Pietermaritzburg and the surrounding areas recorded a nearly fi ve

percent increase in the matric results for 2013, making it one of the top three performing districts in the province. This was revealed by KZN Education MEC Peggy Nkonyeni during a media briefi ng at the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC) on Tuesday.

Last year UMgungundlovu district, under which Pietermaritzburg falls, recorded a 75% matric pass rate, but this year improved to 79,6% which ensured that the district moved from last year’s fourth position to third spot. The improvement by the district also achieved by other 11 districts ensured that the province recorded an 83,7% pass rate.

Nkonyeni said it was heartwarming to see the province’s matriculants doing well in what is the largest department in the country. “The total number of Bachelor passes of 47 202 is equal to the entire number of learners who sat for exams in the Western Cape Province, our total pass rate of both Bachelors and Diplomas is over 90 000, that is 10 000 more than the entire Gauteng class of 2013,” said Nkonyeni in illustrating the size of the department.

While KZN schools and districts had performed well in Mathematics and

Science, there were concerns that other subjects were not receiving adequate attention.

“Over the years, we paid more attention in gateway subjects such as Mathematics, Physical Science and Technology and in the process, we seem to have neglected other subjects. The 2013 results show a marginal increase in the pass rate of commerce subjects.”

She told the gathering at the ICC that this year more attention will be paid to subjects such as Business Studies, Accounting, and Economics.

She appealed to those who failed last year’s exams to pursue the options that are available, promising assistance from the department in all districts. Help will come in the form of classes in selected education

centres in each of the 12 districts providing tuition support for learners who would like to sit for supplementary examinations and improve their chances of success. This assistance will also be available to learners who have passed and would like to improve their pass marks.

The MEC issued a stern warning to underperforming schools, promising an

investigation and prompt action against management teams of underachieving schools.

“There is no room at the inn for lethargy and incompetence, people who are a misfi t in our education system must either show their interest to learn to enable themselves or voluntarily leave or we will push them out. They must either ship in or ship out,” the MEC insisted.

Yusuf Mahomed third in country with 10 distinctionsMaritzburg College

star pupil, Yusuf Mahomed leads the

group of local top achievers in the recently released matric exam results. On Monday night it was announced on national television that he had placed third overall in South Africa.

With a total of ten distinctions in his pocket, Mahomed said he had no idea of his fi nal results until he was on stage in Johannesburg during the national awards ceremony.

“I was so shocked and excited at the same time. I have always been an A-student but I really didn’t expect to do as well as I did,” Mohamed said when on his way to the provincial awards ceremony at the Durban ICC yesterday.

Mohamed received distinctions in English, Afrikaans, Life Orientation, Physical Science, Life Sciences, Accounting, Information Technology, Mathematics, Advanced Programme Mathematics, and Mathematics Three.

Proud parents Femida and well

known general practitioner, Dr Naushaad Mahomed, were very happy and excited with his results.

"He works very hard but he leads a very balanced life," said Femida Mahomed.

Yusuf is a keen squash player but he is also intrigued with the stock market. For two years, in 2011 and 2012, he competed in the Johannesburg Stock Exchange Liberty Life Investment Challenge, fi nally winning the

national schools' investment game in 2012.

He then decided to tackle the exchange with real money last year, trading through a stock exchange account opened by his mother. And once again his attention to detail paid off handsomely.

Yusuf intends to study Actuarial Science at the University of Witwatersrand this year.

Crowds gather for results

Anxious matriculants crowded the Raisethorpe Sasol petrol station on Monday night awaiting their results.

“You are not alone and there are so many options and help available” - the

advice given to the class of 2013 by the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) following the release of matric results this week.

Meryl Da Costa, Press Liaison Offi cer of SADAG, said the organisation which usually copes with some 400 calls a day from those needing help, support and referrals, has been fl ooded with calls from anxious matrics, parents, teachers, loved ones and friends.

“We are concerned that parents and even the students have high expectations for their loved ones and themselves. If your teen did fail, let them know that you are there for them and you will support them, that you are in this together”, she said.

She warned parents that their children’s lives were way more important than marks on a piece of paper. For those disappointed in their results there were still many options.

