Experts believe the tobacco plant, as we know it today, began grow
ing in the Americas at about 6000 BC. It is believed that Native A
meri-
cans began using tobacco in various ways (including smoking) a
few thousand years later. As time went on, tobacco and tobacco
usage
became very common in the Americas. ere is a drawing of smo
king by the ancient Mayas from about 1400 years ago. In it, a M
ayan is
shown smoking a roll of tobacco leaves tied with a string.
COLUMBUS: Tobacco was rst discovered by Europeans via C
hristopher Columbus. Columbus received dried tobacco leaves a
s gifts
when he landed in what is now the Caribbean. Two of his crew a
re credited with rst observing smoking when they were exploring
what
is now Cuba. e natives taught them how to smoke and one of
the crew, Rodrigo de Jerez took the habit home to Europe. In f
act his
neighbors were so frightened by seeing smoke coming out of his no
se and mouth that they noti ed the local Inquisition. Jerez was jail
ed for
7 years (and you thought smokers had it tough nowadays)! By the
time Jerez was nally released, smoking had become all the rage in
Spain.
BLUNTED ENDS: Smoking at that time was done via loosely r
olled, open ended cigar type products with multiple wrappers or
binders
held together by licking the ends of the leaves. As cigar smoking
progressed many improvements came to Cigars. For example, on
e new
style of cigar rolling formed a rounded smooth tip. is Blunt en
d caused this new style to be called a Blunt. Nowadays most cigars
, even
Coronas and Robustos have this same rounded end but the origin
al term Blunt still applies.
INHALATION BEGINS: e birth of the modern rolled cigarette
happened in 1614 in Seville. King Philip III required all tobacco gr
own in
the Spanish New World to be shipped to a central location in Seville
, to control pricing and prevent oversupply. Because of this, Seville b
ecame
the world center for the production of cigars. Street beggars would p
ick up the remainders of used cigars, take them apart and re-roll th
em in
newspaper. Because of the scarcity of tobacco and their desire to enjo
y every drop, they began holding the smoke in their lungs (inhaling
). is
took hold and made its way through the working class until the pra
ctice became common. us the modern hand-rolled cigarette was
born.
THE DAWN OF CIGARETTE PAPER: Of course burning ne
wspaper had its own problems, especially with the then lead base
d inks.
Spanish merchants began o ering plain unprinted paper for this p
urpose. One factory in Alcoy that was making specialized packing
papers
o ered the rst paper designed speci cally for cigarette rolling.
is paper was later improved and an additional factory in Alcoy o
pened
to compete. Over time additional cigarette paper factories opene
d near Barcelona, then France, the UK and eventually there wer
e many
factories across Europe. In Alcoy Spain there still is one rolling pa
per factory left, which can actually trace its roots back to the rst
rolling
paper factory. is Alcoy factory produces many of our popular pa
pers to date. Brands such as RAW, Elements, Juicy Jays & DLX are
made
using processes that date back to the origin of this factory. Some o
f the craftsmen at this factory have been making papers for generat
ions!
SIZES: In Spain, the size that was developed based on consumer p
reference was approximately 78mm long by 44mm high. At rst th
is was
the size that dominated the entire European market. However, K
ing James 1 and his later successors enacted heavy tobacco taxes.
is led
the British market to move to a smaller size which held about 25%
less tobacco. is new small size was about 70mm long by 38mm
high.
As the British Empire grew, so did the proliferation of this smalle
r British sized rolling paper. In fact, to this date in most of the com
mon-

wealth countries the #1 selling size is this small 70mm paper. is
paper became known as Standard Size or Single Wide. e ori
ginal
Spanish 78mm paper became known as Spanish Size, except th
e British referred to it as One and quarter, in reference to how it
holds
about 25% more tobacco than a British Standard Sized paper.
