The fall and winter months will be extremely busyfor the SMSCS. Extensive planning continues forthe upcoming Sport Med Saturday Conferencetaking place on October 17 in Saskatoon at the Uof S. We have lined up an extremely exciting listof presenters to share their expertise in how toprevent, test, diagnose, and treat various types ofknee injuries. Registration numbers are quicklybuilding, so I encourage anyone who is stillthinking of attending to register soon. There ismore information on this conference within thisedition of the newsletter.

The strategic planning that was initiated in Moose Jaw last springcontinues. This is a very interesting and involved process. However, it isalso very rewarding to see the plan coming together and know that theSMSCS will have a solid direction to follow over the next years.

Congratulations to all the athletes, coaches and managers that attendedthe Canada Summer Games in PEI in August. A huge ‘pat on the back’must go out to the SMSCS staff and consultants for helping prepare theathletes over the last three years. Our province had many greatperformances and personal bests, and I know the SMSCS’s assistance inthe development of these athletes played a role in their achievements. We’ve also heard nothing but rave reviews in regards to the Mission andMedical staff the Council sent to be part of the Games. Louise Ashcroft, one of our members, attended as the medical liaison for TeamSaskatchewan. Dr. Warren Dufour was part of the medical team, and BrieJedlic, one of our staff members, attended as the mental trainingconsultant.

I’d like to thank everyone involved with the Medical Coverage Program, specifically those that assist in the event coverage component of theprogram. This program is vital in providing a safe environment for themany athletes of our province. It was one of the founding programs of theCouncil. Without our members coming forward to help, this programsimply would not exist.

In closing, I invite anyone to contact the SMSCS to discuss any issues, concerns, or initiatives you feel would benefit your development as anathlete, coach, or team.

New Drug Testing RulesRegarding Marijuana

Earlier in the year the CCES sent out a mediarelease indicating that a doping violation forMarijuana or other specified substances is muchmore likely to result in a suspension and publicdisclosure of the athlete’s identity under the new2009 Canadian Anti-Doping Program (CADP).

Under the old CADP, the use of specifiedsubstances (like marijuana) typically resulted in awarning and reprimand with no period of sportineligibility when the athlete could describe how thesubstance entered his or her body and prove thatthe use was non-performance enhancing.

Now, under the new CADP, it is much more likelythat a suspension period will be imposed and anyviolation that results in a period of ineligibility willresult in public disclosure of the athlete’s name in amedia release and on the CCES website.

The reason for this change is that under the 2009CADP, there is a greater burden of proof on theathlete prior to becoming eligible for a reducedsanction. In addition to the previous CADP’srequirements, the athlete must now establish thatthe substance was not intended to mask aperformance-enhancing substance, and providecompelling, corroborating evidence from anotherperson regarding the absence of intent to enhanceperformance. Only if this three-part test is satisfiedwill it be possible to seek a reduction in sanction, from two years of ineligibility down to the lowestpossibility – a reprimand.

For more information on this or any other topicvisist the CCES website at www.cces.ca.

Blood Samples Now Being UsedThe Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) is resuming blood testing, complementing the use of urine analysisin an increasingly robust anti-doping program. Blood collection has been a part of the Canadian Anti-DopingProgram (CADP) since 2004, but is only now being fully implemented domestically. The collection of blood enablesthe detection of blood doping and the use of human growth hormone, and allows monitoring of selected bloodparameters. At first, blood samples will be collected during in-competition doping control, and the national sportorganization will be advised that blood sampling will be conducted at its event. As the blood program progresses, national sport organizations and athletes will be advised that blood collection can be incorporated into testingmissions at any time without prior notification. Blood collection will also begin to be incorporated into the CCESout-of-competition doping control program. For more information visit the CCES website at www.cces.ca

Sleeping More HelpsPerformance - The more you sleep, the more you increase your speed, reflexes, and power in competition, aStanford University study reveals.College tennis players who aimed for10 hours of sleep a night for 6 weekssaw a significant boost in their overallperformance-including a 8%improvement in sprinting. “Treat sleepas a part of your training,” says leadstudy author Cheri Mah, M.S.

The Anger Advantage - This couldmake you scream: Expressing angerincreases muscle force by 25%,reveals a new study in the Journal ofSport & Exercise Psychology.Researchers found that collegestudents who demonstrated anger -by shouting, for example - kickedharder than students who were alsoangry but didn’t vent, says study

Repair Muscle Faster - Recoverfaster from a hard workout by lightlyexercising the same muscles thefollowing day. Use a light weight—about 20 percent of the weight youcan lift one time—and do two sets of25 repetitions. This will deliver moreblood and nutrients into yourmuscles so they repair faster (Men’sHealth magazine).

Drink Up, Get Lean - Drink low-fatmilk. Scientists in Canada found thatpeople who consumed more than600 milligrams of calcium a day—roughly the amount in 2 cups of milk,a cup of broccoli, and a half cup ofcottage cheese—had lower body fatthan those who consumed less than600 milligrams a day.

Crunches for Nothing - Don’t try tolose your gut by working your abs.Researchers at the University ofVirginia found that it takes 250,000crunches to burn 1 pound of fat—that’s 100 crunches a day for 7years.

Kill the Pill- Don’t pop a pill afteryou work out. Researchers at theUniversity of Arkansas for MedicalSciences found that ibuprofen (Advil,Motrin) and acetaminophen (Tylenol)were no more effective than aplacebo in relieving postexercisemuscle soreness. More important, they say the drugs may actuallysuppress muscle growth when takenafter a workout

Eating on the Road - Be carefulwhat you eat. According to theAmerican Dietetic Association, onaverage a veggie burger contains 5times more sodium than a beefburger.

author Tim Woodman, PhD. Youcan use that energy (whether you’reangry or not) by yelling when it’sappropriate - like when you’reslamming a serve over the net.

Ditch the Weight Belt - Don’t trainwith a weight belt. Over time, regulartraining in a weight belt actuallyweakens your abdominal and lower-back muscles. Wear it only whenattempting maximal lifts in suchexercises as squats, deadlifts, andoverhead presses (Men’s HealthMagazine).
