Psychology Department

The students of Psychology attended “Manosrujana”, a workshop organized by the Department of Psychology, Jain University, Bangalore on 27 April 2013. Raina, Manisha, Radhika, Satshya, Rashmi, Deepthi, Marissa and Refana Participated in the Fest and Workshop.It began with a competition, “Movers and Shapers” where a group had to represent a disorder in the form of a dance and the students led by Raina D’Mello bagged the second place.

Another event, “I am the One” was where a participant had to impersonate a psychologist and contend that their theory was still relevant in the present age and Satshya Tharien bagged the first place.The events were followed by two workshops – “Dance as a Tool for Therapy” and “Innovations in the Teaching-Learning Process”, followed by a panel discussion on “Nurturing Creativity: Key to Success in the current Socio-Cultural Scenario”.

The Department had organized Fresher’s day programme on 15-06-2013. It was more of welcoming the new comers and a get together of all psychology students. Hadley and Manisha of third BA were the organisers of the show. Introductions, Icebreaking sessions, games and interaction made the fresher’s feel at home and gave them the essence of belongingness and familiarity.

On 20th June 2013, nine Psychology students from third year along with the HOD, Ms Shalini Aiyappa attended a one day seminar organized by Yenepoya University, Department of Psychiatry on “Alcohol and Substance Abuse Disorders”. The resource persons for this workshop were Dr. Vivek Benegal from NIMHANS, Dr. P.V Bandari and Dr. Suresh Kumar from PsyMed Hospital

Workshop on Alcohol and Substance Abuse Disorders

The workshop was conducted in three sessions which emphasized on the recent advancements regarding addictions, drugs and alcohol dependency and neurobiological aspects as well as the consequences of the use of cannabis. The seminar successfully gave an insight into the various health hazards linked with addictions and also emphasized on the recent advancement in the medical field.

Students attended a workshop on life skills and neurolinguistic programming organized by St. Agnes College for Post Graduate studies and Research. Mrs Shilpa Somanathan, renowned motivational speaker and life coach from Bangalore delivered expert lecture and conducted the whole session. The entire session, was focused on improving knowledge, attitude and various skills to achieve success in any field. Workshop was well structured and conducted in live and interactive session. She further spoke about building communicative and self-management skills.

Workshop on Life Skills and Neurolingustic programme

During the semester vacation, the students from third year Psychology, underwent 14 days of clinical observation and Training at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital, Derlakatte. Guided by the HOD of the department of Psychiatry Dr. V.V Mohan Chandra, the students got an opportunity to go on rounds and interact with the patients in the psychiatry wards. During their posting, the students were exposed to ECT on the patients, case studies, case history taking as well as psychological tests. The 14 rigorous days spent at the hospital were indeed helpful in strengthening the roots of the students, who wish to pursue clinical psychology as a career ahead.

Experiencing Clinical Exposure in Yenepoya

Nine Students of the Department of Psychology of St Aloysius College (Hadley, Raina, Manisha, Ameena, Radhika, Pushyarag, Nanditha, Deepthi and Satshya) participated for the inter-collegiate level fest and half day workshop on flow psychology held on 05 DEC 2013 in Roshni Nilaya and won the overall’s trophy.  Hadley bagged the first place for caption writing competition; Raina, Ameena Pushyarag and Deepthi bagged the first place for the dance competition named ripples; Satshya got the second place for the event where the participants had to impersonate a psychologist.

The department of psychology saw a combustion of a combination of energy and knowledge as the first and second year students enthusiastically took part in the “Treasure Hunt” organised for them by the final year students of psychology on the 19th of December, 2012. Eleven teams fought to the finish to win their treasure. These teams faced challenges at every stage with regard to their knowledge of phobias, mental disorders, contributions of psychologists, also their memory and concentration skills being put to test. The clues to the treasure were spread across the campus with the final destination being department of psychology. The students thoroughly enjoyed the treasure hunt and look forward to more events in the forthcoming year.

Hunters on Move

The students of The Department of Psychology celebrated Christmas on the 21st of December, Saturday- complete with presents, carols and Santa Claus! As has been the tradition each year, the students of each year played the ‘Secret Santa’ game and exchanged their presents on the day of the celebration.The Department of Psychology put on a festive look with all the decorations put up by the students of the Final Year. The one hour program began with carol singing by the students, followed by a series of Christmas wishes and messages too. Throughout, the presence of Santa Claus enhanced the overall feeling of joy and celebration and topped the festive mood. The small yet warm celebration culminated with the students giving gifts to their ‘Secret Friends’ and receiving gifts from their ‘Secret Santa’s’. It was all a flurry of colour, excitement and warmth that will be earnestly looked forward to by all the members of the department again.
