Whether it’s a nursing center resident enjoying greater mobility, a mother who knows her child is well cared for while she receives medical treatment, family members who feel blessed knowing their loved one is receiving excellent care near the end of life, a father whose sudden stroke is quickly assessed and treated close to home, or a young woman who faces breast cancer with new hope and possibility … all of these stories, and many more, exist because you care.

n special events honor special supporters

Waverley Country Club was the venue on Oct. 23 for the annual Providence Society Dinner, honoring philanthropists and recognizing loyal donors. Safeway Foundation was named the Earle M. Chiles Philanthropist of the Year Award. The Safeway Foundation, through customer and employee support, has given more than $4 million toward breast cancer research at Providence in recent years. Michelle Judson, a breast cancer survivor, was on hand to present the award to Safeway. The Earle M. Chiles Philanthropist of the Year Award recognizes those who have supported Providence Cancer Research as committed visionaries.

n Celebrating 20 years of innovative cancer research and therapies

In 2013, Walter Urba, M.D., Ph.D., and the Robert W. Franz Cancer Research Center in the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute celebrated their 20-year anniversary at Providence. This important milestone marked two decades of cancer research that focuses on cell immunology and discovery of new cancer immunotherapies. Since the center opened in 1993, more than 7,000 clinical trials have been conducted with many more on the way. None of this research and new therapies would have been possible without the generous support of loyal donors.

n Festival of trees helps keep young hearts healthy

Providence Festival of Trees rang in the season to a theme of “Merry and Bright” in 2013, raising funds for Providence programs. In its 31st year, this important event is a holiday tradition for the Portland community. Primary beneficiary this year was Providence Heart and Vascular Institute’s youth cardiac screening program, Play Smart. The program’s goal is to identify and screen young people at risk for heart disease and sudden death and also to provide educational resources to families, schools and athletic programs throughout Oregon and southwest Washington. Generous donors raised their paddles during the special appeal to give $550,000 to the Play Smart program. To date, the program has screened nearly 2,000 youth, identifying more than 20 who needed additional care and treatment.

n My Little Waiting Room opens second location

The second location of My Little Waiting Room opened its doors at Providence Portland Medical Center on April 5, 2013, with a grand opening celebration. My Little Waiting Room provides fun, safe, drop-in child care for children at Providence Portland Medical Center whose families have medical appointments or are visiting patients. This innovative program was the brainchild of community members Melissa Moore and Amy Paterson. A breast cancer survivor who received her treatment at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, Paterson was honored in October with the prestigious Points of Light Award at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. To date, My Little Waiting Room at Providence St. Vincent and Providence Portland medical centers have seen more than 20,000 young visitors combined.
