    THE

    Hebrew

    text

    of

    this

    Book

    of

    Psalms

    is

    strictly

    according

    to

    Ilahn.

    The

    arrangement

    in verse or

    paral

    lelism

    is

    that of

    Rosenm

    tiller,

    from

    which

    a

    very

    few

    variations

    have been

    made

    ;

    the

    translation favored

    these

    changes,

    and

    it

    is believed

    that

    none of them are

    in

    consistent

    with the

    rhythmical

    structure

    of the Hebrew

    verse.

    The

    English

    text

    is the

    common version in

    every

    respect, except

    the

    use of

    capitals

    at the commencement

    of

    the verses.

    The

    Hebrew

    and

    English

    are so ar

    ranged

    that the

    corresponding

    members

    stand

    opposite

    each

    other.

    The

    very

    few

    instances

    in

    which

    the idioms

    of

    the

    two

    languages

    prevented

    this

    arrangement

    are

    designated

    by

    braces

    enclosing

    the

    translation.

    The

    titles

    of

    the

    Psalms,

    concerning

    the

    import

    of

    which

    critics

    are not

    agreed,

    have been

    retained

    in

    IV PREFACE.

    smaller

    type.

    These

    titles

    or

    inscriptions

    are

    very

    an

    cient,

    are

    usually

    found

    printed

    in

    Hebrew

    Bibles

    and

    numbered

with the verses of the Psalm

    to

    which

    they

    belong,

    and are also

    retained

    in

    many

    translations

    ;

    but

    as

    they

    are

    not

    of

    equal

    authority

    with

    the

    text,

    and

    as some of

    them

    are

    generally

    thought

    to be

    incorrect,

    there

    seems

    to be

    sufficient reason

    for

    excluding

    them

    from the

    numerical

    designation

    as

    verses.
