INTRODUCTION
The soils of northern Vancouver Island have . been mapped at a reconnais-sance level of investigation . The soil, maps are presented at a scale of1 :50 000 . Each map contains a soils key which briefly describes the character-istics of each map unit . The expanded legend in this report provides, additional information for each soil association component mapped in the studyarea . In addition, landscape characteristics used to stratify the soils areshown . The methods used to map the soils of Vancouver Island are explained byJung,en (in preparation) .
The report is technical and is intended for people with some background insoil science . Definitions and explanation of terms are not given ; thoserequiring such information should refer to Source of Further Information . TheTerrestrial Studies Branch would be willing to assist users in developinginterpretations for specific purposes .
Soils can be interpreted for a number of land uses to determine theirsuitability for ,agriculture, forestry, recreation, wildlife, and engineeringuses such as roads, dwellings, and septic tanks . The methods used to derivemany of these 'interpretations are outlined by Jungen (in preparation) andshould be consulted by users interested in providing similar land use interpre-tations for northern Vancouver Island .
Soil profile descriptions and physical and chemical analyses of many soilsfor northern Vancouver' Island (Chatterton and Senyk, in preparation) will beavailable upon request from the Map Librarian, ; Assessment and PlanningDivision, Ministry of Environment, Parliament Bui1dings,- Victoria, B .C ., V8V1X4 . The 1 :50 000 scale soil maps and accompanying .soil keys for northernVancouver Island can also be obtained at the above address ; please specify theappropriate National Topographic Series .(N .T .S .) map sheets .
Other reports and maps are or will soon be available which describe thegeology, climate, and vegetation of the study area . Please refer to Sources ofFurther Information for the appropriate references .

SOIL ASSOCIATION DESCRIPTIONS
SOIL ASSOCIATION DESCRIPTIONS
Each soil association and soil association~ component mapped in northernVancouver Island is described here . The soils are described in alphabeticalorder by soil symbol . Texture, coarse fragment content, landform (terrain)characteristics, slope and elevation range, biophysical forest zone and subzone(according to Narcombe, in prep .), underlying bedrock characteristics, andother landscape features are provided for each soil association .
Components are subdivisions of soil associations based on variations infeatures such as depth to bedrock, drainage, and, soil classification . Thesevariations are described for each component mapped' per soil association . Soilclassification is according to The Canadian System of Soil Classification(Canada Soil Survey Committee, 1978) . Comments are given using a numericsymbol which are explained on p. 115 .
Drainage class symbols are as follows :
r
'
rapidly drained
w well drained
m moderately welldrained
i imperfectly drained
p poorly drained
vp very poorly drained
Soil moisture content seldom exceeds fieldcapacity in any horizon except immediately afterwater additions .
Soil moisture content does not normally exceedfield capacity in any horizon (except possibly inC) for a significant part of the year .
Soil moisture in excess of field capacity remainsfor a small but significant period of the year .
Soil moisture in excess of field capacity remainsin subsurface horizons for moderately long periodduring the year .
Soil moisture in excess of field capacity remainsi n all horizons a larger part of the year .
surface most of the year .Free water remains at or within 30 cm of the
The soil drainage classes are defined i n terms of actual moisture contentin excess of field capacity, and the extent of the period during which suchexcess water is present in the plant-root zone . Field capacity is thepercentage of water remaining in the soil two or three days after the soil hasbeen saturated and free drainage has practically ceased . Field determinationof drainage i s usually inferred from soil morphology, slope position, andvegetation .
