Selections

What is a selection? Theactiveareaofanimage.

Insidethisareayoucan:cut,copy,paste,paint,erase,usealter,adjustthecolor/contrastandmuch

more.

How to use a Selection:Selectaselectiontoolfromthetoolbar,Clickanddraganywhere.Amarqueewillbecreated.Theareaenclosed

istheselectedarea.Withtheselectionyoucandomanythings,suchascopy,cut,transform,move,change

colors.

CanmoveselectionbyremainingwiththeselectedtoolandclickingINSIDEtheselectionarea.

PHOTOSHOP Elements Interface on an Apple Computer.

Class Exercise:go to FILE>NEW

and create a blank file (make it at least 600x400pixels, or 4 wide), make the background white.ip

Take the first selection tool, which is a rect-angle.

Click on the new documents background, and

drag while depressing the mouse key.

Let go. That is a selection area.

Go back to the tool bar, click and hold down themouse key. The Elliptical Marquee tool shouldappear. Move the mouse over that symbol andlet go.

Now click and drag on the image. A marqueeshould appear when you let go.

Try moving the selections around.

In this handout we also include notes for Photoshop CS.

This is because many participants in class already own a

copy of Photoshop.

The working methods and tools for PHOTOSHOP Elem

and PHOTOSHOP CS are very similiar.

Where there are differences, we will point them out. Othe

we will use the phrase PHOTOSHOP.

Also please note that older versions of either program wi

have similiarities to what we are talking about here,but th

terface will be different.

Developing skill with the Selection Tools and Methods ar

essary to take advantage of the image editing power of P

SHOP.

There is a lot of material to cover however we will go ov

class any basics.

This class is intended to introduce to you the various sele

tools and methods available in PHOTOSHOP.

Another consideration if you plan on spending signicant time using PHOTOSHOP is to invest in a good mou

tablet/stylus. The average mouse attached with a cable will quickly frustrate most users trying to draw a line.



Selection Tools:

Style Menu:Normal:Shapedrawnwithoutrestraints

AspectRatio:

ie2:1IfyouwanttocreateashapewithaxedratiobetweenHeightandWidth.

FixedSize:

ie40pixels.Notewithxedsize,onceletgoofmouse,youcanmoveselectionaround.

willseetheshapeselectiontoolsavailable.

InElementsyoudonothavetherowshapes

TheoptionbarisfunctionallythesameinbothElementsandCS.

RemembertoPresstheMousebutton

down,andwaitforthedialogboxto

appear,thenwhilestillholdingthe

mousekeydown,moveovertothe

toolsymbolyouwanttoselectand

letgo.Thecolumnshouldnowshow

yourselectedsymbol,anditwillbe

thecurrenttool.

***NOTE:Onlytoolswiththesmall

arrowinthelowerrightcornerhave

othertoolstoselectinthatboxslot.



LASSO TOOLDrawingmarquearoundirregular

Itismoreforgivinginconnecting

POLYGONAL LASSO TOOLWiththistoolyoucancreatelinesthatfollowthecontoursofwhatyou

aretracing.Youcanswitchtofreehandformby(OPTION/ALT).Notethatthesym -bolchangestotheLassoTool.

Holdingdowntheshiftkeyrestrainsthetooltocreaterightanglesonly.

Holddownthe(OPTION/ALT)andclicktousethepolygontool.(SHIFT+OPTION/ALT)contrainsthelinesto45,90andstraight.(OPTION/ALT)anddragthemousewiththemousedown,changesthetooltoalasso

Press&releasethecommandkey,PSwillclosetheselectionforyou.

HINT:With the Polygonal tool,

double clicking anywhere closesthe selection immediately. (youllsee a straight line to the origin ofthe selection if you are not nearby.

LASSO-Straightlinescanbemadebyholdingdownthe(OPTION/ALT)whilethekeyispressedeachmouseclickcreates(connects)astraightline.

Youwillseethetoolsymbol

MAGIC WAND TOOL

Selectionsbasedonpixelcolor.

Excellentforpickingsolidcolorsfromanimage.

Tolerance;Howclosetotheselectedpixelcolortoselect.

Color: Unless you are doing work for color separation, make sure you are in RGB mode not CMYK mode.PHOTOSHOP uses channels- Red, Green and Blue to make all the colors you see in an image.

RGB.Eachcolorinachannelcanbeseenasagrayscaleof0-255.

ie;InGrayscalethereareonly256grays,numbered0-255.Ifthewandisusedto

selectagraycolor,anditstolerancewassetto0,itwouldonlyselectthatcolor

FEATHERThissetsthefeatheringforthecurrentselectiononly.

Itssaferthanusingtheoptionssettingforaselectiontool.Itisrecommendedthatyouleavethefeatherrateset

to0ontheoptionsbar,andwhenyouwanttofeatheraselection,usetheSELECT>FEATHERoption.

GROWThiscommandisdependentontheoptionssettingofthemagicwandtool.Itoperatesinasimilarway.Itwill

expandaselectiononlyforcolorssimilartotheonesinthecurrentselection.Butitsrestrainedsimilartohaving

contiguousselected.

SIMILARSameasGROWbutitwillexpandaselectionacrossanentireimage.

LOAD SELECTION

Youcansaveselectionstoreuse,andSELECT>LOADSELECTIONbringsupthemenuwhereyoucanpick

whatsavedselectionsyouwanttoload.

SAVE SELECTION

Whenyouspendalotoftimemakingaselection,youmaynotwanttohavetodoitagain,sosavingtheselec -

tionbecomesanoption.Yourprojectmightalsobenetfromusingthesameselectionagainfordifferentopera -

tions.SoSavingtheselectioncanbeausefulthing.Thesavedselectionsstaywiththedocument.Andthedocu -

mentwillbeaPHOTOSHOPformatdocument.IfyoudoasaveasJPEGPHOTOSHOPwontlikethatand

giveyouanerrormessage,sayinglemustbesavedasacopyandthelenameeldinthesavedialogboxwill

haveyourlenamewithcopystuckin.

NotethattheSAVEDselectionsstaywithyourdocument,andonlythenwhenitissavedinthePSDformat.

DELETE SELECTION
