Great article on Sun Spa Tanning. I’ve wondered if going there would be worth it as I have been burned by other salons that are there one month and gone the next. Both she and her dad seem to be super nice and down to earth folks. It’s nice to finally know why the other salons go out of businessBarb C.

Saw your article on Skinny Pig Pizza. Your human interest element in Saucepan re-ally makes one appreciate the risk and effort restaurant owners take on to bring their food to the masses and the back story that got them there. Keep up the excellent work. I’ll be reading.Dave M.

*****

How can I tell if I subscribed? Ed. - You will get the email on Thursdays with the link to download the paper. If you don’t see it, check your spam box. If it’s not in spam, check to see if the issue has been released on schedule. We’ve been delayed till Friday a few times because certain venues don’t report their music listings as they should. We’re going to have to let readers know that there are no live music events scheduled at those venues. At the latest, you should have the paper by Friday.

*****

I still love Anna Pinion’s work. She’s still pretty and I NEED to know, is she single?Chico M.Ed. - We asked her and she said she’d get back to us on that.

*****

Why is it that a big city mayor thinks that she can do what she tried to do with that maneuver against area pastors? Doesn’t she realize that the US Constitution is still in force, even in Texas?Ed. - No, we don’t believe that she even knows why we have a constitution, in the first place.

I noticed that your digital paper is a pdf. Do you check it for viruses before sending it out?Sean G.Ed. - Absolutely. We use Avast! and Microsoft Defender to check our paper for any viruses

WILL MIDNIGHT STRIKE ON THE BEARKATS FRIDAY NIGHT?Sam Houston State’s Cinderella Story Plays For Just One More Game

Bearkat running back Jalen Overstreet (10) stretches forward for a late game score

It’s about as improbable as it gets. Sam Houston State, with a new head coach and new cast of players, is playing in the Final Four against North Dakota State. It’s the very same program that SHSU faced twice in the last three years, both times for the NCAA FCS Championship, losing both contests. As improbable as it is, the Bearkats are the lone unranked team among the four pro-

grams left fighting for the right to be called National Champions. Now Cinderella must get back to Texas from the cold north at the Fargo Dome with a win notched in her belt. The odds are against her. The luck of the draw no longer in her favor, nor has it ever been during this long four month season. In baseball terms, the Kats are on their final out, just hours from elimination or from punching a ticket to Frisco for the third try for a National Championship. The trifecta is in play here. If Sam Houston can beat North Dako-ta State in their house, then there is no doubt left in believing that Sam

Houston State may have enough chutzpah to carry her all the way to hoisting that coveted National Championship Trophy on January 10th in Frisco, Texas. With star running back Keshawn Hill in-jured, Sam Houston State will have to bring their level of play to a point that even they, themselves, would not recognize. The clock will strike midnight and the Bearkats will take a silent flight back to Huntsville. They would have played their best, but this time their best would not have been good enough. North Dakota State has the greater incen-tive; to reach the FCS Championship for the fourth consecutive year.Prediction: North Dakota State by 14 over Sam Houston State

“The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist.”

It’s absolute madness the last few years. Just two years ago, Christmas sales and promotions started making its presence known the day after Halloween. Halloween! Last year, Thanksgiving Day was interrupted at 6pm for early Christmas shopping. What is the reason for this madness? The reason can be found in the commercialization of Christmas. Christmas, formally known as the annual celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, the central figure of most of the major religions, has been set aside for the purpose of businesses

to start making up all the losses during the last 11 (or now 10) months of the year. Black Friday is the day that most retailers can make up ground and go “out of the red (read: debt) and into the black (read: profit)”. Why is this so? Is it because Christians are the most generous of people or the most gullible of people? I believe it is be-cause of the former. Chris-

tians are genuinely a giving people. But, try to manipulate them, and they will smell that con a mile away. The more retailers try to press them, the more likely they will stay away. Especially true when retailers start devaluing Christmas’ meaning by ignoring its cultural significance and referring to it as just another ‘Holiday’ to profit from. Let’s leave the profiting to other holidays; like Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day or Thanks-giving. Has anyone learned this yet? If you force anyone to conform to your way of thinking, they will rebel. It’s a natural reaction. People love to work together. People like to know that others respect their values. Call Christmas was it is.