THE KING IS BORN: Flash forward about 100 years and the
industrial revolution allowed the mass production of machine m
ade
cigarettes. At rst, most cigarettes were either 70mm or 78mm lo
ng without a lter. However in the 1950s ltered cigarettes beg
an to
take over. Consumers were concerned that by purchasing a lter
ed cigarette they were getting less tobacco as
the lter took up some of the cigarettes space that used to be lled
with tobacco. us large tobacco companies
responded to this by increasing the length of cigarettes to accommo
date the lter. Cigarette size increased from
70mm or 78mm to a new 84mm size. is new size became know
n as King Size, named after the King of
England who was seen publicly smoking this new cigarette. Over
the next several decades the shorter cigarettes
saw their market share shrink dramatically until they were all b
ut replaced by the new 84mm King Size.
However rolling paper factories missed the opportunity to chang
e their sizes to suit this new consumer pref-
erence and continued producing the legacy sizes of generations p
ast. It wasnt until 2009 when HBI nally
produced the worlds rst 84mm cigarette rolling papers with thei
r launch of DLX brand 84s as they are called.
While it may appear that rolling paper companies are dramatical
ly behind the times, this is common among
rolling paper factories as most companies prefer not to change wi
th the times. However this sort of dinosaur
attitude has recently been changing as new and improved forms
of cigarette papers have been launched in
recent years. Among them are natural unbleached and unre ned p
apers (i.e. RAW), ultra thin rice papers (i.e.
Elements), and extra slow burning papers (i.e. DLX). e next old
est signi cant rolling paper innovation was
the invention of interleaved rolling papers which was launched 110
years ago at the 1900 wolds fair, and led to
the formation of the Zig Zag brand. Zig Zag means how the pap
ers are interleaved in a zig-zag format.
CONFUSED? In Commonwealth countries the #1 selling size is
still the 70mm standard size papers. However
in the rest of the world including the USA, Spanish Size (1) is by
far the better seller. Overall there has been a
market trend towards this original 1 size and sales data has shown
that it is increasing in popularity, especially
in the UK and Canada. Now that there is nally an 84mm rolling
paper available, sales of that size are increas-
ing steadily and will likely eventually become one of the most pop
ular sizes, mirroring the extreme popularity
of 84mm King Size Cigarettes.
Now wed like to address so called King Size rolling papers whi
ch are actually miss-named. ese date back
to 1984 when Rizla launched their 100mm rolling papers catered
towards women that preferred the 100mm
cigarette size. People rst referred to this as Queen Size. Anoth
er rm tried to outdo Rizla and launched a
110mm paper, and named it King Size. However this is a misno
mer. King Size cigarettes are all 84mm long.
A 110mm paper is actually a longer Queen Size and is much lo
nger then the preferred 84mm standard King Size. e aforement
ioned
King Size rolling papers were typically 110mm long and 52mm h
igh. However the newer format of this King Size is 110mm long
and
44mm high (sometimes called King Size, sometimes called King S
ize Slim). is has become one of the most popular sizes in Europ
e and
is growing while the older King Size is decreasing. e di erence i
s the 8mm in paper height. e 44mm height is the original Spa
nish
Sized or 1 sized height, and seems to be the preferred height by
most smokers for all rolling papers (regardless of length).

ere are 3 huge multinational rolling paper companies:
One of the largest is Republic/Bollore in France. ey make Job, T
op, Zig Zag, OCB, Gambler and Abadie.
eir key competitor is Imperial Tobacco UK. is large multina
tional tobacco company owns Rizla, Joker, and EZ-Wider.
Another very large out t is Miquel Y Costas. ey are the makers
of Smoking brand, Bugler papers, Pure Hemp brand and Bambu
.
After these 3 big guys come a series of independent brands (RA
W, Elements, DLX, Skunk, Hempire, Chills, Zen, Juicy Jays, e
tc..).
Although we didnt create all of these brands, HBI has become t
he headquarters for most if not all quality independent rolling p
aper
brands, especially the cutting edge ones. With the tremendous inc
rease in niche market sales, HBI has been able to achieve large gro
wth
and success. However our sales overall are still only a tiny fraction
of the big guys.
