• The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was created in 1988.

• The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the leading international body for the assessment of climate change.

• It was set up by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) as an effort by the United Nations to provide the governments of the world with a clear scientific view of what is happening to the world's climate

• The IPCC is a scientific body. It reviews and assesses the most recent scientific, technical and socio-economic information produced worldwide relevant to the understanding of climate change. It does not conduct any research nor does it monitor climate related data or parameters.

• The IPCC is an intergovernmental body. It is open to all member countries of the United Nations (UN) and WMO. Currently 194 countries are members of the IPCC. Governments participate in the review process and the plenary Sessions, where main decisions about the IPCC work programme are taken and reports are accepted, adopted and approved. The IPCC Bureau Members, including the Chair, are also elected during the plenary Sessions.

Most successful treaty

• The Montreal Protocol on Substances That Deplete the Ozone Layer (a protocol to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer) is an international treaty

• Designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production of numerous substances believed to be responsible for ozone depletion.

• The treaty was opened for signature on September 16, 1987, and entered into force on January 1, 1989,

Kyoto Protocol

• The Kyoto Protocol is a protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC or FCCC), aimed at fighting global warming.

• The UNFCCC is an international environmental treaty with the goal of achieving the "stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system."

• The Protocol was initially adopted on 11 December 1997 in Kyoto, Japan and entered into force on 16 February 2005.

• As of July 2010, 191 states have signed and ratified the protocol.