Now, about the term ‘holiday’, do you realize that this simply means ‘holy day’? When some-one wishes you ‘Happy Holidays”, they are most likely combining all those events that occur dur-ing this time of year. By that I mean, Thanksgiv-ing, Hanukkah, Christmas and New Years Day. Yeah, yeah, I can hear you... BUT Thanksgiv-ing and New Years Day are NOT “holy days”. You are correct, they are not. But in our educa-tionally deficient environment, our culture tends to lump real religious events with other days like Groundhogs Day, Flag Day, Veterans Day or even the religious sounding St. Patrick’s Day. The bottom line is this, I guess we need to be less thin-skinned and even less offended when people offer up a “Happy Holiday” greeting. Since most strangers do not know what religion you prefer or practice, they’re just playing it safe. Be nice in return and offer them a pleasant greeting back.

ONE AND A HALF MINUTE READING TIME A reader sent me a note regarding my distain for the St. Louis Ram’s football team and their little display of affiliation with the Ferguson riot-ers (also known as ‘looters’). “Ken, the note read, I couldn’t agree with you more. But, instead of ‘Hands Up, Don’t Shoot’ those rioters would have best been served with ‘Pants Up, Don’t Loot.’” Sir, your words echoes on my column. Any flames coming my way will be directed to you!

ONE MINUTE LEFT OF READING TIME There have been hundreds of downloads of the Public News over the last few issues. It’s a humbling experience and one that I am not too ashamed to admit. The Public News digitally is catching on exponentially with readers. As we move forward we are going to need some help. The last four issues have gone long by a day and would have best been served by folks who can

do the things needed to make this new medium meet its deadlines. So, with that being said, I’m planning on expanding the number of pages over the next couple of months. For example, next week we are shooting for a 14-page publication, and a 20-page publication by the end of January. I’m going to need folks to take ownership to parts of this paper so I can concentrate on generating the support needed to pay for it, and for them. As much as a joy it is to write, layout and com-pose, it is very exhausting for one man to maintain this standard. If you like what you read in this paper, if you love the look of it or even passed it along to friends, Consider being a part of it as a regular contributor, an artist or as an advertiser.

hen the Nov 2014 vote on incorpora-tion of The Woodlands was cancelled, it appeared that the proverbial “third

option” had been discovered. There seems to be general consensus that this is an inevitable necessity to be able to make local laws and

get local tax revenues raised from the area completely spent there. The 43% of estimated Montgomery County taxes raised is frequently disputed as to its return in kind. It is indisput-able that the 1/16th sales tax paid to the City of Houston not to be “King-wooded” since 2007 (or annexed by the smaller city of Conroe) is not

spent there. “Annexation Threat Relief” came at a cost but it wasn’t in the form of gained services and protection. Mayor Bill White’s “compromise” to bring

in much needed revenues for a city budget in deep debt without adding many unhappy and opposite-party affiliated-residents was more to his personal advantage than a mutually beneficial arrangement. There are innumer-able benefits to self government. The positive effect it has on an area’s image for businesses and residents considering moving there is impossible to measure. Potentially detrimental decisions made by NON Woodlands Mont-gomery County residents can be approved un-der the current arrangement. Most Woodlands residents would argue they already have been. Chairman Tough’s example of Bloom-berg’s drink ban in NYC as an example of the negatives of local governance risk holds little concern to most residents. Recent studies with varying tax rate increases do. The Woodlands stands out as one of the few master planned communities which received federal funds to have not only survived, but thrived. The dou-bling of population from 56,000 to 112,000 from 2000 to 2012 validates the success of its governance form in the past. “If it aint broke