Special Note about China: While China did invent paper; they d
id not invent cigarette paper with good cause. e Chinese Emp
eror
Chongzhen banned tobacco and ordered that anyone who smoke
d it should be beheaded. Tobacco was completely forbidden in C
hina
for hundreds of years and thus no cigarette paper was ever develo
ped there. It is only quite recently that China has begun producin
g any
cigarette rolling paper. Most of the cheaper rolling papers now com
ing out of china are actually shoe paper (the crinkly paper that you
nd
stu ed into the toe of a new pair of shoes) being marketed as rol
ling paper. While the two look similar, shoe paper burns fast and
tears
easily. e Europeans have a long head start over the Chinese when
it comes to cigarette rolling papers, and have mastered their craft
over
many generations and hundreds of years.
* ere are also the large companies Gizeh of Germany and Op Paprin
a of the Czech Republic however these two mostly sell in their home m
arkets.
* One interesting note is that the rst avored tobacco was smoked by t
he ancient Mayans who perfumed their tobacco with reeds. at may
predate
Juicy Cigars for originality, but were certain that Juicy Cigars taste m
uch better.
* ere is a story that cigarettes were invented in 1750 by Egyptian s
oldiers who had broken their only pipe. e story goes that they used
leftover
paper that had been used to wrap munitions in order to smoke. How
ever there is no actual proof of this story whereas the Spanish street b
eggar
story has much documentation.

HEMP is smooth burning and one of the strongest plant fi bers in the world.
TREE FREE papers are environmentally friendly and contain no wood particles.

Looking back many years ago ELEMENTs founder remem-bered seeing his father taking great pleasure in roll-ing his own smokes. He always used ungummed thin rice papers because they burn with almost ZERO ash. Pure rice papers are just that, NO chemicals, NO pulp and NO hemp. Over the past decade we have watched more and more companies jump into the Hemp Paper market and we saw that most new brands were try-ing to ride a marketing wave. They relied mostly on marketing and catchy names to sell their products, rather then the quality of the actual paper. To counter the trend and as a dedication to fond memories of the past, we decided to return to the ELEMENTS of smok-ing. Thus we designed a rice paper in the classic style of old Alcoy, pressed it to make it ultra slow burning and incredibly thin. Then we added just a thin strip of natural gum from sugar. The result is probably the best rolling paper ever produced by man. Elements burn with zero ash, except for a tiny line caused by the sugar gum turning into caramel as it burns. Not surprisingly, Elements have become a top selling brand across the globe! We are very proud of Elements and customer response has been incredible.
In 2008 Elements launched the new MAGNET-PACKS. These packs were designed to better protect the beautiful thin rice papers inside. Also, they keep the pack closed (Josh said he was sick of seeing his beau-tiful packs of Elements stuck open). RAW was a project that came to mind after a friend gave me an additive free cigarette in 1993. I thought if they can make an additive free cigarette why can't they wrap it in an additive free paper? There are many rumors about gunpowder rings and strange additives in conventional mass-marketed cigarette paper, these additives could actually increase carbon monoxide. I became determined to produce and market the purest cigarette rolling papers possible. My friends agreed to be my product testers.
They say "the devil lies in the details", and the problem was how to bring this ideal product to fruition. It took years of research and development (and many failed attempts) until we finally produced the first sheets of what would later become known as RAW. Now do you want to know the reallynitty-gritty details of the invention process? I began having samples made of various unbleached fiber papers. Each one was evaluated and found notto be suitable. What do I mean? Well, regular unbleached paper pulp can be a dark scary brown or gray. Think of newspaper or a paper bag. Weblended plant materials such as flax and hemp until the perfect burn rate, flavor (or lack of it) and consistency was achieved. In the end RAW
became a beautiful translucent medium brown that is reminiscent of honey whole wheat bread. I was so proud of this beautiful creation. My friends loved it.
