. Youmust thoroughly dis-cuss each other's role

and involvement in your research before arriving in Korea.

5. CONFIRM SUBMISSION OF APPUCATION

• After submitting your application form. you may checkwhether all materials were received at My Page.

·ISEF Fellows will be announced on March 31, 2017. Youmay also check My Page for results.

6. IMPORTANT NOTICE

I) All documents must reach KFAS by the application deadlinein order to be considered for the following academic year,which begins in September.

2) All communication, including questions about your applica-tion. should be sent to the ARC in the applicant's respectivecountry or to KF AS.
