OCTOBER HALF TERM 2013 ISSUE 4

Mister Maker is one of the biggest stars of children’s television at the present time.

Ahead of a trip to Birmingham for CBeebies Live – The Big Band, Primary Times had a

chat with the man behind Mister Maker, Phillip Gallagher.

SPLISH, SPLOSHPAINT POTS -It’s Mister Maker

PT: Hello Phil. Mister Maker is such a memorable character, where did the inspiration for the character come from?

Phil Gallagher: The show started in 2007 and I was extremely proud and excited to be given the part. Those people who know me well all say that Mister Maker’s personality is not a million miles away from mine. I’m the youngest 36 year old around – just like a big kid. I’ve always loved making things from an early age, and now love inspiring ‘mini makers’. When I was a child I totally loved

cupboard, loved how simple it was, and the connection with the viewer. That inspired me.

PT: Mister Maker is famous all over the world. How does it feel playing to huge crowds in places like South Africa?

PG: It’s been hard to put into words! The show has steadily grown and grown. I never cease to be amazed at how popular the show has become. It was an amazing experience playing

in Jakarta in Indonesia. We did a live 30 minute show for the BBC, and 15,000 people turned up to watch. The next Mister Maker series is taking Mister Maker all over the world to places like Brazil,

and, here is an exclusive for Primary Times readers, this time I won’t have my ‘Maker Mobile’ but will instead have a special ‘Maker Case’ a piece of luggage that I can take all around the world with me.

PT: Did you train at Art School or acting college?

PG: As a child I loved drawing and making things, I always had a pad to hand and I was always making things with my granddad. I’ve still kept lots of the things I made with my granddad – things like the googly eyed bugs that I sometimes make on Mister Maker. I did do a degree in television production at Christchurch and then started working for the BBC on radio. I started as a sports reporter on Radio Kent!

PT: You also write scripts for children’s television. What do you prefer – writing or acting?

PG: Ha Ha! I prefer sitting on the fence! I’m lucky that I get to do both, can write scripts and then get to perform them. I’m lucky to have learnt so many different skills I can use.

PT: You also pay Mr Liker Biker in ‘Grandpa in my Pocket’. Do you ride a bike in real life?

PG: Well spotted! Yes, I’ve always enjoyed bike riding. Mr Liker Biker is actually based on my dad Derek. He looks just like my dad who has always been a keen cyclist. In fact, he still owns the same bike he had when I was a child. I just love Grandpa in my Pocket. It is a beautiful show with great stories. I’m proud to be part of such a great show and cast.

PT: Back to Mister Maker. The character is a fantastic inspiration for young artists. Who was your art inspiration?

PG: I loved the Broom cupboard on CBBC, and Tony Hart was a huge inspiration too. I still watch Tony Hart re-runs, he was incredibly skilled and had a great connection with the audience. I also loved Blue Peter, especially when they made things with sticky back plastic.

5OCTOBER HALF TERM 2013 ISSUE

PT: Did you ever send Artwork into a television programme when you were young?

PG: I didn’t send any artwork to a television programme, but one of my proudest moments when I was young did involve one of my drawings. I’m a huge football fan and support Gillingham, but I also supported West Ham and my hero was Tony Cottee. I sent him a picture of himself that I had drawn and was so proud when he returned it to me with a note saying ‘this is a great picture of me. ‘ He now works as a presenter on Sky Sports and I would love to see if he still remembers the picture – I’ve still got it.

PT: You’re quite a panto star. Have you got a favourite role, and are you in panto this year?

PG: I absolutely love panto. It really makes Christmas special for me. This year I’m in Jack and the Beanstalk in Canterbury. This is very special for me as I’ll be back in Kent where I grew up. My personal favourite pantomime was ‘Strictly Cinderella’, which was one of the traditional CBeebies panto’s. I had the honour of being one of the Ugly Sisters, the other sister being Justin Fletcher who plays Mr Tumble. I was Maker Raina and Justin was Tumblina. We had amazing costumes (I had paint splashes and Justin had Mr Tumble style dots all over his dress), and it was just so much fun as I am very good friends with Justin so it was good to be able to work together. Every year I seem to get more and more custard pies aimed at me though….

PT: You have a new live show coming up, CBeebies – The Big Band. Can you tell me a little bit about the show and your role in it?

