Personal StatementDraft some answers to the following questions. This is the start of a working document that you will refine over the year. Remember to be truthful, relevant and positive. A successful personal statement is a combination of head and heart.

NameMichael Hughes

What is/are your dream job(s)?What do you have to do to start working in that industry?Games Industry – To work in the games industry I would need to learn a wide range of different skills from across the industry. I would need to understand each of the job roles and the importance of each of them, specifically what each of the job roles carry out. I would also need to achieve excellence in one of the roles. My dream job would be games development, in order to achieve a job in this sector of the games industry I would need to be fluent with multiple programming languages such as C# and Java.

What skills do you possess now?Don’t list your qualifications as they are on you CV. Talk about what you did within those subjects that you’re good at and enjoyed.I have the ability to use quite a lot of technical modern software in the games industry. For instance, I can use Photoshop and illustrator together to a certain degree of accuracy to produce 2D artwork digitally. I also have a lot of experience with programs such as game maker, Click media fusion and Unity (game development software).

Have you carried out any work experience or voluntary work?I have worked at a local Airsoft company for a number of hours in a single week and also been attending Fire cadets for a number of months now. What personal interests and hobbies do you have or have had in the past?ReadingFilmsMusic – both playing and listening to.Socialising

SportsPetsTravelStamp collecting

However uninteresting you may think your interests are, even if you’ve not taken them very far, put them down.I used to love playing piano but I quit because I didn’t have the money to continue. I also enjoy listening to a lot of different kinds of music such as alternate, metal, rock, punk, some rap and I really enjoy electronic dance music such as Deadmau5 and most forms of hard style. I personally like listening to a lot of music because I like a lot of different sounds and styles, this means I could listen to rap at one minute and happily listen to rock or EDM the next and I just simply enjoy that change. Furthermore a lot of music I can relate too is very interesting and It

always makes me enjoy it even more when music has a meanful set of lyrics or a strong backstory behind a song.

As well as music I really love playing video games, they are enjoyable and fast paced. They’re also related to the games industry which I would like to go into to produce and develop video games myself. I like playing strategy game such as league of legends and StarCraft II because I prefer games that require skills, quick thinking and general diversity in order to win. Games such as these allow me to improve my skills at the same time being very enjoyable. I also enjoy playing games such as halo for a futuristic fantasy developed universe.

Socialising is a large part of my hobbies, I try and go out with my friends a lot because it gives me something to do, which is also healthy. Most of the time if I am socialising with friends I would play football or watch a film. I also enjoy meeting up with friends just to talk and relax.

I really enjoy sports such as pool/bowling/tennis and football. The reason I like these types of sports it’s because most are about precision and taking your time with things. A lot of thinking and fast reactions are also needed in sports such as tennis and football however I’m personally more interested in pool and bowling because it’s an introverted sport, it allows me to take my time and precisely play the game.

Finally, I love TV and Films especially Sci-fi films or programmes. I like these because I have always liked the future and thoughts about space and life in the universe, I think Sci-fi can really stretch someone’s imagination and personally they’re just interesting to watch.

What soft, transferable skills do you possess now or need to develop and how?Problem solving Communication CommitmentTenacity Creativity HonestyEfficiency Innovation TrustworthinessTeamwork Entrepreneurship ReliabilitySelf-presentation Punctuality HumourConfidence Public speaking Empathy

ICT Literacy NumeracyTry to use examples from your everyday experience and that negatives can sometimes be turned into positives.I believe I possess the ability to problem solve, teamwork and communicate well under any circumstances of a job role, I have developed both of these 3 transferable skills through fire cadets as I am required to work in a team to complete tasks and have to work with others whilst doing so. I have also shown each of these three skills through the 2D precision platformer game I have been developing, I have been coding the game in a team of 2 and it makes me share opinions and understand another person’s perspective of how to solve a problem or how to finish a project.

I believe I show Creativity and innovation but it does need to be improved, whilst I can construct ideas for a new task, actually achieving it is a different matter and sometimes don’t always put in the time necessary. Even though it could be improved I think I show creativity and innovation from some of the art work I produce, such as the Character design I created, I made a tall elemental giant with a mechanical side and arm.

I could improve with my Entrepreneurship since I haven’t had much experience with these in a volunteer or job role perspective. I think it’s important to have entrepreneurship because it allows me to handle money and work around problems from another perspective rather than common knowledge.

My ICT skills are very good; I know how to do a vast majority of things with a lot of electrical appliances, from phones to computers. I personally think this would help any form of job role because ICT is used everywhere now a days and I feel as though I have adopted to it well.