don’t fix it” aside, conditions are changing quickly and “doing it like we’ve always done things” won’t last much longer. Many feel that point has already been reached I applaud the past fiduciary civic wisdom demonstrated by The Township Board of Directors The incorporation tax costs done back in 2012 by Novak Consulting estimated a $28.5 million cost increase to incorporate. There was some disagreement last Fall on the accuracy of those figures from 3 of the 4 candidates running for the 3 Township Direc-tor positions, but it is clear that the benefits of obtaining the power to locally govern will come at a cost much higher than the $700,000 annual buy-off “protection” price paid to Houston. With a sales tax at the state maximum rate, this would have to be born by property taxes. The tax increases will be more than made up in property value increases and equity. In matters of finance and politics, timing is everything. How long should The Wood-lands’ residents continue to wait and pay Houston/Conroe/Montgomery County taxes/extortion that might be better spent the way THEY choose independently? As long as the safety, services, and infrastructure are main-tained and property values and population continue escalate, apparently the answer is: “a while longer”, but not much.

Let’s Play, a community partnership led by Dr Pepper Snapple (DPS) to get kids and families active, is helped bring play to one lucky Houston school. Early Saturday morning, Let’s Play; its partners KaBOOM! and Good Sports, two organizations dedicated to promoting bal-anced and active play; and a team of 200+ volunteers built a playground from the ground up, and donated more than $50,000 in brand new sports equipment to various Houston-area schools. In the afternoon, Let’s Play hosted a free

event open to the public with games, prizes and fun for kids of all ages, including boun-cy houses, obstacles courses, face painting and snacks. Houston Dynamo player An-thony Arena joined in on the fun and signed autographs and took photos with kids. Let’s Play provides the tools, places and inspiration to make physical activity a daily priority and has committed $26 million to support programs that create inspirational play spaces and provide the resources and equipment children need to engage in active play.

Justin McClung, a distinguished agent in the real estate industry, has joined Keller Williams The Woodlands operation. McClung brings his team in this move including Pat Dody, Tiffany McClung, Melissa Richardson, and Dayna Johnson. “Justin’s team values are a perfect match for Keller Williams the way he cares for his clients and gives back in the community,” says Bruce Kink, Operating Principle and Broker for the Keller Wil-liams The Woodlands office. “His desire to grow his team and business aligns with the mantra of our KW models and systems which believe in helping our agents grow their businesses just like every other successful profes-sional environment that exists.” “We are excited to join Keller Williams Realty in The Woodlands and to be associated with the #1 broker in the country. GETTING THE RAGE OUT

Idea man, entrepreneur 26-year old Greg Olsen the inventor of the Rage Fit is a rather quiet person, but he would never let on that he has more going on in his head than running a small leather goods shop. What stands out inside his shop is a 20-foot long shipping container-like object that sits near the back with a sole door leading in and out of it with a neon ‘Wel-come’ sign hanging above it. This is where the Rage Fit happens. “Rage Fit is for stress relief,” Olsen began, “It’s based on Gestalt therapy and the release of rage, stress and pent up aggression through physical activity with a pleasing feeling of reward. It’s not about invoking dark thoughts of anger by allowing you to trash something that is not yours.” Gestalt therapy is a type of therapy used to

deepen awareness of person and their feelings in a less intellectual manner than the more traditional forms of therapy. “Gestalt” means the whole; it implies wholeness. In any expe-rience or interaction there are feelings in the foreground and in the background. The idea in Gestalt therapy is that all of us have had to repress or suppress aspects of our-

selves because they were not accepted or supported. It is these aspects of our-selves or our feelings that end up in the background and can become unfinished business.