She advised learners who had failed to be proactive. She suggested they check as soon as possible on the procedures re-marking their scripts and fi nd out about registration for supplementary exams. Failing that there were also bridging courses at local colleges and universities.

“The more you know about your options, the better-equipped you are with dealing with any issue. There are thousands of matrics who are in the same boat as you. You are not alone and there are so many options available,” she said.

Anyone needing help can contact SADAG on their national helpline 0800 21 22 23 or 0800 12 13 14 or SMS 31393 and a counsellor will call back.

The Sports Veterans Asso-ciation (SVA) endeav-ours to bestow honour

and recognition to all those sport-ing personalities who made a sig-nifi cant contribution to the welfare of sport in the various commu-nities. And in order to fête these overlooked and accomplished sportspersons, an awards function is being planned to present awards to deserving individuals selected according to prescribed stringent criteria. This function will take place at the Truro Hall on Satur-day 22 March this year.

What was considered by many as a dream has now become a reality. The forthcoming function, as well as the status of the SVA, is a tribute to the foresight, plan-

ning and cooperation of the mem-bers of the organisation and its executive committee.

The SVA has received a tre-mendous fi nancial boost through the very kind sponsorships of Sha-mala Rajah and her son Ashen from ESP Consulting, Trevor Vis-vanathan from Caltex Bird Sanc-tuary, and Hanef Bhamjee from the Action for Southern Africa in

Wales.Kannipan ‘Sailor’ Chetty is

presently working tirelessly in producing another souvenir bro-chure. He acknowledges the wealth of information that has been forwarded to him by various individuals, sporting organisations and clubs.

In respect of the forthcoming function, each of the 130 awardees will receive two invitations for himself/herself and his/her spouse or partner. A letter with further details will be forwarded to each awardee in due course. A very limited number of corporate tables is available and Viddy Naidoo can be contacted for more information on 073 751 6010.

Maritzburg United owners on Mon-day announced the

appointment of Steve Komphela as their new head coach. This comes after the sacking of Clinton Larsen less than three months after he joined the Team of Choice.

Addressing local media at Stay Easy hotel, Maritzburg United Chairman Farook Kado-dia said due to media specula-tions that surfaced last week the club was forced to unveil the new coach before the set date.

“Steve comes with a wealth of experience, having being assistant coach for the national team and also head coach for teams such as

Platinum Stars, Manning Rangers, Dynamos and Free State Stars. We believe he can take the club to new heights and help it in achiev-ing the desired results.”

Komphela signed a two and a half year contract with the Team of Choice, joining the local Pre-mier League side from Free State Stars which performed poorly last

season. “This is an exciting chal-

lenge for me and I’m fully aware it’s not going to be an easy one. It’s a serious and heavy responsibility to be called back to stress avenue but this challenge will be turned to opportunity. The club has respectable and experienced players most of whom I have

had the opportunity of working with before,” said Komphela.

He hopes to turn around the club’s results in six months.

“If I succeed, in six months the team will be where the chairman and the board want it to be,” he promised.

Bryce Moon gets national call up

I would like to start the New Year by welcoming you in 2014 and wishing you

all the best for the year that lies ahead.

I know most of you like to kick off the New Year by mak-ing a couple of resolutions. Well, whatever it is, just remember that your faith will take you far in your decisions.

A few days ago some of you contacted me after learning that the local PSL team, Maritzburg United, had fi red the head coach, Clinton Larsen.

Expected to take over is the for-mer Free State and SAU23 coach, Steve Khompela.

I know most of you want me to comment about this issue, but please allow me to give it a miss this time. United’s management have already issued an offi cial statement about the matter and let us respect that: “It was clear that

Larsen would not achieve his tar-geted objective in his contract of reaching the top eight at the end of the season.”

On a positive note, let me con-gratulate local boy, Woodlands resident and Mamelodi Sundown’s player Bryce Moon for receiving a national call up again. Moon is currently in the training camp with Bafana Bafana gearing up for the African Nations Championships to start on Saturday in Cape Town.

We all know what Moon went through in the past three years but his strong character and faith kept him going and strong. Let us all wish him and the whole team good luck.
