Indicated for the treatment of GERD. Nursing Implications (what to focus on) Contraindications/warnings/interactions Hypersensitivity Common side effects headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence, hyperglycemia, Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC or herbal medicines (ask patient specifically) none Lab value alterations caused by medicine May cause abnormal liver function tests, including increased AST, ALT, alkaline phosphatase, and bilirubin Be sure to teach the patient the following about this medication Avoid alcohol, asparin, NSAIDS, report black tarry stools, diarrhea, or abdominal pain Nursing Process- Assessment (Pre-administration assessment) Assess for erosive esophogitis, level of pain, and black tarry stools, diarrhea, or abdominal pain.