As for Olsen, Rage Fit is his prime focus. The leather and embroidery business, he feels, is the bread and butter. It takes care of the bills while he builds awareness for his passion which is helping people handle their anger is-sues. All this stems from his history as a youth

dealing with his anger issues. “My therapist said not to go cause problems in society, to go do something, to give myself a sense of accom-plishment. Something that it would be more beneficial for me like ripping a phone-book in half than to go out and smash a bunch of car windows. First, doing so would lead me to getting a police record and I’d have to pay for all those windows, whereas ripping a phone book in half would give me a sense of accomplishment.” Rage Fit was designed to do just that, provide a sonic reward for transferring your anger to a glass object that is hurled at a stone wall. “Here’s how it works,” Olsen continued, “You go into the Rage Fit box, a dark room with strobe lights with yellow trim lights, along with the glass items you purchased. Once inside, you have nothing to worry about except for what’s on your

mind. At this time your anger, your frustration, your aggressions, and its about (dealing with the) chemical reaction in your brain can build up. So the idea is that when you throw some-thing against the wall, the physical action of throwing it and then hearing the glass shatter is (a) very therapeutic (sound). That piece of glass that you are throwing is your anger. It’s coming out of your hand, your head and out of your body. When that piece of glass hits that stone wall and causes the lights in that room to go off and everything, it’s an accomplishment. It’s a piece of anger that just shattered into a bunch broken glass that you can leave behind. We’ll clean it up in the morning!” Prices to take advantage of Rage Fit range from the simple to the complex. You can buy 10 bottles, plates and/or cups to throw inside the box for $25, or just purchase one item to throw. “We also have some crystal for sale, in case you want to throw some of that, but that’s pretty expensive since it’s Italian crystal. Sometimes someone comes in to get their anger out and they feel bad about the target of their anger, so they end up buying crystal as a gift.” While inside the Rage Fit box, you can take your time. There are markers that you can use to write on your item before hurling it toward the stone wall. Because the box was built solid and near sound proof, you can yell at the top of your lungs while throwing your piece of glass item. Rage Fit requires anyone who uses their fa-cility to sign a waiver against injury, but Olsen worked hard to make sure everyone using the box is protected. Leather gloves are provided so as to protect your hand from being cut by the glass, goggles to protect your eyes and a protective counter that you stand behind as you hurl your items. “We also have rules about footwear. We don’t allow sandals or flip-flops inside the box.” Olsen tells the PN. The targeted stone wall itself is angled with the top of the wall pitched forward in such a way that the glass shards are deflected downward so glass pieces don’t come back at people. “It took my mom, my wife and myself, three months to build the Rage Fit box.” Olsen add-ed. “The purpose of Rage Fit, is to help make your anger work for you. not against you” Inside there is a Bluetooth speaker system where participants can listen to any kind of music. “People would like to listen to anything really. I’ve heard Britney Spears, Fallout Boy, Slipknot and Korn.” Olsen adds. The end game for Olsen is to see Rage Fit duplicated across the country. “I’ve wanted to do this for a long time. I just never had the funding. I’m hoping that this ad-vertising blitz will get some people’s attention and yeah I’d love to show people, in person, what a great idea this is.”

NEW MUSIC UPCOMING

RELIC REVIEW

Unsigned Only Music Competition revealed today its high-profile judging panel for the 2015 competition, which is now accepting entries. The renowned panel consists of iconic recording artists and journalists and will determine the winners in eleven categories representing a wide variety of commercial genres of music. Designed for solo artists, bands, and singers who are not signed to a major label, Unsigned Only’s goal is to find an outstanding, talented performing artist: a band, singer, or solo artist. Unsigned Only gives away over $100,000 in cash and prizes, including $10,000 in cash and one-on-one mentoring by an elite group of re-cord company executives to the overall Grand Prize winner. First and Second Place winners in each category will also be chosen. The deadline to enter is March 18, 2015. Original and cover songs are accepted in all categories except for Screen Shot which accepts original songs only. Artists may enter into any of the following categories: Adult Album Alternative (AAA) Adult Contemporary (AC); Americana; Chris-tian; Country; Folk/Singer-Songwriter; R&B/Hip-Hop; Rock; Pop/Top 40; Screen Shot; Teen; and Vocal Performance. Screen Shot is a new category that has been added this year, and it is geared toward help-ing artists get their music in film, TV, video games, and advertising. Music execs who are looking to place music in various projects will be judging this category and will also provide advice on music licensing to the winner of the category. Included are: Michelle Bayer (Shelly Bay Music); Michelle Silverman (Modern

