Extraction BE.KFA14L1
01/10/2014
• 1 vacuum tank installed in ~1970• 16 magnets (4 per ring) designed for 800 MeV
beam deflection• No spare
All magnets have been refurbished in 2000 for the 1.4 GeV upgrade. The poor quality glued original ferrite blocks have been replaced by C shaped ones of 8C11 type.

Extraction BE.KFA14L1
01/10/2014
• 1 generator per ring supplies for magnets in parallel (magnets are in short-circuit mode)
• PFL made of 4×25 W SF6 cables in //• Transmission cables same type as PFL• Maximum design voltage 60 kV (current
9600 A in thyratron given for 8 kA)• Pulse length ~1600 ns (fixed)• Installed in 2000

Transfer BT.KFA10
01/10/2014
• 1 vacuum tank installed in ~1970• 4 magnets (2 per ring 2&3) designed for 800 MeV
beam deflection• Glued ferrite C cores of unknown type (could be
8C1, 4L1 or 4H1)• No spare

Transfer BT.KFA10
01/10/2014
• 1 generator per ring supplies two magnets in parallel (magnets are in short-circuit mode)
• PFL made of 4×25 W SF6 cables in //• Transmission cables same type as PFL• Maximum design voltage 60 kV (current
9600 A in thyratron given for 8 kA max)• Pulse length ~1600 ns (fixed)• Installed in 1999
LIU-PS ABT review 8
Transfer BT2.KFA20
01/10/2014
• 1 vacuum tank refurbished in 2000• 2 magnets designed for 800 MeV beam deflection
(same as BT.KFA10 ones)• 1 fully operational spare exists• Ferrite type is CMD5005
LIU-PS ABT review 9
Transfer BT2.KFA20
01/10/2014
• 1 generator (magnets are charged with the PFL)
• PFL made of 4×25 W SF6 cables in //• Transmission cables same type as PFL• Maximum design voltage 37 kV (magnet
breakdown if higher)• Pulse length ~3000 ns (fixed)

SpecificationsBeam energy increase from 1.4 GeV to 2 GeV.
No other modification required. Is it still right?
What does it mean?
Magnet currents have to be increased by 30 % and consequently PFL voltages.
(Note: it’s 46 % more than the original specification at 800 MeV)

Work to be done: BE.KFA14L11. Measure the kick linearity from present operating voltage 42.5 kV to the required
55 kV . (to be done on similar magnets installed in modified 2L1 tank in B867)
The field in the ferrite of the end cells is expected to be 10 % higher than the saturating field. This measurement will impact tasks 4 & 5.
Problem: the test generator is not operational yet in cage SAL5.
2. Make CATIA 3D models and 2D drawings of the present vacuum tank, magnets, connection boxes.
Job given to EN-MME and expected to be finished end of October 2014
3. Study and modify existing magnet design to increase the ferrite cross sectional area in order to avoid saturation.
Not started yet
4. Upgrade/update drawings and build a spare tank equipped with new magnets, test it in B867 and install it in the PSB.
Not started yet (installation not necessary if kick linearity of present tank ok)
5. Refurbish the old tank to have a full spare
Can only start after LS2 (Not necessary if kick linearity ok)

Work to be done: BT.KFA101. Make CATIA 3D models and 2D drawings of the present vacuum tank, magnets,
connection boxes.
Job given to EN-MME and expected to be finished end of February 2015
2. Build a spare tank equipped with new magnets (with new ferrite blocks), test it in B867 and install it in the PSB
Not started yet
3. Refurbish the old tank to have a full spare
Can only start after LS2

Work to be done: BT2.KFA20
No change has been foreseen for this kicker.
It has to be noted that voltage conditioning will be necessary in the future.
In case of magnet breakdown problems, a system configuration like BT.KFA10 will have to be adopted.
01/10/2014
Present operation voltage is 28 kV. At 2 GeV, the required voltage will be 36.4 kV, near the maximum of 37 kV.

Planning (BE.KFA14L1)1. Measure the kick linearity of extraction magnets Problem: the test generator is not operational
yet in cage SAL5. Must be done before the end of the year.
-FPS has still to connect transmission cables.
-EC has to terminate cabling work and test PDC (or use PS type Power Control to save time).
2. Make CATIA 3D models and 2D drawings of the present vacuum tank, magnets, connection boxes.
Job given to EN-MME and expected to be finished end of October 2014.
3. Check drawings from MME. Study and modify existing magnet design to increase the ferrite cross sectional area in order to avoid saturation.
Not started yet. Must be finished by mid 2015 in order to redesign the tank.
4. Upgrade/update drawings (discussion with TE/VSC needed) and build a spare tank equipped with new magnets, test it in B867 and install it in the PSB.
Not started yet .
All drawings must be available end of 2015.
Production must start in 2015 and all components must be at Cern by end 2016.
Magnet and tank assembly up to mid 2017.
Tests from mid 2017 to mid 2018.
5. Installation in PSB: from mid 2018 to mid 2019
6. Refurbish the old tank to have a full spare
Can only start after LS2

Budget and Manpower Are resources sufficient?
The budget looks ok to FPS.
The manpower requirements have been estimated assuming that people with experience are used. As the same people are involved in many other FPS projects and maintenance tasks, it will not be possible to achieve all the tasks in parallel and delays must be expected.