I then designed a very meticulous Criss-Cross watermark with "hard stops" that accented the burn qualities of the paper and helped to prevent uneven burning (aka running or canoeing). This unique Criss-Cross HBI watermark is now famous among smokers 'in the know' and helps set RAW
apart from any Rawnabees.
RAW gum differs slightly with every batch. This is because we use a patent-pending blend of sugars from the Acacia plant with pure hemp protein from our friends at Manitoba Harvest*. We found that adding hemp to the mix causes superb results. Not only does the gum burn with less ash and a smoother flavor, but it also causes the burn rate of the gum to better match the burn rate of the paper. Think of it as transitioning the gum to the paper.
RAW is always a work in progress. We seek absolute perfection and have continued to evolve based on our community's feedback. If you have suggestions or want to participate in helping us to further improve RAW please do not hesitate to contact us.

Pay-Pay is the oldest brand of rolling paper in the world. It has existed since 1764 before
booklets were even invented! They used to be made in large sheets that smokers would
have to cut-up. Pay-Pay papers were originally traded by Spanish sailors for cotton and
tobacco in North America (this is the earliest weve ever heard of a paper entering the North
American market). Their packs and styles have changed a lot over the 248 years that this
brand has been available. Until recently only a few smoking connoisseurs knew what Pay-
Pay was, however Pay-Pay has earned a reputation as a modern high quality low cost
paper. The paper is made from pure hemp with sweet sugar glue. Pay-Pay papers are also a
great value with an average cost of only pennies per pack. We have in our o ce old original
antique paintings that are Pay-Pay advertisements from the turn of the century. They are
beautiful and part of our museum collection.

Skunk is one of the oldest brands of hemp papers in the marketplace. When it was launched in 1994 it took the market by surprise and carved out a longstanding niche for itself. The SKUNK character Stinky is very well known and has even been on its own line of clothing. The Original Skunk papers are made in Spain and are one of our longstanding favorites.These three Skunk papers are made in Spain of pure hemp. They burn nice and slowly and have a very loyal customer base. The Skunk concept comes from the experiences of its creator, Orion. Orion was an avid RYO smoker and kept getting shunned wherever he went. Whenever he would light a smoke, people would pinch their noses and say eewwwhhh, that stinks would you please put that out. DID YOU KNOW?PLANT BASED GUM
Potato gum is a newer rolling paper gum made from potato starch. It can be slightly yellow in color or clear, depending on the manufacturer. Potato gum sticks very well often exceeding the tensile strength of Sugar or Acacia gum. However it does burn di erently than Sugar or Acacia gum and it tastes bitter. One reason it works so well is that its bitter taste prevents people from accidentally licking it all o the paper. For example if you lick sugar gum, it tastes good and your tongue is automatically drawn to the taste generat-ing more saliva and possibly causing you to lick all of that gum right o the paper! With potato gum, this doesnt happen.Sugar gum is as simple as it sounds, gum actually made from sugar or from plant sap. Acacia (Arabic) gum, is harmlessly extracted from the Acacia tree*. These gums stick very well as long as they are moistened properly. These gums require only a gentle lick to moisten the gum line. Unfortunately, smokers often lick too much. This can lick o the gum and potentially cause the paper not to stick. A good tip is to moisten the gum line from the backside of the paper.
All of the ELEMENTS, JUICY JAYS, RAW (see below about RAWs special gum), DLX and SKUNK papers use these truly natural gums. These gums are perfect for your Vegan/Vegetarian or environmentally friendly minded customers. One-way to know for certain if a paper uses 100% Natural Veg-etarian Gum is to see where it is made. If you see made in Spain, then the paper is definitely uses a plant based natural gum since both factories in Spain use only vegetarian gums**.
