Thank you for purchasing Yamaha PSG-01S. This product is a USB microphone/speaker unit to be connected to a computer with the USB cable for use as its audio terminal. Before operating this unit, please read this manual carefully.

■CommunicationYou can use this unit as a microphone speaker for Skype. Incorporating this unit as the microphone/speaker into the Skype system provides a smoother conversation experience for both listeners and talkers.

■ListeningYou can use this unit as a stereo speaker. Two small high-efficiency speakers enable stereo playback for broadband audio signals.

■RecordingYou can use this unit as a recording microphone. Four unidirectional microphones enable high-quality recording suited for various using scenes.

By standing this unit, you can use this unit as a microphone speaker for Skype. This state is called "Active style".

To use this unit with Skype, you need to carry out the following setup procedure. For further information, refer to "Quick Start Guide" supplied with this unit.

1 Connect the PC/Mac to the Internet.

2 Connect this unit to the PC/Mac using the supplied USB cable.

3 Install Skype.

4 Install the PSG-01S Controller and then run the PSG-01S Controller.

5 On Skype, permit access from the PSG-01S Controller.

When appears in the task tray/menu bar, you cannot access Skype from the PSG-01S Controller. To use this unit with Skype, permit access from the PSG-01S Controller on Skype.

1 Stand this unit on a flat surface.

yThis unit rings the Style-shift sound (chimes) when the installation style is changed. If the Style-shift sound does not ring or if the error sounds (buzzer sounds) are output, reinstall this unit properly.

2 Specify a phone number to call.

By laying down this unit, you can use this unit as a stereo speaker. This state is called "Relax style".

1 Connect this unit to the PC/Mac using the supplied USB cable.

To use this unit with a Mac, you need to configure the sound settings. For details, refer to "Using in the Listening/Recording mode" (page 17).

2 Lay down this unit.

This unit can be used as a stereo speaker.

If you cannot hear any sounds from this unit's speakers, this unit may not be selected as a sound playback device on your PC/Mac. Refer to "Checking the Connection" (page 14).

• This unit rings the style-shift sound (chimes) when the installation style is changed. If the Style-shift sound does not ring or if the error sounds (buzzer sounds) are output, reinstall this unit properly.

• If you receive a Skype call while this unit is used as a stereo speaker, this unit gives priority to the Skype call. For information about how to handle a Skype call, refer to "Communication" (page 5).

While a Skype call is not active, you can use this unit as a recording microphone by standing this unit (Active style) and pressing REC MIC.

1 Connect this unit to the PC/Mac using the supplied USB cable.

To use this unit with a Mac, you need to configure the sound settings. For details, refer to "Using in the Listening/Recording mode" (page 17).

2 Stand this unit on a flat surface.

3 Press (REC MIC).This unit can be used as a recording microphone.

4 Press (REC MIC).The recording microphone mode is deactivated.

If you cannot record sounds using this unit's microphones, this unit may not be selected as a sound recording device on your PC/Mac. Refer to "Checking the Connection" (page 14).

By using the PGS-01S Controller, you can adjust the unit's settings which cannot be controlled with key operations.When using this unit as a microphone speaker for Skype, you need to run the PSG-01S Controller in advance.In this section, indicates information for Windows users and indicates information for Mac OS users.

This section explains about the basic operations of the PSG-01S Controller.

1 Connect this unit to the PC using the supplied USB cable.

The icon displayed in the task tray switches to .

• Do not connect more than one microphone speaker (including this unit) to the PC at the same time.

• When appears in the task tray, you cannot access Skype from the PSG-01S Controller. To use this unit with Skype, permit access from the PSG-01S Controller on Skype

( appears in the task tray).

• In the case that does not appear after this unit is connected to the computer, select [Start] - [All Programs] - [Yamaha PSG-01S] - [PSG-01S Controller] to start the PSG-01S Controller.

• To start the PSG-01S Controller on PC start-up, click and then select "Start PSG-01S Controller on PC

start-up".

2 Click in the task tray and then select "View PSG-01S Controller".The "PSG-01S Controller" screen appears.

3 Configure the settings.Configure the settings of this unit according to the use environment.

To quit the PSG-01S ControllerFollow the procedure below to quit the PSG-01S Controller.