Planet); Ani Johnson (Monomyth Media); Evan Stein (Experience Music Group); Velma Barkwell (East End Music Productions); Jen Taunton (Level Two Music); and more to be announced. “Last year Screen Shot was a special promo-tion that we ran for entrants,” says Founders/Directors Candace Avery and Jim Morgan. “The response was huge and was a great suc-cess for many artists who were able to secure licensing deals for their music. This is just another way for Unsigned Only to help its entrants, and we are excited to be able to open these new doors for independent artists.” Judges include: Aimee Mann; Alt-J; Dustin Lynch; Sinead O’Connor; The Killers; Rosanne Cash; David Crowder; Robert Smith (The Cure); Darryl McDaniels (Run DMC); Ray Wylie Hubbard; Aaron Shust; Lucero; Kelly Price; Colt Ford; Frank Foster; Jason Gray; Rapsody; Kool And The Gang; Anthony DeCurtis (Contributing Editor, Rolling Stone); Kyle Anderson (Senior Writer, Entertain-ment weekly); Josh Jackson (Co-Founder and Editor-In-Chief, Paste Magazine); Chris Rich-ards (Pop Music Critic, The Washington Post); Michael Hann (Music Editor, The Guardian); Shirley Halperin (Music Editor, Billboard and Hollywood Reporter); Lucy Jones (Deputy Editor, NME); Hardeep Phull (Music Critic, New York Post); and more to be announced. Unsigned Only is sponsored by: Sony Creative Software, Guitar Center, D’Addario, Disc Makers, Ultimate Ears, Lurssen Master-ing, Master Tour by Eventric, and The Music Business Registry.

2015 UNSIGNED ONLY MUSIC COMPETITION JUDGING PANEL ANNOUNCEDSinead O’Connor, Alt-J, The Killers, Aimee Mann, Dustin Lynch,Rosanne Cash, and More Sign On As Judges

Many years ago I was talking to some of the choir members at my church, when the subject of music tastes came up. I admitted that I have extremely eclectic tastes, but with a fondness for blues. Now, there are about a zillion kinds of blues music: Delta blues, St. Louis blues, Chicago blues, New Orleans blues, Texas blues, slide guitar blues, electric blues, electric Texas blues, pick your own! But my favorite is still bottleneck slide guitar blues from the 1920’s. Blues with one man playing his guitar, one man playing his fingers off, one man singing his heart and soul! So someone said that I would be out of luck in Heaven, because whatever else kind of music there would be, there for sure wouldn’t be no blues music in Heaven! No blues music at all! I brooded about that for a while, I can tell you. No blues in Heaven? No blues music in Heaven? How could there be no soulful, pow-erful, heart-rending blues music in Heaven? Later, I was search-ing for sheet music for a movie soundtrack song I thought the choir might try (John the Revelator from The Blues Brothers 2000). I discov-ered John the Revelator had been written and originally recorded by Blind Willie Johnson in 1930. I ordered a copy of the CD Dark Was the Night by Blind Willie Johnson, and struck GOLD! (You really need to be specific, because there were several ‘Blind Willies’ and about dozen ‘Johnsons’ singing the blues in the 1920-30’s, but I’ll just use Blind Willie from now on.) Blind Willie’s music style was pure old-time un-amped bottleneck slide guitar blues (although he often used his pocket knife in his palm, along with a bottleneck on his little finger). Most of his songs incorporated or covered older Negro spirituals, with his own interpre-tation, his words, his spirit, his slide guitar all combining to make music that was not just blues, not just Negro spirituals, but pure joy and spiritual salvation! Blind Willie knew about physical pain, he knew about poverty and hunger, he knew about family loss and break-up. He was born around 1900 in central Texas, son of a black share-cropper, and from his earliest days exhibited an exceptional musical talent, building his own cigar box guitar before age five. When he was about 5 years old, his mother died and his father remarried a woman