*Acacia rolling paper gum is derived from the resins of a particular kind of African acacia tree the Acacia Senegalensis. This Acacia variety was best known in the days of the Pharaos, today it has become more rare. These Acacias are slow growing desert trees. It is said their roots spread out as far as 20 kilometers. Now the tree is native only in the Sudan, although it has also come to be cultivated on small farms in Mali, Niger and Senegal. Rolling Paper factories use gum from both of these sources, the wild and the domesticated. Acacia resin, once tapped from the trees, is dissolved in water, filtered, pasteurized and turned into a fine powder 100% Pure, 100% Virgin. It is a completely chemical-free substance, with no additives of any kind. I passes the highest known food standard parameters; it has a mild taste and it even has been said to have mildly beneficial characteristics as a natural cholesterol reducer.**Warning; China is now producing knockoff rolling papers. Some copies even have the correct water-mark on the papers. However the quality of the actual paper and gum is way inferior to the genuine article. If someone offers you a deal that seems too good to be true it probably is.
RAW NATURAL HEMP GUMRAW gum di ers slightly with every batch. This is because we use a blend of sugars from the Acacia plant with natural potato starch and powdered hemp from our friends at Manitoba Harvest*. This is our proprietary formula for making our natural rolling paper glue. The trick is blending it in a way that it sticks perfectly yet burns with a minimal amount of ash. We found that add-ing hemp to the mix causes the gum to burn with less ash and a smoother
fl avour. Think of it as transitioning the gum to the paper. By blending the same materials that are in the paper into the gum, it causes the burn rate of the gum to better match the burn rate of the paper.
*Our gum is completely proprietary and our new formula(s) are patent pending. We have to try and pro-tect RAW from unfortunately incessant copying by two large tobacco giants. For information on our gum patent fi llings please contact our legal department.
ANIMAL BASED GLUEAnimal based gum is exactly what it sounds like and some paper factories still use it in their production. It is unfortunately that this practise still is commonplace but certain paper factories use gum that is made from rotting/fermenting dead animals (remember the old saying about old horses being sent to the glue factory, this is based on actual fact). There has been some controversy about this because unscrupulous companies have begun calling their animal based gum papers Natural Gum. They claim that dead animal glue is technically Natural. Again this really confuses consumers into think-
ing that Natural Gum and the truly natural Sugar and Acacia gums are the same thing. Its important that you educate your customers on the various paper gums and try to avoid ones that use animal based gum (this is di cult as brands will not openly admit to using Animal based gum on their pack-ages and some might even lie about it).

INFORMATION IS KEYAnother way to increase sales and raise product value is by sharing information about what makes a product special. As you probably know PRYLJTTEN produces the most innovative RYO products in the world, but without your help this information doesnt get to the end consumer.
If your sta smokes and uses the products you sell they can better advise your customers on which ones rock and which ones are awful. They can better bond with your customers and help establish long term relationships. Otherwise if you hire a Nun who doesnt smoke and hates the smell of cigarette smoke, that person will hate their job and likely treat your customers poorly. Even if the Nun fakes it the truth oozes out of her pores smokers can spot a non smoker (and a faker) a mile away. True die hard smokers would prefer to be serviced by their fellow smokers. Having a Nun tell a smoker which paper or cigar smokes better is always a bad idea. At PRYLJTTEN we actually banned all machine-made cigarettes from our premises. Most of us smoke, and we smoke RYO, MYO or Pipe tobacco. We dont fake it we love it and we live it. Thats why we do what we do so much better than any of our competitors. If you create a similar environment with your store and your customers, it will help foster a customer preference for your store. You will become their store of choice... they will look to you for all the newest and coolest. They will trust your judgment and will catch on to your excitement.
HIRE STAFF THAT SMOKE
In interviews with some of the most successful specialty tobacco retailers across the USA, they all cite verbatim that one of the biggest keys to their success is di erentiating themselves from the competitors. The undeniable fact of todays super-competitive marketplace is that the consumers have an abundance of choices.
SO WHY SHOULD THE CONSUMERCHOOSE YOUR STORE?