• Click in the task tray and then select "Exit".The PSG-01S Controller exits.

3 Configure the settings.Configure the settings of this unit according to the use environment.

To quit the PSG-01S ControllerFollow the procedure below to quit the PSG-01S Controller.

• From the PSG-01S Controller menu bar, select [PSG-01S Controller] - [Quit PSG-01S Controller]. The PSG-01S Controller exits.

In this section, Windows 7 is used as an example.

■Home ( ) tab

1 Shows the status of this unit.

If this unit is installed incorrectly, "INVALID" is displayed. In this case, the microphones and speakers of this unit are automatically muted. The speaker mute is disabled only when a dialing tone or a ringtone of a Skype call sounds.

2 Adjusts the speaker volume of this unit.

3 Starts Skype or the specified application. For details, refer to "Configuring SHORTCUT" (page 11).

■Audio ( ) tab

1 Adjusts the microphone sensitivity of this unit.

2 Enables or disables the microphone attenuator for recording microphone.

3 Shows the audio input/output status of this unit.

1 Selects a style applied to this unit regardless of how this unit is installed.

2 Enable or disable the style-shift sounds.

yIf you select "OFF", the error sounds are also disabled.

3 Selects a function used when this unit is shaken. For details, refer to "Configuring the shake function" (page 11).

4 Switches the USB bandwidth usage. For details, refer to "Switching the USB bandwidth usage" (page 11).

■Maintenance ( ) tab

1 Updates the firmware of this unit. For details, refer to "Using the Latest Features" (page 12).

2 Resets the settings of this unit.

Note the followings before resetting this unit.

• The reset operation will change all the settings to the default value (if available).

• You cannot restore the settings to the previous status after the reset operation.

3 Shows this manual.

4 Shows the version information of the firmware of this unit and the PSG-01S Controller.

Follow the procedure below to select an application to be started by clicking "Go" in "SHORTCUT".

1 In the PSG-01S Controller screen, click the Home tab.

2 In "SHORTCUT", select "Select application".

3 Select the desired application and then click "Open".

Follow the procedure below to select a function to be activated when this unit is shaken.

1 In the PSG-01S Controller screen, click the General setting tab.

2 In “Shake”, select a function to be assigned.

Open/close PSG-01S Controller:Select this if you want to open or close the PSG-01S Controller

Maximize audio level:Select this if you want to set the volume to the maximum.

OFF:Select this if you do not use the shake function.

■When shaking this unitJiggle this unit up and down to activate the selected function. Be careful not to remove the USB cable during shaking.

Follow the procedure below to switch the USB bandwidth usage. This unit restarts automatically when you change this setting.

1 In the PSG-01S Controller screen, click the General setting tab.

2 In "Bandwidth usage", select "Standard (stereo)" or "Narrow band (monaural)".If this unit is connected to a PC/Mac conjunction with other USB devices such as Web camera, this unit may operate abnormally. In this case, select "Narrow band (monaural)".

• While this unit is operating in a narrow band, it plays back audio in monaural even in "Relax style".

• You cannot switch the USB bandwidth usage during a Skype call.

• In case that you cannot adjust the speaker volume or microphone sensitivity after switching the USB bandwidth usage, disconnect the USB cable and reconnect it.

To uninstall the PSG-01S Controller from the PC, select [Start] - [All Programs] - [Yamaha PSG-01S] - [Uninstall PSG-01S Controller].When you use Windows 7 or Windows Vista, a warning message regarding uninstallation may appear. Click "Allow" to continue the uninstallation because Yamaha has already confirmed the operation.

To uninstall the PSG-01S controller, log on with the user account used for setup.

To uninstall the PSG-01S Controller from the Mac, select [Go] - [Applications] from the Finder menu bar and then drag the "Yamaha PSG-01S" folder to the trash icon.

To uninstall the PSG-01S controller, log on as a user with the Administrator rights.

You can download the firmware (program to control the functions of this unit) to use the latest features.In this section, indicates information for Windows users and indicates information for Mac OS users.

In this section, Windows 7 is used as an example.

