  • “ We are a European transmission system operator and a leading energy logistics service company. We play an active role in shaping the energy market, work on the future prospects of our gas infrastructure and develop sustainable gas transport solutions through innovative projects and long-term engagement.”

Uwe Ringel and Ralph Bahke, Board of Management

Secure energy supplies lay the foundation for a sound economy and high quality of

life. For many years, natural gas and gas from renewable sources have supported

economic and social progress in Germany. A key prerequisite is safe and reliable gas

    transport in line with demand.

As a transmission system operator within the integrated European gas grid, ONTRAS

is responsible for more than 7,000 kilometres of high pressure gas pipelines in the

eastern states of Germany. For more than 10 years, we have ensured the trouble-free

operation and continued development of our gas infrastructure. As a reliable partner,

we serve the interests of transport customers, wholesalers, regional network opera-

tors and producers of gas from renewable sources. With our vision “ONTRAS, going

green”, we tackle global climate policy challenges and pave the way for the gradual

changeover from natural gas to renewable gases, laying the foundation for the long-

term future of our valuable gas infrastructure.

  • Reliable system operation An employer with a future

ONTRAS creates highly efficient, reliable infrastructure ensuring that gas is always available where it is needed in line with demand. We achieve this objective by provid- ing the capacities required and conscientiously main-taining and repairing the transmission system. As one of the founders and system operators of the GASPOOL market area, we organize gas transport together with about 130 downstream system operators. The capacities of our network are marketed in a transparent, flexible and customer-friendly way via the European online platform PRISMA. In line with customers’ requirements, capacities may be booked for several years, months, weeks, days or for only a few hours of one day.

ONTRAS offers attractive jobs. Our comprehensive social and health benefits provide security and assist employees with their personal and professional devel- opment. Employees with high qualifications who have received regular training ensure compliance with the highest safety and quality standards and an efficient logistics system with high-tech support. ONTRAS has played a key role in shaping the technical, logistic, regulatory and legal know-how available throughout the VNG Group. The continuous further development of this intellectual property which is available to all employees is the key to flexible, innovative adaptation to the requirements of the future.

    Providing security

    “Providing security means assuming

    responsibility – for system operation,

    customers and employees. ”

  • Helping shape the ground rules

    Strengthening cooperation

Gas transport within the Single European Market is characterized by national and European interests and regulations. In order to create an effective legal frame- work, it is necessary to contribute industry-specific know-how and experience to the legislative process in a constructive dialogue. ONTRAS is therefore actively involved in national and European committees and industry associations with a view to creating the leeway required for strategic decisions and meaningful invest-ments. In addition, we are intensifying cooperation with system operators in Germany and other countries and other experienced organizations with a view to laying a good foundation for the development of new business areas.

We are consistently expanding our offering connected with gas transport and green future options for gas. The key is a package of product innovations and process improvements. This generates added value for us and our customers. Through the intensification of national and international cooperation, we are strengthening our position within the Single European Market. In coopera-tion with research institutions and other organizations, we are forging ahead with technical development and expanding our horizons for innovations. The main focus is on projects connected with the vision “ONTRAS, going green”. These not only include power-to-gas technologies but also analyses of individual technical components for process improvement.

    Practising commitment

“ Gas transport in Europe calls for intensive cooperation between all the players.”

  • Integrating renewable energies

    Network-related services

ONTRAS is not only the operator of a gas transmission system but also markets the capacities of the system and transports gas. A key element in our corporate vision is the integration of renewable gases. We connect biogas plants to our system. We invest in, construct and support the injection systems required. As of February 2017, 22 biogas plants were connected to the ONTRAS gas transmission system. In addition, two power-to-gas plants which convert wind power into hydrogen for in-jection into the network are connected to our system. One of these two plants is to be modified for the conver-sion of hydrogen from renewable sources into methane for injection into the ONTRAS system in 2017.

We grasp the opportunities offered by competition. In addition to our core business of system operation and capacity marketing, network-related services are becom- ing increasingly important. ONTRAS reacted to this development by establishing its own service company INFRACON Infrastruktur Service GmbH in January 2015. The INFRACON service portfolio ranges from operation and maintenance through engineering services to data management. The company also offers energy consul-tancy and energy management services for companies. Backed by the expertise of ONTRAS developed over many years, INFRACON is the specialist in network- related and individually adapted services.

    Fostering development

“We identify opportunities for the future and exploit

the potential of our gas infrastructure.”

Our engagementONTRAS is engaged in a targeted way in initiatives and associations to actively shape the framework conditions for the gas infrastructure of the future. We are the only German transmission system operator which is a member of the Green Gas Initiative, a combination of seven European infrastructure operators intensively involved in pursuing the joint goal of establishing carbon-neutral energy supplies by 2050.

Contributing to the energy transition with power-to-gas.

Environmentally compatible action, promotion of energy efficiency.

Two power-to-gas plants are connected to the ONTRAS system, a further one is in the planning stage. We see power-to-gas technology as a cornerstone of the energy industry of the future. This is why we are making efforts to forge ahead with power-to-gas beyond the pilot stage and to establish it in the marketplace. Together with partners from industry, we are investigating applications for hydrogen and further potential of our infrastructure for carrying hydrogen from renewable sources. In our work on national and European associations, we support better conditions for power-to-gas applications.

ONTRAS has focused on energy efficiency from the outset and is working systematically to improve its own CO

2 footprint. Since the introduction of an energy

management system in accordance with DN EN ISO 50001, ONTRAS has taken more and more action to improve energy efficiency and energy use and to reduce energy consumption. For example, since 2017, we have solely used power from ecologically sound sources for all the buildings and plants of our company. We are also continually optimizing our system. These and other measures form part of our sustainability program.

    Our vision

    Our projects

Conceiving, shaping and implementing future developments. At ONTRAS, green prospects are now a key element in the corporate philosophy. “ONTRAS, going green” is part of our everyday work and is especially apparent in the many and varied projects and initiatives which we are pursuing to forge ahead with the future options for our gas infrastructure.

Using biogas as a green source of energy.

Massive expansion of CNG use in the mobility sector.

Each year, the 22 biogas plants connected to the ONTRAS gas transmission system feed up to 180 million cubic metres of biomethane into the system, corresponding to about 17 percent of the total biomethane injection volume in Germany. Two pipelines within the ONTRAS system only carry biomethane. Since 2015, a mobile bio-methane compressor developed by ONTRAS in coopera-tion with several partners has ensured high biomethane availability in the network area. Investments in systems to feed gas from distribution systems to transmission systems are providing access to a wider market for the fuel.

The use of natural gas and biomethane in the mobility sector is an especially economical way of effectively reducing CO

2 emissions in the sector. Especially fleet

operators can implement more sustainable mobility concepts in the short term. ONTRAS is increasingly using CNG vehicles in its company fleet. In a number of other foward-looking projects and market partner- ships, we are committed to expanding the infrastructure for CNG mobility. We support the goals of the German Energy Agency (dena) natural gas mobility initiative launched in 2015.