PG: I am extremely excited about the show. I did an arena tour in 2012 and it was one of the best experiences of my life. I love working with all my great CBeebies friends on a big stage. This year, in ‘The Big Band’ show we have got the Zingzillas and Rastamouse offering some great musical moments. We’ve also

and a very skilled musician too, so this is going to be great to see. I’m really looking forward to seeing all my CBeebies friends and fans when we head to Birmingham early next year!

13 SPOOKY, FUN FACTS ABOUT HALLOWEEN

“Halloween” is short for “Hallows’ Eve” or “Hallows’ Evening,” which was the evening before All Hallows’

(sanctifi ed or holy) Day or Hallowmas on November 1

Trick-or-treating harks back to the Middle Ages and All

Souls’ Day, when poor people in Britain would beg for soul

cakes, a sweet-bread treat, and pray for dead relatives in return.

Trick-or-treating evolved from the ancient Celtic tradition of putting out treats and food to placate spirits who roamed the streets at Samhain, a

sacred festival that marked the end of the Celtic calendar year.

The fi rst Jack O’Lanterns were not made from Pumpkins, but were

actually made from turnips!

The largest pumpkin ever measured was grown by Norm Craven, who broke the world record in 1993 with a 836 lb. pumpkin.

Halloween has variously been called All

Hallows’ Eve, Witches Night, Lamswool, Snap-

Apple Night, Samhaim, and Summer’s End

Halloween was infl uenced by the ancient Roman festival Pomona, which celebrated the harvest goddess of the same name. Many Halloween

customs and games that feature apples (such as bobbing for apples), and nuts, date from this time. In fact, in the past, Halloween has been called San-

Apple Night and Nutcrack Night

Ireland is typically believed to be the birthplace of Halloween.

OCTOBER HALF TERM 2013 ISSUE 8

Chocolate makes up about three-quarters of a

trick-or-treater’s loot, according to the National

Confectioners Association.

About 99% of all pumpkins sold are used as lanterns for Halloween.

The correct spelling of Halloween is actually Hallowe’en.

Orange and black are traditional Halloween colours. Orange represents Harvest, black represents darkness.

To meet a witch, put your clothes on inside

out and walk backwards on Halloween night.

18 OCTOBER HALF TERM 2013 ISSUE

GARDENING, VEGGIES AND MUSIC - FIVE MINUTES WITH MR BLOOM

Exciting news. Mr Bloom and his garden full of talking veggies are coming to the Midlands very soon with a new BBC live show. Primary

Times managed to grab fi ve minutes with Ben Faulks, the man behind Mr Bloom, to talk all things Bloom related.

I started out doing a one man show under the name of Jonathan Pram, this was

I then moved into street theatre with Plunge Boom and wrote a show called ‘Vegetable Nannies’. I played a gardener taking his vegetables out for a day, and pushed a big old pram full of vegetables wearing nappies and with googly eyes. I guess this was the start of Mr Bloom. When I then had my own children, I didn’t want to travel around so much to work so I took the idea of Mr Bloom to the BBC. They liked it and decided to develop it into a show.

The Veggies in Mr Bloom each have their own personality, which is based on how they look and their properties. You get something like Raymond the Butternut Squash who is BIG, with a big voice and personality, but then Margaret the Cabbage is shy and hides behind her leaves. People sometimes ask if the veggies are based on real people, but it is

I am surprised and very happy by how successful Mr Bloom is. You always hope that people will like and enjoy the show, but you never really know what to expect. I enjoyed doing the live learning roadshows because you get to see the audience response up close.

I don’t have a favourite Veggie from the show, as all parents know you shouldn’t have a favourite child, but I do identify most with Colin. He is full of energy and is always rushing around, and I guess I’m a bit like that too!

I would encourage parents to get their children interested in gardening. A big part of this is getting outside, rolling up the sleeves and getting involved in nature. It’s great if parents do stuff like gardening with their children, you can encourage them and foster an interest through your enthusiasm.

I’m a keen musician, and music is an important part of my work. At school and college I always played in rock bands, and then when I moved into shows and theatre I used music a lot. I guess that music will be making an appearance in the new CBeebies show, which is titled ‘The Big Band’.

show. It’s a real honour to get an invitation to join the team and be a part of it. I’m really looking forward to getting out there with Bloom and the other CBeebies characters, bringing the TV shows to life. It should be very exciting!

Mr Bloom is a great character and I want to develop him further, but I am also working on new shows and new ideas which it would be great to develop further. So, watch this space….