• Firmware update is available only if the PC/Mac connecting to this unit is connected to the Internet. To update the firmware without connection to the Internet, follow "Updating the firmware using a local file" (page 13).

• Once the firmware update is started, do not perform any other operation until the update operation is completed. If the update operation is interrupted, this unit may become unusable, in which case you need to return this unit to the factory for repairs.

• Do not remove the USB cable or LAN cable during the firmware update. Otherwise, this unit could become unusable, in which case you need to return this unit to the factory for repairs.

1 In the PSG-01S Controller screen, click the Maintenance tab.

2 In "Firmware update", click "Confirm".The license agreement screen appears.

3 Read the contents of license agreement carefully, select "Accept all terms of the license agreement" and then click "OK".

The firmware update screen appears.

4 Select "Download from the network" and then click "Start".

The firmware version confirmation screen appears.

5 Check the latest firmware version and then click "OK".The firmware update starts.

To specify the firmware download URLThis feature is useful in managing the firmware versions of multiple units.

1 In the firmware update screen, click "Settings".The setting screen appears.

2 Enter the URL from which to download the firmware.

yYou can restore the default URL by clicking "Default".

3 Click "OK".The firmware download URL is set.

If the PC/Mac connecting to the PSG-01S cannot be connected to the Internet, follow the procedure below to update the firmware manually using a local file.

• Once the firmware update is started, do not perform any other operation until the update operation is completed. If the update operation is interrupted, this unit may become unusable, in which case you need to return this unit to the factory for repairs.

• Do not remove the USB cable during the firmware update. Otherwise, this unit could become unusable, in which case you need to return this unit to the factory for repairs.

1 In the PSG-01S Controller screen, click the Maintenance tab.

2 Click "Confirm" of "Firmware update".The license agreement screen appears.

3 Read the contents of license agreement carefully, select "Accept all terms of the license agreement", and then click "OK".The firmware update screen appears.

4 Select "Specify a local file" and then click "Start".The file selection screen appears.

5 Select the firmware file and then click "Open".The firmware version confirmation screen appears.

6 Check the latest firmware version and then click "OK" to start the firmware update.The firmware update starts.

You can check the firmware release note by clicking "Release note" in the firmware update screen.

Q2: Have a communication problem

Problem Cause Remedy

The audio from the other unit cannot be heard.

The speakers are muted on this unit. Turn off the speaker mute function.

The microphone is muted on the other unit. –

The speaker volume is set to the minimum on this unit.

This unit is not selected in the Audio settings of Skype.

• Place objects with high sound absorbance in the room other than in front of the microphones.

• Avoid talking at a loud voice to reduce reverberations.

There is a problem with the equipment configuration on another unit.

The unit generates noises. A device that interferes with this unit is placed near this unit.

Move this unit away from the device.

The audio is cracking. The speaker volume is too high. Turn the speaker volume down.

This unit does not work. This unit is not recognized by the PC/Mac. • (When using Windows) If you see "?" or "!" in the device manager, delete the device and then reconnect the USB cable of this unit.

• (When using Mac) Reconnect the USB cable of this unit.

"INVALID" is displayed in the Home tab of the PSG-01S Controller.

This unit is installed incorrectly. Install this unit correctly. (page 5)

Q3: Have a recording/playback problem

Cannot record any sounds. This unit is not selected in the Audio device settings of the PC/Mac.

Select this unit.

The microphone is muted on this unit. Turn off the microphone mute function on this unit.

Cannot record any sounds when holding this unit.

This unit is not in the Active style. Set "Fix style" to "Active style" in the PSG-01S Controller.

The recording sounds are too loud or cracking.

The microphone attenuator function is turned off. Set "Attenuator" to "ON" in the PSG-01S Controller.

The recording sounds are too small.

The microphone attenuator function is turned on. Set "Attenuator" to "OFF" in the PSG-01S Controller.

This unit does not output playback sounds.

This unit is not selected in the Audio device settings of the PC/Mac.

Select this unit.

REC MIC has been pressed. Press REC MIC again.

The speakers are muted on this unit. Turn off the speaker mute function on this unit.

"INVALID" is displayed in the Home tab of the PSG-01S Controller.
