In addition to the above, the Centre for English Language Learning (CELL) is accredited by the British Council for the quality of its teaching. The British Council is a professional organisation that is responsible for Accreditation UK, a quality assurance scheme for schools, colleges and universities that offer courses in English as a foreign language. The initial assessment process and external inspections every five years assures students that all accredited centres meet or exceed the agreed quality standards in management, resources and environment, teaching, welfare and accommodation including homestay. In June 2012 the Centre was inspected for the second time and exceeded the requirements in six areas including teaching and learning, management and facilities.

Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Bodies – working definitionsProfessional bodies are those that accredit programmes to enable graduates to become members of a professional body. Mostly these are a form of kite mark or quality mark looked for by employers. One or two e.g. the British Psychological Society may facilitate a graduate eventually entering a named profession with a regulatory body such as the Health Care Professional Council. Some may also hold a voluntary register.

Statutory bodies with regulatory function i.e. PSRB approval required to enable graduates to register and enter a specific profession such as nursing (Nursing and Midwifery Council). These are all established by Acts of Parliament.

There are also bodies that accredit programmes as suitable for preparing graduates but are not professional bodies i.e. have no membership or registration.

The main purpose of the review was to investigate the higher education provided by the university and to make judgements as to whether or not its academic standards and quality meet UK expectations. These expectations are the statements in the UK Quality Code for Higher Education setting out what all UK higher education providers expect of themselves and of each other, and what the general public can therefore expect of them.

In summary, all 4 expectations were met with one attracting a commendation:•The setting and maintenance of the threshold academic standards of awards at the provider meet UK expectations•The quality of student learning opportunities at the provider meets UK expectations.•The quality of the information produced by the provider about its provision meets UK expectations.•The enhancement of student learning opportunities at the provider was commended.

Moreover, four areas of good practice were identified alongside four helpful recommendations and two affirmations.