In our industry the most pro table stores do not charge the least for their items. The most pro table stores charge high prices but have enough customer loyalty to substantiate. If you build a beautiful display for your rolling papers, you increase their value in your customers mind. He will now be willing to pay you 10-30% more per pack than he would if you didnt have the display. Its part of human nature; Perceived value is more important than actual value. Who cares what a pack of papers is really worth - all you should care about its what is worth to your customer. Well do our best to help you by providing multitiered displays, posters and signage. We must work together as partners to raise the products value in the mind of the customer.
FACT:
There are many ways to di erentiate your store from your competitors but the winning method is to have a better selection and to promote that better selection. Although this carries through all products, we are concentrating on RYO products. There are two types of RYO products in the marketplace; Commercial brands (big brands) and Specialty brands (smaller brands). Commercial brands are ones that are more common and available almost everywhere. Specialty brands are the smaller brands that are only available at select retailed stores.
Lets start with some basic examples involving a big brand vs a specialty brand.
PROMOTING A COMMERCIAL BRANDOn the west coast of America, Zig-Zag papers are sold at almost every convenience store, cigarette stand and tobacconist. If you sell Zig-Zag papers there is no reason for the consumer to choose your store. The consumer can easily purchase them at the local gas station or at at any convenience store. You are forced to price compete against tens of thousands of other stores and to accept a smaller pro t margin.
PROMOTING A SPECIALTY BRANDElements is one of the most popular and pro table specialty papers. If you get the consumer to choose Elements as their preferred brand then they will come back to your store to purchase them. There are fewer stores that carry Elements so you have less price-pressure to compete. You can charge a premium price and increase your sales. In short, you win in two important ways.
When marketing RYO products in your store, you have to determine the maximum price that consumers are willing to pay; the sweet spot price. If you charge too much for an item, sales will be slow and you encourage competitors to enter your market. If you charge too little then you simply wont make the pro ts that you could. Its important to get a feel for your market and decide what price is the sweetest one.

Lets talk about merchandising. A store is not just a random conglomerations of merchandise; a store is a sensory experience. The easiest way to merchandise is to rst make a list of the items you WANT to sell in your store, in each category. These are probably high margin items and ones that help give your store (and your bank account) an edge. For example when it comes to papers it is probably RAW and Elements, since they have a much much higher margin than generic regular everyone and their mother sells this stu . Stand in front of your counter as if you were a customer and try to feel where your eyes naturally go. What is the best spot to put high margin cool items? Once you recognize the spots, the rest sort of falls into place. Put the items you want to sell in the best spots, and put the generic stu in I dont care about you at all spots. Another way to accomplish this is to create colorful eye-catching displays to purposefully make certain items or areas the focus of attention. No matter which way you do it, so long as youre actively trying to merchandise you will de nitely increase your pro ts!

Advice given to us by some of our top individual store ownersThe relationship between PRYLJTTEN and your store is really more of a partnership than a supplier-customer relationship. So, if we can help you increase your sales overall in your store, then we benefi t as well. After all, our success is directly tied into your success. It does us no good to sell you product if you dont turn around and sell that product to consumers. In short, were in business together and we would like to share some advice given to us over the years by some of our top individual store owners & friends. Much of this you might already know, but just in case here it is:
STAGE 1:
FISHING FOR CUSTOMERSMany stores pay a lot of money to be on a busy commercial street. This is like asking to pay a lot of money to sh at a river that has a lot of sh in it. Its important to recognize this and use all the tools at your diposal to sh the river. The more lures you put out, the greater chance you have of catching more sh.
The bottom line is that an open door is an invitation to come inside. Studies have shown a 30% increase in sales between a store that leaves its front door open to one that has the door closed (a retail store in California told us they did an experiment where they left the front door open every-other-Saturday. They graphed the sales gures over the course of 3 months and found that the days the front door was open their sales were 28.7% higher overall). The next question you might ask is how do I leave my door open when its super hot or super cold outside. The answer is something called an Air Door / Door curtain. This is an electric device that goes above your doorway and creates an air pocket which (according to the manufacturers) reduces heat / cold loss by 80% when the do
