About the Company FOXOLUTION (Fox) has been supplying on-site O2 concentrators to industry since 2003. FOX’s intellectual

property, expertise and know-how is founded upon the Gas Mixing Technology and Gas Separation Technology developed by Festo (Pty) Ltd in the late 90’s. The technology is now owned by Foxolution as part of a technology transfer agreement. Based on this expertise and decades spent in the gas industry, FOX can provide unique

solutions when it comes to the on-site supply of gas to industry. It is also able to extend its offer to include the servicing, refurbishment and maintenance of all brands and sizes of O2 generating plants.

PSA Technology

Since the 1960’s and the advent of the “heatless dryer” as patented by Skarstrom, Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) technology has gained widespread commercial acceptance as the technology of choice for bulk gas separation. It is a particularly cost-effective and energy-efficient technology2 – especially for the on-site manufacture

of O2.

The essential requirement for the PSA adsorption process, is an adsorbent that adsorbs N2 in preference to O2 from air, allowing the separated O2 to be used for process.

Typically, clean, dry compressed air to ISO 8573-1: Class 1.4.1. (or better), is fed, in sequentially-timed increments, into the base of two opposing pressure vessels, each filled with ZMS – the adsorbent. Whilst the one vessel is pressurizing, the other bed is depressurizing and in so doing, “desorbing” the N2 to atmosphere (i.e. the N2 that was “adsorbed” from the previous cycle). The vessel that is being pressurized “adsorbing N2” allows the O2, or “raffinate” to flow out of the top of the vessel to process. The size of the PSA system is directly proportional to the quantity of O2 required. FOX’s PSA plant output ranges in size from a few kg per hour (FOX FX-A series) right up to thousands of kilograms per day (FOX FX-E series). PSA technology has rapidly gained in popularity and acceptance in industry as the preferred “green technology” - not to mention safety, in that PSA O2 is produced in real time opposed to tons of hazardous liquid O2 (LOx) that needs to be stored on site if one goes the traditional cryogenic route.

2 See EIGA Doc. 113/11/E, Rev. IGC Doc. 113/03/E, p. 2 “Typically, to produce one cubic metre of

nitrogen or oxygen in a cryogenic air separation unit requires approx. 1 kWh/m3 while in a non-cryogenic on-site unit it requires approx. 0.5 kWh/m3. The same gas delivered in a 50-litre cylinder requires approx. 2.5 kWh/m3 gas including production, filling and transportation, which indicates that the transportation of gas cylinders uses more energy than the actual production”.

Advantages - FOX FX-A Series of O2 Concentrators

Low energy consumption (± 1.0 kWh/kg O2 @ 350 kPa(g))3.

Green O2 – i.e. no particulate emissions or emissions of SOx / NOx / CO /

CO2 or other gaseous pollutants associated with LOx deliveries.

Produces O2 at site, on demand, in real time.

No hazardous high-pressure compressed O2 storage required.

No hazardous LOx storage required.

Low maintenance cost – function check every 8000 hours4/ once per

year.

Able to integrate into existing control systems.

Minimal startup and shutdown time.

Interactive Human Machine Interface (HMI) modelled on smart-phone

technology for ease of use.

Category 0 Emergency Stop to IEC 60204-1: 2016-Part 1.

Designed for a SIL 2 (safety integrity level) to minimize risk.

Remote monitoring.

Applications

Typical applications include:

CIL gold processing plants Platinum processing plants Aquaculture Wastewater treatment Ozone generating plants Combustion

3 The specific energy requirement is dependent to the required process pressure. 4 Limited to a detailed inspection of the valves.

Adsorbent Beds of The Future

FOX provides a guard bed on the air inlet side as standard.

The purpose of the guard bed is to protect the molecular

sieve from loading with moisture should the refrigerated

dryer malfunction.

The molecular sieve has an affinity for adsorbing N2, but

unfortunately, it has an even greater affinity for moisture –

which, once loaded onto the sieve, renders it useless for

adsorbing N2. Depending on the level of moisture content in

the feed air, it is not impossible to seriously impair the

sieve’s ability to adsorb N2 in just a few hours.

Sieve replacement is expensive – not to mention the down

time. Typically, an ISO 8573-1: Class 1.4.1 air quality is

required, but even this relatively tight moisture specification,

gradually sees the sieve load with moisture over time.

The guard bed is, in essence an integrated desiccant dryer,

providing an ISO 8573-1: CLASS 1.3.1 air quality, or better,

along with an extended bed life and other tangible benefits

– especially when it comes to tonnage plant.

Access your PSA from anywhere

From start-up to shut-down, from pressure

to O2 purity. The FX-A series can be fitted

with a ‘real-time’ monitoring system,

allowing you to control your system

remotely.

Connected via Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable; The FX-A can be as close as your mobile phone, allowing you to keep a close

eye on your system. Programed to notify you by SMS should any alarms be triggered, giving you a system with

increased safety and real-time monitoring.

Carbon Footprint

A carbon footprint may loosely be defined as the summation of the total greenhouse gas emissions produced directly and indirectly by

an organization or company. The footprint is then calculated and reported over a 12-month period. With the FX-A series of O2

concentrators which only require ± 1.0 kWh for every kg of O2 produced at point of use, the FOX solution is a readily-available

environmentally-friendly alternative.

According to EIGA, direct emissions, such as

deliveries of O2 in cylinders, reportedly more than

double the carbon footprint when compared to

concentrator O2 produced on-site5.

Oxides of nitrogen, sulfur emissions, soot and the

like that emanate from internal combustion /

diesel-fueled road tankers, not to mention the CO2

footprint of oil changeouts, tyres, wash bays and

so forth, all contribute towards greenhouse gas

emissions.

Funneling down, one can also add the CO2

footprint of extracting the crude and the refining

thereof, transportation of the product from the

refinery to bulk storage / service stations etc.

5 (Ref. EIGA Doc. 113/11/E, Rev. IGC Doc. 113/03/E, p. 2). The pie chart reflects the CO2 footprint

of LOx delivered by a 20T road tanker within a 35 km radius of a LOx plant. The other consideration is that the road tanker will only drop ±2.5T of LOx (usually 2 x drops per month) at a site that would otherwise utilize a FX-A Series concentrator for its O2 needs.

Notes:

1. FOXOLUTION PSA O2 Concentrators produce O2 @ 93 v/v% ± 3 v/v% at 310 kPa(g). Higher O2 purities and outlet pressures are available upon

request. On standard machines, the O2 purity and O2 outlet pressure are load dependent.

2. FOXOLUTION PSA O2 Concentrators require compressed air to ISO 8573-1 (2010) air quality Class 1.4.1. Free Air Delivery (FAD) estimated at

20°C, 1013 mbar to ISO 1217: 2009 Annex C and not Standard Temperature and Pressure (STP)4.

3. FAD requirements are dependent on the site conditions with respect to:

a. Altitude;

b. Ambient Temperature.

4. STP (1982) taken at 273.15°K (0°C) and 100 kPa – Ref. I.U.P.A.C. (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry).

5. Noise pressure level as per ISO 2151: 2004 and ISO 9614-2: 1996 tolerance: ± 3 dB (A).