who hated Willie. A couple of years later, she threw lye in Willie’s face during a fight with his father, blinding him and scarring his vocal cords. Music was one of the few life choices for a blind black man in 1920’s Texas, and despite being blind and having an impaired voice (his normal tone was a raspy, harsh burned baritone), Blind Willie kept growing in talent, developing into a locally-renowned guitar and piano player and gospel blues singer. Blind Willy became a Baptist Preacher, a street-corner evangelist in the towns of Central Texas, bringing the word and worship of God to people through his music. On a trip to Dallas, he met his (possibly first) wife Willie B. Harris, and they married in 1927, although there is no license on file.

She joined him in his street ministries in Waco and Dallas, singing back-up for him at first, eventu-ally singing counterpoint and then even lead while he played guitar and piano. At times Angelina Johnson also joined his street ministries, and she was probably his eventual

second wife (again, there is no license on file). Blind Willie became one of the first black gospel artists (called “Race Artists”) to record commercially. In December 1927 he recorded six songs for Columbia Records, in Dallas: If I had My Way; It’s Nobody’s Fault But Mine; Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed; I know His Blood Can Make Me Whole; Mother’s Chil-dren Have A Hard Time; and of course, Dark Was the Night. All six are on my re-mastered Dark Was the Night CD. No back-up singer was credited, but it was most likely his wife. In December 1928 Blind Willie laid down four more songs for Columbia, in Dallas. Willie B. Harris was credited as the back-up singer. Lord I Just Can’t Keep From Crying and Keep Your Lamp Trimmed, two songs from this session, are also on my re-mastered Dark Was The Night CD. In December 1929 Blind Willie recorded ten more songs for Columbia, in New Orleans. Again, his back-up singer was not credited. Bye and Bye I’m Going to See the King; Let Your Light Shine On Me; God Moves On The Water; and Praise God I’m Satisfied from this session are on my re-mastered Dark Was The Night CD. Blind Willie made his final recording ses-sion in 1930 in Atlanta, again for Columbia,

WHEN THE HOBBY BECOMES A VOCATION Mr. B’s Barbeque on FM 2920 is a testimony to what can happen when a cook excels!

ADVICE BY LEZLEE

Dear LezLee, I am a 40 years old single female and find myself overly concerned with what my mother thinks and it is really messing up my life... I can’t date anyone without wondering if my mother would like him. I constantly diet knowing my mom thinks I am overweight (I have struggled with this for years). In addition, I find myself crying then becoming really mad whenever she makes one of her disapproving comments. What is wrong with me? Thanks, Sarah Dear Sarah, Sounds like you have mastered the art of “pleasing” which can be a good thing if not taken too far The power your mother appears to have over you probably has roots in the need to be accepted - a normal human requirement. However, when catering to anyone’s desires or wishes interferes with who we are and how we live our life - it’s time for intervention. Realizing that you cannot change your mother, the power lies with you. Only when we begin to accept ourselves and recognize that we are worth loving unconditionally can we free ourselves from what has been called “co-dependent” behavior. There are a lot of good resources on the subject. Check the local bookstore in the self-help section. Good luck! LezLee Dear LezLee, Please help! My usual outgoing 13 -year- old

daughter is going through some kind of total personality change. It seems like overnight she changed from a loving, gentle little girl who liked to hang out in the den and watch TV to a reclusive, secretive and angry child who never comes out of her room! She won’t talk to me and if I try to press the issue she just closes up more. I am scared that something horrible may have happened to her or she may be involved in drugs or something equally as bad. What do I do? Much appreciated,Tina Dear Tina, What you have described can be normal teenage behavior resulting from an increase in the sex hormones around this age; however, it could also be that your “mommy antenna” is correct and she is undergoing some kind of a crisis. Teens this age need a lot of privacy and want your respect. Without pushing, let her know that you are there if she ever needs to talk. It’s important that she not feel judged by you but respected as a person in her own right. If you disapprove of a behavior, tell her - you are her mom - but validate her feelings on the subject as well. All you can provide is solid information as she will ultimately make her own choices. If you notice a drop in grades, eating habits, or extreme moodiness - a trip to the doctor is probably in order. Take advantage of school counselors, physicians & books on the subject & enjoy your quiet den - it may not last for long! LezLee

