The Golden Jubilee of Fr. Ferdinand Kullu, SJ, and the Mahila SanghCharismatic Convention.

Charismatic Prayer Convention started at 9.00 A.M on7 October 2019 at the Loyola Ground, Ranchi and wenton till 10 October 2019. It was organized by the MahilaSangh of Ranchi Arch Diocese assisted by the CatholicSabha and Yuva Sangh. On 7 October it began with aHoly Eucharist offered by Fr. Provincial Joseph MarianusKujur, S.J. Those who concelebrated were the ParishPriest of the Cathedral Fr. Theodore Toppo, Fr. ClementEkka, S.J. and Fr. Ajay Soreng, S.J. Fr. Provincial gavethe homily based on the readings of the day, but dweltmore on the Feast of our Lady of the Rosary as ithappened to be its Feast Day proper. The Feast of our Lady of the Rosary is actually called the Feast of our Lady ofVictory since, as the tradition goes, through her intercession the naval war was won on 7 October 1571 and later thevictory was attributed to the prayers of the Rosary. The prayer of the Rosary originated from the vision of our Lady toSt. Dominic and was popularized by his conferers later on. The Rosary prayer in commemoration of the mysteries inthe life of Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary and praying them in times of difficulties, problems and darkness in life isunderstood to give us victory. However, it appears today that our fingers are more on our cell phones rather than on thebeads of the Rosary, whereas it should be the vice versa.

On 7 October 2019 after the Holy Eucharist at the opening of the Charismatic Convention, Fr. Provincialproceeded to ATC, Namkum, to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Fr Ferdinand Kullu, S.J. The scheduled time forMass was 10.00 A.M. but it got started at 11.00 A.M. due to the late arrival of Fr Provincial. The Jubilee HolyEucharist got started with an entrance hymn and a welcome note by Fr. Suman Beck S.J. Some 50 family members ofFr Ferdi came for the occasion. A good number of Jesuits as well as the local faithful and a sizable number of Sistersparticipated and prayed for Fr. Ferdinand. The Novices led the choir joyously.

St Xavier’s College, Ranchi

The month of August and September brought a lot ofshowers of blessings on the College. It gave an opportunityto bring out our Jesuit and Christian legacy for the studentsand the staff. On August 29th and 30th the college markedthe 10th and 11th Graduation Ceremony. HonorableGovernor Draupadi Murmu blessed us with her auspiciouspresence on the 29th of August for the degree distributionwith the graceful presence of the guest of honor, the ViceChancellor, Dr. Ramesh Pandey and Pro Vice ChancellorKamini Kumar. On the 30th of August, the students ofdifferent streams and honors were awarded for theirexcellent academic performance throughout the year; itwas the Annual Day of the College. We concluded the 4-days ceremony on 1st of September with the remainingprograms of the Xavier Utsav of February, 2019 whichwas left incomplete due to some unavoidable reasons. Onthe 3rd of September after the Graduation and Annual DayCeremony, the Students of the degree college started theMid Semester Exams. The exams continued and suddenlycame the idea of celebrating 75 years of St. Xavier’sCollege, the Platinum Jubilee. In the able leadership of Fr.Emmanuel Barla, S.J. along with Professors Dr. K. K.Bose and Dr. V. P. Saran it was decided to have theinauguration of jubilee celebration on 24th, 25th and 26th

of September cancelling the classes on these days. ManyProfessors did not agree to that idea of inaugurating thejubilee for three days since we were already behind incompleting our syllabus due to late admission and the 4-days of Graduation and Annual Day Ceremony. Yet wefinally went with the decision of the principal for thecelebration and it was grand. As it was decided, on 24th

of September Rt. Rev. Archbishop, Felix Toppo, SJ, DDinaugurated the 3-days Inauguration of Platinum JubileeCelebration, with Rev. Dr. Fr. Joseph Marianus Kujur,S.J., Provincial Superior of Ranchi Jesuit Province whowas the guest of Honour. On the next day 25th ofSeptember Fr. Provincial, Dr. Joseph Marianus Kujur, S.J.was the chief guest. On the third day, 26th of September,Shri Arjun Munda, Union Cabinet Minister of Tribal Affairs, was the Chief Guest. Shri Harivansh, M. P. DeputyChairman, Rajya Sabha presided over the Function.

Before the grand inauguration, we could not find timeto have a community meeting for the Platinum jubilee todiscern how it could be celebrated in Jesuit and Christianway. Because of this in the 3-days inaugural program, we

could not include the inaugural Mass. Even the studentswere informed in an interesting way with false assuranceby asking them to come and attend the jubilee celebrationso that they would get the attendance. Because of this on24th there was a chaos in the campus but the staff managedto maintain the discipline in the venue of celebration as theother students outside the venue roamed around in thecampus. The programs were arranged in the open spacein front of the Inter College building so the Inter Collegejoined the celebration cancelling their classes during the4-days degree ceremony and also during the 3-days Jubileecelebration.

Though this inauguration had 3 days, the Departmentof Education under the guidance of Fr. Florence Purty hadit already inaugurated on the foundation day of the collegei.e. 3rd of July 2019. The students of the Department ofEducation participated and presented a dance on thisoccasion and the Chief Guest was Dr. Fr. Provincial JosephMarianus Kujur, S.J. who planted a tree to mark theoccasion. The Department of Education had also theInauguration of the new Academic session 2019-2020 on26th of July and the Chief Guest was Dr. P.K. Verma. TheDepartment of Education participated in the Desh Raag aCultural Competition organized by the Department of Hindiin the college premise. One of the houses, namely Gandhihouse of the Department of Education won the first placein the group song category of competition.

The month of October is a month of Puja- holidaysand other holidays which started on 2nd of October. Beforegoing for the holidays on 1st of October Gandhi Jayantiwas celebrated in the Department of Education. Theprincipal of B. Ed. College, Bethesada, Ranchi was thechief guest for the occasion. grow together. The Winter semester began on 14th October. In this semester we are learning moral philosophy.

The German Province has Instagram account, whichis called Jesuiten. This initiative is meant to tell people aboutthe Jesuit life. Sch. Paulus took over the Instagram accountfor a month and shared about his daily life with his followersof this Instagram account. This was a very good chancefor him to put into practice, what he learnt in the last social

media course. This opportunity helped him to gain somepractical knowledge about the social media. He learnedthat the social media like Instagram or Facebook couldbe for us Jesuits a good medium to reach out to the youngpeople, because it is at these social platforms, the youngpeople spend most of their time. This was a greatexperience for Sch. Paulus. Well done Paulus!