The Problem Of People Pleasers and The Drastically Moody Teen Scene

There is a relatively new barbeque restaurant that has opened up on the FM 2920 restaurant row halfway between I-45 and Kuykendahl. Mr. B’s Barbeque owner Glenn Berry is striv-ing to be the new standard to which all other barbeque places will be judged. “It’s a passion of mine since I was a kid watching my dad barbeque brisket for the fam-ily. His brisket was really good, so I gave it a go. After a while my brothers and sisters were telling me that mine was better that our dads, but not to tell him that. Later, even my dad agreed with them”, Berry recalls. Berry had been barbequing for 15 years before leaving the corporate life and starting his own restaurant. “I was in a secure nine to five job but I was told to pursue something that would fulfill my passion and be in control of my destiny.” Berry left the corporate world and, at the urging of friends and family, opened up Mr. B’s Barbeque with his 20 year pension. So, what makes his barbeque great? “I’ve never competed in barbeque events. It

seems that everyone’s got something to prove, not me. I’ve got enough stress in my life,” Berry laughed. Berry believes that making barbeque the old fashioned way through slow smoking his meat which brings out the flavor intensity is key. Mr. B’s offers what Berry calls the “four food groups”, beef brisket, ribs, chicken, and sau-sage. Mr. B’s also makes their own barbeque sauce. The reason people love Mr. B’s is for their brisket. “If their preference is for brisket, they will walk away and say that this is the best bar-beque brisket they’ve ever had.” “I’ve eaten as most of the barbeque joints in town. Some barbeque places are known as the standard by which barbeque is measured. I love good barbeque but I’ve walked away disappointed as I know that mine is so much better. Mr. B’s Barbeque is open Tuesday through Saturday.

recording ten more songs. Willie B. Harris was again credited as back-up singer, and sang lead on two songs. Church, I’m Fully Saved Today; John the Revelator; Trouble Will Soon Be Over; and The Soul Of The Man from this session are on my Dark Was The Night CD. Blind Willie never recorded again, despite the success of his previous releases, and being one of the best-known “Race Artists” Columbia had, and Columbia then pulled all his recordings from store shelves. Blind Willie never received any money from his recordings. Blind Willie and Angelina moved to Beaumont, Texas in 1930, where they lived in poverty, supporting themselves by singing at the Mount Olive Baptist Church while they also continued their street-corner evangelism at The House of Prayer. After their home burned in 1945 and they continued to live in the ruins, Blind Willie died of pneumonia and exposure on Septem-ber 18, 1945.

Although he’s been gone almost 70 years now, Blind Willie Johnson’s music is still with us, both in his own re-mastered CD and in covers by such artists as Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Ry Cooder, Peter Paul and Mary, Rev. Gary Davis, The Soul Stirrers, The Staple Singers, Son House, Taj Mahan, Hot Tuna and countless other artists, as well as movie and TV soundtracks. When the two Voyager spacecraft were launched to travel our Universe and the Gal-axy, a copy of Blind Willie singing Dark Was the Night was one of the tracks on the Voyager Golden Record attached to each, selected by Carl Sagan personally, to travel across the Cosmos and all the Heavens! So I know the nay-sayer who told me there was no blues music in Heaven was wrong. I know there will be blues music in Heaven! I know that Blind Willie Johnson will be sitting at the feet of God whom he served all his life, with Angelina singing at his side, playing his slide guitar blues with his pocket knife slide and singing in his haunting, raspy voice, sing-ing about joy and salvation!
